That according as so glorious a ministery requireth, he liveth and preacheth sincerely, 7 the which glory his Adversaries cannot count vain, considering his persecutions, because persecution is to Gods glory, and to our humility and hope, and meritorious of increase of grace in this life, and of most glorious bodies and souls afterward. That according as so glorious a ministerie requireth, he liueth and preacheth sincerely, 7 the which glorie his Aduersaries can not count vaine, considering his persecutions, because persecution is to Gods glorie, and to our humilitie and hope, and meritorious of increase of grace in this life, and of most glorious bodies and soules afterward.

Therefore having this ministration: according as we have obtained mercy, we fail not,THERFORE hauing this ministration: according as we haue obteined mercie, we faile not,Ideo habentes administrationem, juxta quod misericordiam consecuti sumus, non deficimus,

2but we renounce the secret things of dedecoris: dishonesty: lying; shameful disgrace, not walking in craftiness, nor adulterating the word of God, but in manifestation of the truth commending our selves to every conscience of men before God.but we renounce the secrete things of dishonestie, not walking in craftines, nor adulterating the word of God, but in manifestation of the truth commending our selues to euery conscience of men before God.sed abdicamus occulta dedecoris, non ambulantes in astutia, neque adulterantes verbum Dei, sed in manifestatione veritatis commendantes nosmetipsos ad omnem conscientiam hominum coram Deo.

3And if our Gospel be also hid, in them that perish it is hid,And if our Gospel be also hidde, in them that perish it is hidde,Quod si etiam opertum est Evangelium nostrum, in iis, qui pereunt, est opertum :

4in whom the God of this world hath blinded the minds of the infidels, that the illumination of the Gospel of the glory of Christ who is the image of God, might not shine to them.in whom the God of this world hath blinded the mindes of the infidels, that the illumination of the Gospel of the glorie of Christ who is the image of God, might not shine to them.in quibus Deus hujus sæculi excæcavit mentes infidelium, ut non fulgeat illis illuminatio Evangelii gloriæ Christi, qui est imago Dei.

5For we preach not our selves, but JESUS Christ our Lord: and us, your servants by JESUS,For we preache not our selues, but IESVS Christ our Lord: and vs, your seruants by IESVS,Non enim nosmetipsos prædicamus, sed Jesum Christum Dominum nostrum : nos autem servos vestros per Jesum :

6because God that commanded light to shine of darkness, he hath shined in our hearts to the illumination of the knowledge of the glory of God, in the face of Christ JESUS.because God that commaunded light to shine of darkenes, he hath shined in our hartes to the illumination of the knowledge of the glorie of God, in the face of Christ IESVS.quoniam Deus, qui dixit de tenebris lucem splendescere, ipse illuxit in cordibus nostris ad illuminationem scientiæ claritatis Dei, in facie Christi Jesu.

7But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the sublimitas: surpassing greatness, sublimity may be of the power of God, and not of us.But we haue this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellencie may be of the power of God, and not of vs.Habemus autem thesaurum istum in vasis fictilibus : ut sublimitas sit virtutis Dei, et non ex nobis.

8In all things we suffer tribulation, but are not in distress: we aporiamur: desire; are in straits, lack, but are not destitute:In al things we suffer tribulation, but are not in distresse: we a want, but are not destitute:In omnibus tribulationem patimur, sed non angustiamur : aporiamur, sed non destituimur :

9we suffer persecution, but are not forsaken: we are cast down, but we perish not:we suffer persecution, but are not forsaken: we are cast downe, but we perish not:persecutionem patimur, sed non derelinquimur : dejicimur, sed non perimus :

10always bearing about in our body the mortification of JESUS, that the life also of JESUS may be manifested in our bodies.alwaies bearing about in our body the mortification of IESVS, that the life also of IESVS may be manifested in our bodies.semper mortificationem Jesu in corpore nostro circumferentes, ut et vita Jesu manifestetur in corporibus nostris.

11For we that live, are always delivered unto death for JESUS: that the life also of JESUS may be manifested in our mortal flesh. For we that liue, are alwaies deliuered vnto death for IESVS: that the life also of IESVS may be manifested in our mortal flesh.Semper enim nos, qui vivimus, in mortem tradimur propter Jesum : ut et vita Jesu manifestetur in carne nostra mortali.

12Death then worketh in us, but life in you.Death then worketh in vs, but life in you.Ergo mors in nobis operatur, vita autem in vobis.

13And having the same spirit of faith, as it is written, I believed, for the which cause I have spoken, we also believe, for the which cause we speak also:And hauing the same spirit of faith, as it is written, I beleeued, for the which cause I haue spoken, we also beleeue, for the which cause we speake also:Habentes autem eumdem spiritum fidei, sicut scriptum est : Credidi, propter quod locutus sum : et nos credimus, propter quod et loquimur :

14knowing that he which raised up JESUS, will raise up us also with JESUS, and set us with you.knowing that he which raised vp IESVS, wil raise vp vs also with IESVS, and set vs with you. ⊢scientes quoniam qui suscitavit Jesum, et nos cum Jesu suscitabit, et constituet vobiscum.

15For all things are for you: that the grace abounding by many in giving of thanks, may abound unto the glory of God.For al things are for you: that the grace abounding by many in giuing of thankes, may abound vnto the glorie of God.Omnia enim propter vos : ut gratia abundans, per multos in gratiarum actione, abundet in gloriam Dei.

16For which cause we fail not: but although that our man which is without, corrumpatur: morally corrupt; decayeth, wasteth away, yet that which is within, is renewed from day to day.For which cause we faile not: but although that our man which is without, b corrupte: yet that which is within, is renewed from day to day.Propter quod non deficimus : sed licet is, qui foris est, noster homo corrumpatur, tamen is, qui intus est, renovatur de die in diem.

17For that our tribulation which presently is momentaneum: lasting but a moment, momentary and light, worketh above measure exceedingly an eternal weight of glory in us,For that our tribulation which presently is momentanie & light, c worketh aboue measure exceedingly an eternal weight of glorie in vs,Id enim, quod in præsenti est momentaneum et leve tribulationis nostræ, supra modum in sublimitate æternum gloriæ pondus operatur in nobis,

18we not considering the things that are seen, but that are not seen. For the things that be seen, are temporal: but those that be not seen, are eternal.we not considering the things that are seen, but that are not seen. For the things that be seen, are temporal: but those that be not seen, are eternal.non contemplantibus nobis quæ videntur, sed quæ non videntur. Quæ enim videntur, temporalia sunt : quæ autem non videntur, æterna sunt.

2Adulterating. He giveth often warning of false teachers, whose special and proper study is to falsify and adulterate by deceitful constructions, interpretations, and applications, the word of God: having no other end but to make their advantage of the Scriptures, and to gain glory and estimation among the sinful and simple, by new devised expositions. Wherein the Protestants do excel the ancient Heretics, none ever more impurely handling the word of God than they do. Origen calleth such Scripturarum fures & adulteros, thieves and adulterers of the Scriptures. S. Cyprian (de unit. Ec. nu. 7.) calleth them, corrupters of the Gospel, false interpreters, artificers and craftsmasters in corrupting the truth. On the other side, for special reverence and sincerity of dealing in those matters, the fathers and all Catholic preachers or Expositors were of old called according to S. Pauls words to Timothy, Rectè tractantes verbum Dei, right handlers of the word of God.Adulterating. 17Worketh. The temporal and short tribulations which we patiently and willingly suffer for Christ, do win us everlasting joy and glory. And it is here to be noted against the Heretics, that tribulations do work or cause the said salvation, which they deny to be given for such things, but for or by faith only. S. Augustine maketh such tribulations for Christ so much the meritorious cause of everlasting life and rest, that he saith it is salable and bought thereby. And it is written, Sap. 10, God rendreth or repaieth to just men the hire of their labours.Worketh.
