After salutation, 4 having acknowledged the graces of their Church, 10 he dehorteth them from their Schismatical boasting against one another in their baptizers (telling them that they must boast only in Christ for their Baptism) 17 and in their preachers, who had the wisdom of words: telling them that it is the preaching of the Cross, whereby God saveth the world, and wherein only Christians should boast: 26 seeing God of purpose chose the contemptible, that so himself might have the glory. After salutation, 4 hauing acknowledged the graces of their Churche, 10 he dehorteth them from their Schismatical boasting against one an other in their baptizers (telling them that they must boast onely in Christ for their Baptisme) 17 and in their preachers, who had the wisedom of wordes: telling them that it is the preaching of the Crosse, whereby God saueth the world, and wherein onely Christians should boast: 26 seing God of purpose chose the contemptible, that so him self might haue the glorie.
The 1. part. Of Schismes that were about their baptizers & preachers.
Paul called to be an Apostle of JESUS Christ, by the will of God, and Sosthenes a brother,PAVL called to be an Apostle of IESVS Christ, by the wil of God, and Sosthenes a brother,Paulus vocatus Apostolus Jesu Christi per voluntatem Dei, et Sosthenes frater,
2to the Church of God that is at Corinth, to the sanctified in Christ JESUS, called to be saints, with all that invocant: call upon the name of our Lord JESUS Christ in every place of theirs and ours.to the Church of God that is at Corinth, to the sanctified in Christ IESVS, called to be saincts, with al that inuocate the name of our Lord IESVS Christ in euery place of theirs and ours.ecclesiæ Dei, quæ est Corinthi, sanctificatis in Christo Jesu, vocatis sanctis, cum omnibus qui invocant nomen Domini nostri Jesu Christi, in omni loco ipsorum et nostro.
3Grace to you and peace from God our father and our Lord JESUS Christ.Grace to you and peace from God our father and our Lord IESVS Christ.Gratia vobis, et pax a Deo Patre nostro, et Domino Jesu Christo.
4I give thanks to my God always for you for the grace of God that is given you in Christ JESUS,I giue thankes to my God alwaies for you for the grace of God that is giuen you in Christ IESVS,Gratias ago Deo meo semper pro vobis in gratia Dei, quæ data est vobis in Christo Jesu :
5that in all things you be made rich in him, in all verbo: power of speech, eloquence, and in all knowledge, that in al things you be made riche in him, in al vtterance, and in al knowledge,¶quod in omnibus divites facti estis in illo, in omni verbo, et in omni scientia.
6(as the testimony of Christ is confirmed in you,)( as the testimonie of Christ is confirmed in you,)Sicut testimonium Christi confirmatum est in vobis :
7so that nothing is wanting to you in any grace, expecting the revelation of our Lord JESUS Christ,so that nothing is wanting to you in any grace, expecting the reuelation of our Lord IESVS Christ, ita ut nihil vobis desit in ulla gratia, exspectantibus revelationem Domini nostri Jesu Christi,
8who also will confirm you unto the end without crime, in the day of the coming of our Lord JESUS Christ.who also wil confirme you vnto the end without crime, in the day of the comming of our Lord IESVS Christ.qui et confirmabit vos usque in finem sine crimine, in die adventus Domini nostri Jesu Christi.
9God is faithful: by whom you are called into the society of his son JESUS Christ our Lord.God is faithful: by whom you are called into the societie of his sonne IESVS Christ our Lord.Fidelis Deus : per quem vocati estis in societatem filii ejus Jesu Christi Domini nostri.
10And I beseech you brethren by the name of our Lord JESUS Christ, that you all say one thing, and that there be no schisms among you: but that you be perfect in one sense, and in one knowledge. And I beseeche you brethren by the name of our Lord IESVS Christ, that you al say one thing, and that there be no schismes among you : but that you be perfect in one sense, & in one knowledge.Obsecro autem vos fratres per nomen Domini nostri Jesu Christi : ut idipsum dicatis omnes, et non sint in vobis schismata : sitis autem perfecti in eodem sensu, et in eadem sententia.
11For it is signified unto me (my brethren) of you, by them that are of Chloe, that there be contentions among you.For it is signified vnto me (my brethren) of you, by them that are of Chloe, that there be contentions among you.Significatum est enim mihi de vobis fratres mei ab iis, qui sunt Chloës, quia contentiones sunt inter vos.
12And I mean this, for that every one of you saith, I quidem: indeed, for my part am Paul's, and I Apollo's, but I Cephas', and I Christ's.And I meane this, for that euery one of you saith, I certes am Paules, & I Apollos, but I Cephas, and I Christs.Hoc autem dico, quod unusquisque vestrum dicit : Ego quidem sum Pauli : ego autem Apollo : ego vero Cephæ : ego autem Christi.
13Is Christ divided? Why, was Paul crucified for you? or in the name of Paul were you baptized? Is Christ deuided? Why, was Paul crucified for you? or in the name of Paul were you baptized?Divisus est Christus ? numquid Paulus crucifixus est pro vobis ? aut in nomine Pauli baptizati estis ?
14I give God thanks that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Caius:I giue God thankes that I baptized none of you, but * Crispus and Caius:Gratias ago Deo, quod neminem vestrum baptizavi, nisi Crispum et Caium :
15lest any man say that in my name you were baptized.lest any man say that in my name you were baptized.ne quis dicat quod in nomine meo baptizati estis.
16And I baptized also the house of Stephanas. But I know not if I have baptized any other. And I baptized also the house of Stephanas. But I know not if I haue baptized any other.Baptizavi autem et Stephanæ domum : ceterum nescio si quem alium baptizaverim.
17For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to evangelize: not in wisdom of speech, that the cross of Christ be not made void. For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to euangelize: not in wisedom of speache, that the crosse of Christ be not made void.Non enim misit me Christus baptizare, sed evangelizare : non in sapientia verbi, ut non evacuetur crux Christi.
18For the word of the cross, to them in deed that perish, is foolishness: but to them that are saved, that is, to us, it is the power of God.For the word of the crosse, to them in deede that perish, is folishnes : but to them that are saued, that is, to vs, it is the power of God.Verbum enim crucis pereuntibus quidem stultitia est : iis autem qui salvi fiunt, id est nobis, Dei virtus est.
19For it is written, *I will destroy the wisdom of the wise: and the prudence of the prudent I will reject.*For it is written, *I wil destroy the wisedom of the wise : and the prudence of the prudent I wil reiecte.*Scriptum est enim : Perdam sapientiam sapientium, et prudentiam prudentium reprobabo.
20Where is the wise? where is the Scribe? where is the disputer of this world? Hath not God made the wisdom of this world foolish?Where is the wise? where is the Scribe? where is the disputer of this world? Hath not God made the wisedom of this world foolish?Ubi sapiens ? ubi scriba ? ubi conquisitor hujus sæculi ? Nonne stultam fecit Deus sapientiam hujus mundi ?
21For because in the wisdom of God the world did not by wisdom know God: it pleased God by the foolishness of the preaching to save them that believe. For because in the wisedom of God the world did not by wisedom know God : it pleased God by the folishnes of the preaching to saue them that beleeue.Nam quia in Dei sapientia non cognovit mundus per sapientiam Deum : placuit Deo per stultitiam prædicationis salvos facere credentes.
22For both the Jews ask signs, and the Greeks seek wisdom:For both the Iewes aske signes, and the Greekes seeke wisedom :Quoniam et Judæi signa petunt, et Græci sapientiam quærunt :
23but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews certes a scandalum: a disgraceful event; a stumbling-block, occasion of sin, and to the Gentiles, foolishness:but we preach Christ crucified, to the Iewes certes a scandal, and to the Gentiles, folishnes :nos autem prædicamus Christum crucifixum : Judæis quidem scandalum, gentibus autem stultitiam,
24but to the called Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.but to the called Iewes & Greekes, Christ the power of God and the wisedom of God.ipsis autem vocatis Judæis, atque Græcis Christum Dei virtutem, et Dei sapientiam :
25For that which is the foolish of God, is wiser than men: and that which is the infirmum: the weak thing of God, is stronger than men.For that which is the folish of God, is wiser then men : and that which is the infirme of God, is stronger then men.quia quod stultum est Dei, sapientius est hominibus : et quod infirmum est Dei, fortius est hominibus.
26For see your vocation brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble:For see your vocation brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mightie, not many noble :Videte enim vocationem vestram, fratres, quia non multi sapientes secundum carnem, non multi potentes, non multi nobiles :
27but the foolish things of the world hath God chosen, that he may confound the wise: and the weak things of the world hath God chosen, that he may confound the strong:but the folish things of the world hath God chosen, that he may confound the wise : and the weake things of the world hath God chosen, that he may confound the strong :sed quæ stulta sunt mundi elegit Deus, ut confundat sapientes : et infirma mundi elegit Deus, ut confundat fortia :
28and the base things of the world and the contemptible hath God chosen, and those things which are not, that he might destroy those things which are:and the base things of the world and the contemptible hath God chosen, and those things which are not, that he might destroy those things which are :et ignobilia mundi, et contemptibilia elegit Deus, et ea quæ non sunt, ut ea quæ sunt destrueret :
29that no flesh may glory in his sight.that no flesh may glorie in his sight.ut non glorietur omnis caro in conspectu ejus.
30And of him you are in Christ JESUS, who is made unto us wisdom from God, and justice, and sanctification, and redemption:And of him you are in Christ IESVS, who is made vnto vs wisedom from God, & iustice, & sanctificatiō, and redemption :¶Ex ipso autem vos estis in Christo Jesu, qui factus est nobis sapientia a Deo, et justitia, et sanctificatio, et redemptio :
31that as it is written, *He that doth glory, may glory in our Lord.*that as it is written, *He that doth glorie, may glorie in our Lord.*ut quemadmodum scriptum est : Qui gloriatur, in Domino glorietur.
Annotations
5In all knowledge. Observe that the Apostles never wrote their letters but to such as were converted to Christ's faith before. (Faith cometh by hearing, rather than reading.) for men can not lightly learn the Christian religion by reading Scriptures, but by hearing, and by the presence of their teachers, which may instruct them at large and particularly of every Article, as clearly and briefly by letters they could not do. Neither doth now any man learn his faith first, but by hearing of his parents and Masters. for if we should when we come to years of discretion, be set to pick our faith out of the Scriptures, there would be a mad work and many faiths among us.In al knowledge. 30Who is made. He meaneth not, as our Adversaries captiously take it, that we have no justice, sapience, nor sanctity of our own, other than Christ's imputed to us: (Christ is made our justice, because he is the author of the justice in us.) but the sense is, that he is made the author, giver, and meritorious cause of all these virtues in us. for so the Apostle interpreteth himself plainly in the 6 Chapter following, when he writeth thus, You be washed, you be justified, you be sanctified in the name of our Lord JESUS CHRIST and in the Spirit of our God.Who is made.
