And behold a man of God came out of Juda, in the word of our Lord into Bethel, Jeroboam standing upon the altar, and thus jaciente: offering incense.AND behold a man of God came out of Iuda, in the word of our Lord into Bethel, Ieroboam standing vpon the altar, and censing.✦Et ecce vir Dei venit de Juda in sermone Domini in Bethel, Jeroboam stante super altare, et thus jaciente.
And he cried out against the altar in the word of our Lord, and said: Altar, altar, thus saith our Lord: Behold a child shall be born to the house of David, named Josias, and he shall immolabit: to sacrifice, slay as victims upon thee priests of the excelsorum: high places, idolatrous hill shrines, which now do burn frankincense on thee, and he shall burn men's bones upon thee. And he cried out against the altar in the word of our Lord, and sayd: Altar, altar, thus saith our Lord: Behold a child shal be borne to the house of Dauid, named Iosias, and he shal immolate vpon thee priestes of the excelses, which now doe burne frankencense on thee, and he shal burne mens bones vpon thee.✦Et exclamavit contra altare in sermone Domini, et ait : Altare, altare, hæc dicit Dominus : Ecce filius nascetur domui David, Josias nomine, et immolabit super te sacerdotes excelsorum, qui nunc in te thura succendunt : et ossa hominum super te incendet.
And he gave a sign in that day, saying: This shall be the sign, that our Lord hath spoken: Behold the altar shall be cloven, and the ashes shall be poured out in it.And he gaue a signe in that day, saying: This shal be the signe, that our Lord hath spoken: Behold the altar shal be clouen, and the ashes shal be powred out in it.✦Deditque in illa die signum, dicens : Hoc erit signum quod locutus est Dominus : ecce altare scindetur, et effundetur cinis qui in eo est.
And when the king had heard the word of the man of God, which he cried out against the altar in Bethel, he stretched forth his hand from the altar, saying: Take him. And his hand withered, which he stretched forth against him: neither was he able to draw it back unto him.And when the king had heard the word of the man of God, which he cried out against the altar in Bethel, he stretched forth his hand from the altar, saying: Take him. And his hand withered, which he stretched forth agaynst him: neither was he able to draw it backe vnto him.✦Cumque audisset rex sermonem hominis Dei quem inclamaverat contra altare in Bethel, extendit manum suam de altari, dicens : Apprehendite eum. Et exaruit manus ejus quam extenderat contra eum, nec valuit retrahere eam ad se.
The altar also was cloven, and the ashes were poured out of the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had told before in the word of our Lord. The altar also was clouen, and the ashes were powred out of the altar, according to the signe which the man of God had told before in the word of our Lord.Altare quoque scissum est, et effusus est cinis de altari, juxta signum quod prædixerat vir Dei in sermone Domini.
And the king said to the man of God: Beseech the face of our Lord thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me. And the man of God besought the face of our Lord, and the king's hand was restored to him, and it became as it was before. And the king said to the man of God: Beseech the face of our Lord thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me. And the man of God besought the face of our Lord, and the kinges hand was restored to him, and it became as it was before.✦Et ait rex ad virum Dei : Deprecare faciem Domini Dei tui, et ora pro me, ut restituatur manus mea mihi. Oravitque vir Dei faciem Domini, et reversa est manus regis ad eum, et facta est sicut prius fuerat.
And the king spake to the man of God: Come home with me, that thou mayst dine, and I will give the gifts. And the king spake to the man of God: Come home with me, that thou mayst dyne, and I wil geue the giftes.Locutus est autem rex ad virum Dei : Veni mecum domum ut prandeas, et dabo tibi munera.
And the man of God answered the king: If thou wouldest give me the half part of thy house, I will not come with thee, nor eat bread, nor drink water in this place:And the man of God answered the king: If thou wouldest geue me the halfe part of thy house, I wil not come with thee, nor eate bread, nor drinke water in this place:Responditque vir Dei ad regem : Si dederis mihi mediam partem domus tuæ, non veniam tecum, nec comedam panem, neque bibam aquam in loco isto :
for so was it enjoined in the word of our Lord commanding: Thou shalt not eat bread nor drink water, nor return by the way that thou camest.for so was it enioyned in the word of our Lord commanding: Thou shalt not eate bread nor drinke water, nor returne by the way that thou camest.✦sic enim mandatum est mihi in sermone Domini præcipientis : Non comedes panem, neque bibes aquam, nec reverteris per viam qua venisti.
He departed therefore by another way, and returned not by the way, that he came into Bethel. He departed therfore by an other way, and returned not by the way, that he came into Bethel.Abiit ergo per aliam viam, et non est reversus per iter quo venerat in Bethel.
And a certain prophet being old dwelt in Bethel, to whom his sons came and told him all the works, that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: and the words which he had spoken to the king, they told their father. And a certaine prophete being old dwelt in Bethel, to whom his sonnes came and told him al the workes, that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: and the wordes which he had spoken to the king, they told their father.✦Prophetes autem quidam senex habitabat in Bethel : ad quem venerunt filii sui, et narraverunt ei omnia opera quæ fecerat vir Dei illa die in Bethel : et verba quæ locutus fuerat ad regem, narraverunt patri suo.
And their father said to them: What way went he? His sons shewed him the way, by which the man of God was gone, which came out of Juda. And their father sayd to them: What way went he? His sonnes shewed him the way, by which the man of God was gone, which came out of Iuda.Et dixit eis pater eorum : Per quam viam abiit ? Ostenderunt ei filii sui viam per quam abierat vir Dei, qui venerat de Juda.
And he said to his sons: Saddle me an ass. Who when they had saddled it, he got up,And he said to his sonnes: Sadle me an asse. Who when they had sadled it, he got vp,Et ait filiis suis : Sternite mihi asinum. Qui cum stravissent, ascendit,
and went after the man of God, and found him sitting under a terebinthum: a turpentine tree: and he said to him: Art thou the man of God that camest out of Juda? He answered: I am he.and went after the man of God, and found him sitting vnder a terebinth: and he said to him: Art thou the man of God that camest out of Iuda? He answered: I am he.et abiit post virum Dei, et invenit eum sedentem subtus terebinthum : et ait illi : Tune es vir Dei qui venisti de Juda ? Respondit ille : Ego sum.
And he said to him: Come home with me, that thou mayst eat bread. And he sayd to him: Come home with me, that thou mayst eate bread.Dixitque ad eum : Veni mecum domum, ut comedas panem.
Who said: I can not return, nor come with thee, neither will I eat bread, nor drink water in this place:Who sayd: I can not returue, nor come with thee, neither wil I eate bread, nor drinke water in this place:Qui ait : Non possum reverti, neque venire tecum : nec comedam panem, neque bibam aquam in loco isto,
because our Lord spake to me in the word of our Lord, saying: Thou shalt not eat bread, and thou shalt not drink water there, nor return by the way thou wentest.because our Lord spake to me in the word of our Lord, saying: Thou shalt not eate bread, and thou shalt not drinke water there, nor returne by the way thou wentest.quia locutus est Dominus ad me in sermone Domini, dicens : Non comedes panem, et non bibes aquam ibi, nec reverteris per viam qua ieris.
Who said to him: I also am a prophet like to thee: and an Angel hath spoken to me in the word of our Lord, saying: Bring him back with thee into thy house, that he may eat bread, and drink water. He deceived him,Who sayd to him: I also am a prophet like to thee: and an Angel hath spoken to me in the word of our Lord, saying: Bring him backe with thee into thy house, that he may eate bread, and drinke water. He deceiued him,✦Qui ait illi : Et ego propheta sum similis tui : et angelus locutus est mihi in sermone Domini, dicens : Reduc eum tecum in domum tuam, ut comedat panem, et bibat aquam. Fefellit eum,
and brought him back with him: he did eat therefore bread in his house, and drunk water.and brought him backe with him: he did eate therfore bread in his house, and drunke water.✦et reduxit secum : comedit ergo panem in domo ejus, et bibit aquam.
And when they sat at the table, the word of our Lord came to the prophet, that brought him back. And when they sate at the table, the word of our Lord came to the prophete, that brought him backe.Cumque sederent ad mensam, factus est sermo Domini ad prophetam qui reduxerat eum.
And he cried out to the man of God, which came out of Juda, saying: Thus saith our Lord: Because thou hast not been obedient to the mouth of our Lord, and hast not kept the commandment, which our Lord thy God commanded thee,And he cried out to the man of God, which came out of Iuda, saying: Thus sayth our Lord: Because thou hast not beene obedient to the mouth of our Lord, and hast not kept the commandment, which our Lord thy God commanded thee,Et exclamavit ad virum Dei qui venerat de Juda, dicens : Hæc dicit Dominus : Quia non obediens fuisti ori Domini, et non custodisti mandatum quod præcepit tibi Dominus Deus tuus,
and hast returned, and eaten bread, and drunk water in the place wherein he commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat bread, nor drink water, thy dead body shall not be brought into the sepulchre of thy fathers.and hast returned, and eaten bread, & drunke water in the place wherin he commanded thee that thou shouldest not eate bread, nor drinke water, thy dead bodie shal not be brought into the sepulchre of thy fathers.et reversus es, et comedisti panem, et bibisti aquam in loco in quo præcepit tibi ne comederes panem neque biberes aquam, non inferetur cadaver tuum in sepulchrum patrum tuorum.
And when he had eaten and drunk, he saddled his ass for the prophet, whom he brought back. And when he had eaten & drunke, he sadled his asse for the prophet, whom he brought backe.Cumque comedisset et bibisset, stravit asinum suum prophetæ quem reduxerat.
Who when he was gone, a lion found him in the way, and killed him, and his body was cast forth in the way: and the ass stood by him, and the lion stood by the dead body.Who when he was gone, a lion found him in the way, and killed him, and his bodie was cast forth in the way: and the asse stood by him, and the lion stood by the dead bodie.✦Qui cum abiisset, invenit eum leo in via, et occidit, et erat cadaver ejus projectum in itinere : asinus autem stabat juxta illum, et leo stabat juxta cadaver.
And behold, men passing by saw the dead body cast in the way, and the lion standing beside the body. And they came and divulged it in the city, wherein that old prophet dwelt. And behold, men passing by saw the dead bodie cast in the way, and the lion standing beside the bodie. And they came and diuulged it in the citie, wherein that old prophet dwelt.Et ecce viri transeuntes viderunt cadaver projectum in via, et leonem stantem juxta cadaver. Et venerunt, et divulgaverunt in civitate in qua prophetes ille senex habitabat.
Which when that prophet heard, which had brought him back out of the way, he said: It is the man of God, that was disobedient to the mouth of our Lord, and our Lord hath delivered him to the lion, and he hath torn him, and killed him according to the word of our Lord, that he spake to him.Which when that prophet heard, which had brought him backe out of the way, he sayd: It is the man of God, that was disobedient to the mouth of our Lord, and our Lord hath deliuered him to the lion, & he hath torne him, and killed him according to the word of our Lord, that he spake to him.Quod cum audisset propheta ille qui reduxerat eum de via, ait : Vir Dei est, qui inobediens fuit ori Domini, et tradidit eum Dominus leoni, et confregit eum, et occidit juxta verbum Domini quod locutus est ei.
And he said to his sons: Saddle me an ass. Who when they had saddled,And he sayd to his sonnes: Sadle me an asse. Who when they had sadled,Dixitque ad filios suos : Sternite mihi asinum. Qui cum stravissent,
and he was gone, he found his dead body cast forth in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the cadaver: a corpse, dead body: the lion did not eat of the dead body, nor hurt the ass.and he was gone, he found his dead bodie cast forth in the way, and the asse and the lion standing by the corse: the lion did not eate of the dead bodie, nor hurt the asse.et ille abiisset, invenit cadaver ejus projectum in via, et asinum et leonem stantes juxta cadaver : non comedit leo de cadavere, nec læsit asinum.
The prophet therefore took the corse of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and returning brought it into the city of the old prophet, that they might mourn for him.The prophet therfore tooke the corse of the man of God, and layd it vpon the asse, and returning brought it into the citie of the old prophete, that they might mourne for him.✦Tulit ergo prophetes cadaver viri Dei, et posuit illud super asinum, et reversus intulit in civitatem prophetæ senis ut plangeret eum.
And he laid his corse in his own sepulchre: and they mourned for him: Alas, alas my brother. And he layd his corse in his owne sepulchre: and they mourned for him: Alas, alas my brother.Et posuit cadaver ejus in sepulchro suo, et planxerunt eum : Heu, heu mi frater !
And when they had mourned for him, he said to his sons: When I shall be dead, bury me in the sepulchre, wherein the man of God is buried: beside his bones lay my bones. And when they had mourned for him, he sayd to his sonnes: When I shal be dead, burie me in the sepulchre, wherein the man of God is buried: beside his bones lay my bones.✦Cumque planxissent eum, dixit ad filios suos : Cum mortuus fuero, sepelite me in sepulchro in quo vir Dei sepultus est : juxta ossa ejus ponite ossa mea.
For assuredly the word shall come to pass, which he hath foretold in the word of our Lord against the altar that is in Bethel: and against all the temples of the excelses, that are in the cities of Samaria. For assuredly the word shal come to passe, which he hath foretold in the word of our Lord agaynst the altar that is in Bethel: and agaynst al the temples of the excelses, that are in the cities of Samaria.Profecto enim veniet sermo quem prædixit in sermone Domini contra altare quod est in Bethel, et contra omnia fana excelsorum quæ sunt in urbibus Samariæ.
After these words Jeroboam returned not from his wicked way: but on the contrary part he made of the most novissimis: the lowest, basest, meanest sort of the people priests of the excelses: Whosoever would, he filled his hand, and he was made a priest of the excelses. After these wordes Ieroboam returned not from his wicked way: but on the contrarie part he made of the most abiect of the people priestes of the excelses: Whosoeuer would, he filled his hand, and he was made a priest of the excelses.✦Post verba hæc non est reversus Jeroboam de via sua pessima, sed e contrario fecit de novissimis populi sacerdotes excelsorum : quicumque volebat, implebat manum suam, et fiebat sacerdos excelsorum.
And for this cause did the house of Jeroboam sin, and was overthrown, and destroyed from the face of the earth. And for this cause did the house of Ieroboam sinne, and was ouerthrowen, and destroyed from the face of the earth.✦Et propter hanc causam peccavit domus Jeroboam, et eversa est, et deleta de superficie terræ.
