He proceedeth to exhort them to purity, and to receive him into their charity. 3 Which lest they should think he speaketh to accuse them, he commendeth them highly, both for their behaviour toward Titus, and for their penance which they had done upon his other epistle. He proceedeth to exhorte them to puritie, and to receiue him into their charitie. 3 Which lest they should thinke he speaketh to accuse them, he commendeth them highly, both for their behauiour toward Titus, and for their penance which they had done vpon his other epistle.

Having therefore these promises, my dearest, let us cleanse our selves from all inquinamentum: defilement, pollution of the flesh and spirit, perfecting sanctification in the fear of God.HAVING therfore these promisses, my dearest, let vs cleanse our selues from al inquination of the flesh and spirit, perfiting sanctification in the feare of God.Has ergo habentes promissiones, carissimi, mundemus nos ab omni inquinamento carnis et spiritus, perficientes sanctificationem in timore Dei.

2Receive us. We have hurt no man, we have corrupted no man, we have circumvenimus: bypassed, evaded; overreached, defrauded no man.Receiue vs. We haue hurt no man, we haue corrupted no man, we haue circumuented no man.Capite nos. Neminem læsimus, neminem corrupimus, neminem circumvenimus.

3I speak not to your condemnation. for I said before that you are in our hearts to die together and to live together.I speake not to your condemnation. for I said before that you are in our hartes to die together and to liue together.

4Much is my confidence with you, much is my glorying for you: I am replenished with consolation: I do exceedingly abound in joy in all our tribulation.Much is my confidence with you, much is my glorying for you: I am replenished with consolation: I do exceedingly abound in ioy in al our tribulation.Multa mihi fiducia est apud vos, multa mihi gloriatio pro vobis : repletus sum consolatione ; superabundo gaudio in omni tribulatione nostra.

5For also when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we suffered all tribulation: without, combats: within, fears. For also when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we suffered al tribulation: without, combats: within, feares.

6But God that comforteth the humble, did comfort us, in the coming of Titus. But God that comforteth the humble, did comforte vs, in the comming of Titus.

7And not only in his coming, but also in the consolation, wherewith he was comforted among you, reporting to us your desire, your weeping, your emulation for me, so that I rejoiced the more. And not only in his comming, but also in the consolation, wherwith he was comforted among you, reporting to vs your desire, your weeping, your emulation for me, so that I reioyced the more.

8For although I made you sorry in an epistle, it repenteth me not: albeit it repented me, seeing that the same epistle (although but for a time) did make you sorry. For although I made you sorie in an epistle, it repenteth me not: albeit it repented me, seing that the same epistle (although but for a time) did make you sorie.

9Now I am glad: not because you were made sorry, but because you were made sorry to penance. For you were made sorry according to God, that in nothing you should suffer detriment by us.Now I am glad: not because you were made sorie, but because you were made sorie to penance. For you were made sorie according to God, that in nothing you should suffer detriment by vs.nunc gaudeo : non quia contristati estis, sed quia contristati estis ad pœnitentiam.

10For the sorrow that is according to God, worketh penance unto salvation that is stable: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. For the sorow that is according to God, worketh penance vnto saluation that is stable: but the sorow of the world worketh death.

11For behold this very thing, that you were made sorry according to God, how great sollicitudinem: caution; earnest solicitude, anxious concern it worketh in you: yea defensionem: military defense; clearing or excusing of yourselves, yea indignation, yea fear, yea desire, yea æmulationem: ambitious rivalry; zeal, yea vindictam: personal vengeance; vindication, just requital. in all things you have showed your selves to be undefiled in the matter. For behold this very thing, that you were made sorie according to God, how great carefulnes it worketh in you: yea defense, yea indignation, yea feare, yea desire, yea emulation, yea reuenge. in al things you haue shewed your selues to be vndefiled in the matter.

12Therefore although I wrote to you, not for him that did the injury, nor for him that suffered: but to manifest our carefulness that we have for you before God,Therfore although I wrote to you, not for him that did the iniurie, nor for him that suffered: but to manifest our carefulnes that we haue for you before God,Igitur, etsi scripsi vobis, non propter eum qui fecit injuriam, nec propter eum qui passus est : sed ad manifestandam sollicitudinem nostram, quam habemus pro vobis

13therefore we are comforted. But in our consolation, we did the more abundantly rejoice upon the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed of all you.therfore we are comforted. But in our consolation, we did the more abundantly reioyce vpon the ioy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed of al you.coram Deo : ideo consolati sumus.

14And if to him I gloried any thing of you, I am not confounded: but as we spake all things to you in truth, so also our glorying that was to Titus, is made a truth,And if to him I gloried any thing of you, I am not confounded: but as we spake al things to you in truth, so also our glorying that was to Titus, is made a truth,et si quid apud illum de vobis gloriatus sum, non sum confusus : sed sicut omnia vobis in veritate locuti sumus, ita et gloriatio nostra, quæ fuit ad Titum, veritas facta est,

15and his bowels are more abundantly toward you: remembering the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling you received him.and his bowels are more abundantly toward you: remembring the obedience of you al, how with feare and trembling you receiued him.et viscera ejus abundantius in vobis sunt, reminiscentis omnium vestrum obedientiam : quomodo cum timore et tremore excepistis illum.

16I rejoice that in all things I have confidence in you.I reioyce that in al things I haue confidence in you.Gaudeo quod in omnibus confido in vobis.

9Sorry to penance. The sorrow which a man taketh for worldly losses or any temporal adversity, is not here commended, but that which is and ought to be in all men for their sins past, which is called here, Sorrow towards God and for penance, otherwise called Contrition, and is a thing exceedingly requisite and much praised, the fruits whereof are these that the Apostle reckoneth, working salvation. Which doctrine is far distant from Luther's, and Calvin's, and such wicked Libertines, that teach contrition to be altogether a means to make sinners either hypocrites, or to put them in despair.Sorie to penance.
