Therefore if you be risen with Christ, seek the things that are above: where Christ is sitting on the right hand of God.THEREFORE if you be risen vvith Christ, seeke the things that are aboue: vvhere Christ is sitting on the right hand of God.✦Igitur, si consurrexistis cum Christo : quæ sursum sunt quærite, ubi Christus est in dextera Dei sedens :
2Mind the things that are above, not the things that are upon the earth.Minde the things that are aboue, not the things that are vpon the earth.quæ sursum sunt sapite, non quæ super terram.
3For you are dead: and your life is hid with Christ in God.For you are dead: and your life is hidde vvith Christ in God.✦Mortui enim estis, et vita vestra est abscondita cum Christo in Deo.
4When Christ shall appear, your life: then you also shall appear with him in glory.Vvhen Christ shal appeare, your life: then you also shal appeare vvith him in glorie. ⸿✦Cum Christus apparuerit, vita vestra : tunc et vos apparebitis cum ipso in gloria.
5Mortify therefore your members that are upon the earth, fornication, uncleanness, lust, evil concupiscence, and avarice, which is the service of idols.* Mortifie therfore your members that are vpon the earth, fornication, vncleannesse, lust, euil concupiscence, and auarice, vvhich is c the seruice of Idols.¶✦Mortificate ergo membra vestra, quæ sunt super terram : fornicationem, immunditiam, libidinem, concupiscentiam malam, et avaritiam, quæ est simulacrorum servitus :

8But now lay you also all away: anger, indignation, malice, blasphemy, filthy talk out of your mouth. But novv lay you also al avvay: anger, indignation, malice, blasphemie, filthie talke out of your mouth.Nunc autem deponite et vos omnia : iram, indignationem, malitiam, blasphemiam, turpem sermonem de ore vestro.
9Lie not one to another: spoiling yourselves of the old man with his acts,Lie not one to an other: * spoiling your selues of the old man vvith his actes,¶✦Nolite mentiri invicem, expoliantes vos veterem hominem cum actibus suis,
10and doing on the new, him that is renewed unto knowledge, according to the image of him that created him.and doing on the nevv, him that is renewed vnto knovvledge, * according to the image of him that created him.et induentes novum eum, qui renovatur in agnitionem secundum imaginem ejus qui creavit illum :
11where there is not, Gentile and Jew, circumcision and præputium: the foreskin, i.e. the uncircumcised, Barbarous and Scythian, bond and free: but all, and in all Christ.vvhere there is not, Gentile and Iew, circumcision and prepuce, Barbarous and Scythian, bonde and free: but al, and in al Christ.✦ubi non est gentilis et Judæus, circumcisio et præputium, Barbarus et Scytha, servus et liber : sed omnia, et in omnibus Christus.
12Put ye on therefore as the elect of God, holy, and beloved, the viscera: the heart, the seat of tender compassion: not the intestines of mercy, benignity, humility, modesty, patience,Put ye on therfore as the elect of God, holy, and beloued, the bovvels of mercie, benignitie, humilitie, modestie, patience,✦Induite vos ergo, sicut electi Dei, sancti, et dilecti, viscera misericordiæ, benignitatem, humilitatem, modestiam, patientiam :
13supporting one another: and pardoning one another, if any have a quarrel against any man. as also our Lord hath pardoned us: so you also.¶ supporting one an other: and pardoning one an other, if any haue a quarel against any man. as also our Lord hath pardoned vs: so you also.supportantes invicem, et donantes vobismetipsis si quis adversus aliquem habet querelam : sicut et Dominus donavit vobis, ita et vos.
14But above all these things have charity, which is the band of perfection:But aboue al these things haue charitie, vvhich is the band of perfection:✦Super omnia autem hæc, caritatem habete, quod est vinculum perfectionis :
15and the peace of Christ exult in your hearts, wherein also you are called in one body: and be thankful.and the peace of Christ * exult in your hartes, vvherein also you are called in one body: and be thankeful.✦et pax Christi exsultet in cordibus vestris, in qua et vocati estis in uno corpore : et grati estote.
16Let the word of Christ dwell in you abundantly, in all wisdom: teaching and admonishing your own selves, with psalms, hymns, and spiritual canticles, in grace singing in your hearts to God.Let the vvord of Christ dvvel in you aboundantly, in al vvisedom: teaching and admonishing your ovvne selues, vvith psalmes, hymnes, and spiritual canticles, in grace singing in your hartes to God.✦Verbum Christi habitet in vobis abundanter, in omni sapientia, docentes, et commonentes vosmetipsos, psalmis, hymnis, et canticis spiritualibus, in gratia cantantes in cordibus vestris Deo.
17All whatsoever you do in word or in work, all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.Al vvhatsoeuer you doe in vvord or in vvorke, al things in the name of our Lord IESVS Christ, giuing thankes to God and the Father by him. ¶✦Omne, quodcumque facitis in verbo aut in opere, omnia in nomine Domini Jesu Christi, gratias agentes Deo et Patri per ipsum.
18Women be subject to your husbands, as it behoveth in our Lord.* Vvomen be subiect to your husbands, as it behoueth in our Lord.✦Mulieres, subditæ estote viris, sicut oportet, in Domino.
19Men, love your wives: and be not bitter toward them.* Men, loue your vviues: and be not bitter tovvard them.Viri, diligite uxores vestras, et nolite amari esse ad illas.

Domino Christo servite.
25For he that doeth injuria: a wrong, an injustice, shall receive that which he hath done unjustly: and there is not accepted of persons with God.For he that doeth iniurie, shal receiue that vvhich he hath done iniustly: and * there is not accepted of persons vvith God.✦Qui enim injuriam facit, recipiet id quod inique gessit : et non est personarum acceptio apud Deum.

5Avarice, which is the service of idols. Here is a marvellous impudent and foolish corruption in the vulgar English Bible printed the year 1577 and (as it seemeth) most authorised. Where for their error against the Images of Christ and his Saints, and to make image and idol, all one: the translator, for that which the Apostle saith in Greek, Covetousness is idolatry, maketh him to say in English, Covetousness is worshipping of images: as also Ephesians 5 he translateth thus, The covetous person is a worshipper of images: for that which the Apostle saith, The covetous man is an idolater, meaning spiritual idolatry, because he maketh money his God. In which sense to call this spiritual idolatry, worshipping of images, is too ridiculous, and must needs proceed of blind heresy.Auarice, vvhich is the seruice of idols. 9Doing on the new. By this and the whole discourse of this chapter containing an exhortation to good life, and to put on the habit of the new man with all virtues: we may see, that justice in Christ to be a very quality and form inherent in our soul, adorning the same, and not an imputative only of Christ's righteousness, or a hiding only of our sins and wickedness, which the heretics falsely affirm to remain in us after baptism and always during life. See St. Augustine de peccatorum meritis & remissione li. 2 c. 7. & contra Julianum li. 6.Doing on the nevv. By this and the vvhole discourse of this chapter containing an exhortation to good life, and to put on the habite of the nevv man vvith al vertues: vve may see, that iustice in Christ to be a very qualitie and forme inherent in our soul, adorning the same, and not an imputatiue onely of Christes righteousnes, or a hiding onely of our sinnes and vvickednes, vvhich the Heretikes falsely affirme to remaine in vs after baptisme and alvvaies during life.
