The state of Jerusalem is prefigured by a woman mourning, 25. and afterwards rejoicing. The state of Ierusalem is prefigured by a woman mourning, 25. and afterwardes reioycing.

And it came to pass, when my son was entered into his inner chamber, he fell down, and died:AND it came to passe, when my sonne was entred into his inner chamber, he fel downe, and dyed:Et factum est, cum introisset filius meus in thalamo suo, cecidit, et mortuus est :

and we all overthrew the lights, and all my citizens rose up to comfort me, and I was quiet until the other day at night.and we al ouerthrewe the lights, and al my citizens rose vp to comfort me, and I was quiet vntil the other day at night.et evertimus omnes lumina, et surrexerunt omnes cives mei ad consolandum me, et quievi usque in alium diem usque nocte.

And it came to pass, when all were quiet to comfort me, that I might be quiet: and I arose in the night, and fled: and came as thou seest into this field. And it came to passe, when al were quiet to comfort me, that I might be quiet: and I arose in the night, and fled: and came as thou seest into this field.Et factum est, cum omnes quievissent ut me consolarentur ut quiescerem : et surrexi nocte, et fugi : et veni sicut vides in hoc campo :

And I mean now not to return into the city, but to stay here: and neither to eat, nor drink, but without intermission to mourn, and to fast until I die.And I meane nowe not to returne into the citie, but to stay here: and neither to eate, nor drinke, but without intermission to mourne, and to fast vntil I dye.et cogito jam non reverti in civitatem, sed hic consistere : et neque manducare, neque bibere, sed sine intermissione lugere, et jejunare usque dum moriar.

And I left the talk wherein I was, and with anger answered her, and said:And I left the talke wherin I was, and with anger answered her, & sayd:Et dereliqui sermones in quibus eram, et respondi cum iracundia ad eam, et dixi,

Thou fool above all women, seest thou not our mourning, and what things chance to us?Thou foole aboue al wemen, seest thou not our mourning, & what thinges chance to vs?Stulta super omnes mulieres, non vides luctum nostrum, et quæ nobis contingunt ?

Because Sion our mother is sorrowful with all sorrow, and humbled, and mourneth most bitterly.Because Sion our mother is sorrowful with al sorrowe, and humbled, and mourneth most bitterly.Quoniam Sion mater nostra omni tristitia contristata et humilitate humiliata est, et luget validissime.

And now whereas we all mourn, and are sad: whereas we are sorrowful, and art thou sorrowful for one son?And now wheras we al mourne, and are sadde: wheras we ate sorrowful, and art thou sorrowful for one sonne?Et nunc quoniam omnes lugemus, et tristes sumus : quoniam omnes contristati sumus, tu autem contristaris in uno filio ?

For ask the earth, and it will tell thee: that it is she, that ought to lament the fall of so many things that spring upon it.For aske the earth, and it wil tel thee: that it is she, that ought to lament the fal of so manie thinges that spring vpon it.Interroga enim terram, et dicet tibi : quoniam hæc est, quæ debeat lugere casum tantorum super eam germinantium.

And of her were all born from the beginning, and others shall come: and behold, almost all walk into perdition, and the multitude of them cometh to destruction. And of her were al borne from the beginning, and others shal come: and behold, almost al walke into perdition, and the multitude of them cometh to destruction.Et ex ipsa ab initio omnes nati et alii venient : et ecce, pene omnes in perditionem ambulant, et exterminium fit multitudo eorum.

And who then ought to mourn more, but she that hath lost so great a multitude, rather than thou which art sorry for one?And who then ought to mourne more, but she that hath lost so great a multitude, rather then thou which art sorie for one?Et quis ergo debet lugere magis, nisi hæc quæ tam magnam multitudinem perdidit, quàm tu quæ pro uno doles ? Si autem dicis mihi,

And if thou say unto me, that my mourning is not like the earth's: because I have lost the fruit of my womb, which I bare with sorrows, and brought forth with pains:And if thou say vnto me, that my mourning is not lyke the earthes: because I haue lost the fruite of my wombe, which I bare with sorrowes, and brought forth with paynes:Quoniam non est planctus meus similis terræ : quoniam fructum ventris mei perdidi, quem cum mœroribus peperi, et cum doloribus genui :

but the earth according to the manner of the earth, and the present multitude in it hath departed as it came: and I say to thee, but the earth according to the maner of the earth, and the present multitude in it hath departed as it came: and I saye to thee, terra autem secundum viam terræ, abiitque in ea multitudo præsens, quo modo evenit : et ego tibi dico,

as thou hast brought forth with pain, so the earth also giveth her fruit for man from the beginning to him that made her.as thou hast brought forth with payne, so the earth also geueth her fruite for man from the beginning to him that made her.sicut tu cum labore peperisti, sic et terra dat fructum suum homini ab initio ei qui fecit eam.

Now therefore keep in with thy sorrow, and bear stoutly the chances that have befallen thee. Now therfore kepe in with thy sorrowe, and beare stoutly the chances that haue befallen thee.Nunc ergo retine apud temetipsam dolorem tuum, et fortiter fer qui tibi contigerunt casus.

For if thou justify the end of God, thou shalt in time both receive his counsel, and also in such things thou shalt be praised.For if thou iustifie the end of God, thou shalt in time both receiue his counsel, and also in such thinges thou shalt be praysed.Si enim justificaveris terminum Dei, et consilium suum recipies in tempore, et in talibus collaudaberis ;

Go in therefore into the city to thy husband. And she said to me:Goe in therfore into the citie to thy husband. And she sayd to me:ingredere ergo in civitatem ad virum tuum. Et dixit ad me,

I will not do it, neither will I enter into the city, but here will I die.I wil not doe it, neither wil I enter into the citie, but here wil I dye.Non faciam, neque ingrediar civitatem, sed hic moriar.

And I added yet to speak to her, and said:And I added yet to speake to her, & sayd:Et apposui adhuc loqui ad eam, et dixi,

Do not this word, but consent to him that counseleth thee. For how many are the chances of Sion? Take comfort for the sorrow of Jerusalem.Doe not this word, but consent to him that counseleth thee. For how manie are the chances of Sion? Take comfort for the sorrowe of Ierusalem.Noli facere hunc sermonem, sed consenti persuadenti. Quot enim casus Sion ? Consolare propter dolorem Jerusalem.

For thou seest that our sanctification is made desert, and our altar is thrown down, and our temple is destroyed,For thou seest that our sanctification is made desert, and our altar is throwen downe, and our temple is destroyed,Vides enim quoniam sanctificatio nostra deserta effecta est, et altare nostrum demolitum est, et templum nostrum destructum est,

and our psalter is humbled, and hymn is silent, and our exultation is dissolved, and the light of our candlestick is extinguished, and the ark of our testament is taken for spoil, and our holy things are contaminated, and the name that is invocated upon us, is almost profaned: and our children have suffered contumeliam: insulting reproach and abuse, and our Priests are burnt, and our Levites are gone into captivity, and our virgins are deflowered, and our wives have suffered rape, and our just men are violently taken, and our little ones are lost, and our young men are in bondage, and our valiants are made invalidi: sexually incapable; without strength, feeble:and our psalter is humbled, and hymne is silent, and our exultation is dissolued, and the light of our candlesticke is extinguished, and the arke of our testament is taken for spoyle, & our holie thinges are contaminated, and the name that is inuocated vpon vs, is almost prophaned: and our children haue suffred contumelie, and our Priestes are burnt, & our Leuites are gone into captiuitie, & our virgins are defloured, and our wiues haue suffered rape, and our iust men are violently taken, and our litle ones are lost, and our yong men are in bondage, and our valiants are made impotent:et psalterium nostrum humiliatum est, et hymnus conticuit, et exultatio nostra dissoluta est, et lumen candelabri nostri extinctum est, et arca testamenti nostri direpta est, et sancta nostra contaminata sunt, et nomen quod invocatum est super nos, pene prophanatum est : et liberi nostri contumeliam passi sunt, et sacerdotes nostri succensi sunt, et Levitæ nostri in captivitatem abierunt, et virgines nostræ coinquinatæ sunt, et mulieres nostræ vim passæ sunt, et justi nostri rapti sunt, et parvuli nostri perditi sunt, et juvenes nostri servierunt, et fortes nostri invalidi facti sunt :

and that which is greatest of all, the seal of Sion, because she is unsealed of her glory: For she is also delivered into the hands of them that hate us.and that which is greatest of al, the seale of Sion, because she is vnsealed of her glorie: For she is also deliuered into the handes of them that hate vs.et quod omnium majus, signaculum Sion, quoniam resignata est de gloria sua. Nam et tradita est in manibus eorum qui nos oderunt.

Thou therefore shake off thy great heaviness, and lay away from thee the multitude of sorrows, that the Strong may be repropitietur: favourable, well-timed; merciful, well-disposed to pardon to thee again, and the Highest will give thee rest, rest from thy labours.Thou therfore shake of thy great heauines, and lay away from thee the multitude of sorrowes, that the Strong may be propicious to thee agayne, and the Highest wil geue thee rest, rest from thy labours.Tu ergo excute tuam tristitiam multam, et depone abs te multitudinem dolorum, ut tibi repropitietur Fortis, et requiem faciet tibi Altissimus requietionem laborum.

And it came to pass, when I spake to her, her face did shine suddenly, and her shape, and her visage was made coruscus: glittering, flashing bright, so that I was afraid exceedingly at her, and thought what this thing should be.And it came to passe, when I spake to her, her face did shine suddenly, and her shape, and her visage was made glistering, so that I was afrayde excedingly at her, & thought what this thing should be.Et factum est, cum loquebar ad eam, facies ejus fulgebat subito et species, coruscus fiebat visus ejus, ut essem pavens valde ad eam, et cogitarem quid esset hoc.

And Behold, suddenly she put forth a great sound of a voice full of fear, that the earth was moved at the woman's sound. And I saw:And Behold, suddenly she put forth a great sound of a voyce ful of feare, that the earth was moued at the womans sound. And I saw:Et ecce, subito emisit sonitum vocis magnum timore plenum, ut commoveretur terra a mulieris sono. Et vidi :

and behold, the woman did no more appear unto me, but a city was built, and a place was shewed of great foundations: and I was afraid, and crying with a loud voice I said:and behold, the woman did no more appeare vnto me, but a citie was built, & a place was shewed of great fundations: and I was afrayd, & crying with a loude voyce I sayd:et ecce, amplius mulier non comparebat mihi, sed civitas ædificabatur, et locus demonstrabatur de fundamentis magnis : et timui, et clamavi voce magna, et dixi,

Where is Uriel the Angel, that from the beginning came to me? for he made me come in multitude in excessu: a rapture, an ecstasy of mind of this mind, and my end is made into corruption, and my prayer into reproach.Where is Vriel the Angel, that from the beginning came to me? for he made me come in multitude in excesse of this minde, and my end is made into corruption, & my prayer into reproch.Ubi est Uriel angelus, qui a principio venit ad me ? quoniam ipse me fecit venire in multitudine in excessu mentis hujus, et factus est finis meus in corruptionem, et oratio mea in improperium.

And when I was speaking these things, behold he came to me, and saw me.And when I was speaking these thinges, behold he came to me, and sawe me.Et cum essem loquens ego hæc, ecce venit ad me, et vidit me.

And behold I was laid as dead, and my understanding was alienated, and he held my right hand, and strengthened me, and set me upon my feet, and said to me:And behold I was layd as dead, & my vnderstanding was alienated, and he held my right hand, and strengthned me, & set me vpon my feete, & sayd to me:Et ecce eram positus ut mortuus, et intellectus meus alienatus erat, et tenuit dexteram meam, et confortavit me, et statuit me super pedes meos, et dixit mihi,

What aileth thee? and why is thy understanding, and the sense of thy heart troubled, and why art thou troubled? And I said:What ayleth thee? and why is thy vnderstanding, and the sense of thy hart trubled, & why art thou trubled? And I sayd:Quid tibi est ? et quare conturbatus est intellectus tuus, et sensus cordis tui ? et quare conturbaris ? Et dixi,

Because thou hast forsaken me, and I indeed have done according to thy words, and went out into the field: and behold, I have seen, and do see that which I cannot utter. And he said to me:Because thou hast forsaken me, and I in dede haue done according to thy wordes, & went out into the fild: & behold, I haue seene, & doe see that which I cannot vtter. And he sayd to me:Quoniam dereliquisti me, et ego quidem feci secundum sermones tuos, et exivi in campum : et ecce vidi, et video quòd non possum enarrare. Et dixit ad me,

Stand like a man, and I will move thee. And I said:Stand like a man, & I wil moue thee. And I sayd:Sta ut vir, et commonebo te. Et dixi,

Speak thou my Lord in me, forsake me not, that I die not in vain:Speake thou my Lord in me, forsake me not, that I die not in vaine:Loquere Domine meus tu in me, noli me derelinquere, ut non frustra moriar :

because I have seen things that I knew not, and I do hear things that I know not.because I haue seene thinges that I knew not, & I doe heare thinges that I know not.quoniam vidi quæ non sciebam, et audio quæ non scio.

Or is my sense deceived, and doth my soul dream?Or is my sense deceiued, & doth my soule dreame?Aut numquid sensus meus fallitur, et anima mea somniat ?

Now therefore I beseech thee, that thou shew unto thy servant concerning this trance. And he answered me, and said:Now therfore I besech thee, that thou shew vnto thy seruant concerning this trance. And he answered me, & sayd:Nunc ergo deprecor te, ut demonstres servo tuo de excessu hoc. Et respondit ad me, et dixit,

Hear me, and I will teach thee, and will tell thee of what things thou art afraid: because the Highest hath revealed unto thee many mysteries.Heare me, and I wil teach thee, and wil tel thee of what thinges thou art afrayd: because the Highest hath reuealed vnto thee manie mysteries.Audi me et doceam te, et dicam tibi de quibus times : quoniam Altissimus revelavit tibi mysteria multa.

He hath seen thy right way, that without intermission thou was sorrowful for thy people, and didst mourn exceedingly for Sion.He hath seene thy right way, that without intermission thou was sorrowful for thy people, and didst mourne exceedingly for Sion.Vidit rectam viam tuam, quoniam sine intermissione contristabaris pro populo tuo, et valde lugebas propter Sion.

This therefore is the understanding of the vision which appeared to thee a little before. This therfore is the vnderstanding of the vision which appeared to thee a litle before.Hic ergo intellectus visionis quæ tibi apparuit ante paululum.

The woman whom thou sawest mourning, thou beganst to comfort her.The woman whom thou sawest mourning, thou beganst to comfort her.Quam vidisti lugentem, inchoasti consolari eam.

And now thou seest not the form of the woman, but there appeared to thee a city to be built. And now thou seest not the forme of the woman, but there appeared to thee a citie to be built.Nunc autem jam speciem mulieris non vides, sed apparuit tibi civitas ædificari :

And because she told thee of the fall of her son, this is the interpretation. And because she tolde thee of the fal of her sonne, this is the interpretation.et quoniam enarrabat tibi de casu filii sui, hæc absolutio est.

This woman which thou sawest, she is Sion, and whereas she told thee of her, whom now also thou shalt see, as a city builded. This woman which thou sawest, she is Sion, and wheras she told thee of her, whom now also thou shalt see, as a citie builded.Hæc mulier quam vidisti, hæc est Sion : et quoniam dixit tibi quam et nunc conspicies, ut civitatem ædificatam.

And whereas she told thee, that she was barren thirty years: for the which there were thirty years, when there was not yet oblation offered in it.And wheras she told thee, that she was barren thirtie yeares: for the which there were thirtie yeares, when there was not yet oblation offered in it.Et quoniam dixit tibi, quia sterilis fuit triginta annis : propter quod erant anni scilicet triginta, quando non erat in ea adhuc oblatio oblata.

And it came to pass after thirty years, Salomon built the city, and offered oblations: then it was, when the barren bare a child. And it came to passe after thirtie yeares, Salomon built the citie, and offered oblations: then it was, when the barren bare a childe.Et factum est post annos triginta, ædificavit Salomon civitatem, et obtulit oblationes : tunc fuit quando peperit sterilis filium.

And that which she said unto thee, that she nourished him with labour, this was the habitation in Jerusalem. And that which she sayd vnto thee, that she nourished him with labour, this was the habitation in Ierusalem.Et quod tibi dixit, quoniam nutrivit eum cum labore, hoc erat, habitatio in Jerusalem.

And whereas she said to thee, that my son coming into the bride chamber died, and that a fall chanced unto him, this was the ruin of Jerusalem that is made. And wheras she sayd to thee, that my sonne comming into the bryde chamber dyed, and that a fal chanced vnto him, this was the ruine of Ierusalem that is made.Et quoniam dixit tibi, quòd filius meus veniens in suo thalamo mortuus esset, et contigisset ei casus, hoc erat, quæ facta est ruina Jerusalem.

And behold, thou hast seen the similitude of her: and because she lamented her son, thou beganst to comfort her: and of these things that have chanced, these were to be opened to thee. And behold, thou hast seene the similitude of her: and because she lamented her sonne, thou beganst to comfort her: and of these thinges that haue chanced, these were to be opened to thee.Et ecce, vidisti similitudinem ejus : et quoniam filium lugeret, inchoasti consolari eam : et de his quæ contigerunt, hæc erant tibi aperienda.

And now the Highest seeth that thou wast sorry from the heart: and because with thy whole heart thou suffered for her, he hath shewed thee the clearness of her glory, and the fairness of her beauty. And now the Highest seeth that thou wast sorie from the hart: and because with thy whole hart thou suffered for her, he hath shewed thee the clearnes of her glorie, and the fayrenes of her beautie.Et nunc videt Altissimus, quoniam ex animo contristatus es, et quoniam ex toto corde pateris pro ea, ostendit tibi claritatem gloriæ ejus, et pulchritudinem decoris ejus.

For therefore did he say to thee, that thou shouldest tarry in a field where house is not built:For therfore did he say to thee, that thou shouldest tarie in a field where house is not built:Propterea enim dixi tibi ut maneres in campo, ubi domus non est ædificata.

For I knew that the Highest began to shew thee these things:For I knew that the Highest beganne to shew thee these thinges:Sciebam enim ego, quoniam Altissimus incipiebat tibi ostendere hæc :

therefore I said unto thee, that thou shouldest go into a field, where is no foundation of building.therfore I sayd vnto thee, that thou shouldest goe into a field, where is no fundation of building.propterea dixi tibi ut venires in agrum ubi non est fundamentum ædificii.

For the work of man's building could not be borne in the place, where the city of the Highest began to be shewed. For the worke of mans building could not be borne in the place, where the citie of the Highest began to be shewed.Nec enim poterat opus ædificii hominis sustineri in loco ubi incipiebatur Altissimi civitas ostendi.

Thou therefore fear not, neither let thy heart dread: but go in, and see the beauty, and greatness of the building, as much as the sight of thine eyes is capable to see:Thou therfore feare not, neither let thy hart dread: but goe in, and see the beautie, and greatnes of the building, as much as the sight of thyne eyes is capable to see:Tu ergo noli timere, neque expavescat cor tuum : sed ingredere, et vide splendorem et magnitudinem ædificii, quantum capax est tibi visus oculorum videre :

and afterward thou shalt hear as much, as the hearing of thine ears is capable to hear.& afterward thou shalt heare as much, as the hearing of thyne eares is capable to heare.et post hæc audies quantum capit auditus aurium tuarum audire.

For thou art blessed above many, and art called with the Highest as few.For thou art blessed aboue manie, and art called with the Highest as few.Tu enim beatus es præ multis, et vocatus es apud Altissimum sicut et pauci.

And to morrow night thou shalt tarry here:And to morrow night thou shalt tarie here:Nocte autem, quæ in crastinum futura est, manebis hic :

and the Highest will shew thee those visions of the things on high, which the Highest will do to them that inhabit upon the earth in the later days.and the Highest wil shew thee those visions of the thinges on high, which the Highest wil doe to them that inhabite vpon the earth in the later dayes.et ostendet tibi Altissimus eas visiones supremorum, quæ faciet Altissimus his qui habitant super terram a novissimis diebus.

And I slept that night, and the other next, as he had said to me.And I slept that night, and the other next, as he had sayd to me.Et dormivi illam noctem et aliam, sicut dixerat mihi.
