By example of Christ (who is incomparably more excellent than Moyses also) he exhorteth them to be faithful unto God. 7 Their reward shall be to enter into everlasting rest, if they persevere, as contrariwise to be excluded (as was shadowed in their forefathers in the wilderness) if they sin and become incredulous.By example of Christ (who is incomparably more excellent then Moyses also) he exhorteth them to be faithful vnto God. 7 Their reward shal be to enter into euerlasting rest, if they perseuere, as contrariwise to be excluded (as was shadowed in their forefathers in the wildernes) if they sinne and become incredulous.✦
Wherefore holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly vocation, consider the Apostle, and high priest of our confessionis: the faith we profess, not an admission of guilt Jesus:WHEREFORE holy brethren, partakers of the heauenly vocation, consider the Apostle, & high priest of our confession IESVS:✦Unde, fratres sancti, vocationis cælestis participes, considerate Apostolum, et pontificem confessionis nostræ Jesum :
who is faithful to him that made him, as also Moyses in all his house.who is faithful to him that made him, as also * Moyses in al his house.✦qui fidelis est ei, qui fecit illum, sicut et Moyses in omni domo ejus.
For, this man is esteemed worthy of more ample glory above Moyses, by so much as more ample glory than the house, hath he that fabricavit: built, constructed it.For, this man is esteemed worthie of more ample glorie aboue Moyses, by so much as more ample glorie then the house, hath he that framed it.✦Amplioris enim gloriæ iste præ Moyse dignus est habitus, quanto ampliorem honorem habet domus, qui fabricavit illam.
For every house is framed of some man. but he that created all things, is God.For euery house is framed of some man. but he that created al things, is God.✦Omnis namque domus fabricatur ab aliquo : qui autem omnia creavit, Deus est.
And Moyses indeed was faithful in all his house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be said:And Moyses in deede was faithful in al his house as a seruant, for a testimonie of those things which were to be said:✦Et Moyses quidem fidelis erat in tota domo ejus tamquam famulus, in testimonium eorum, quæ dicenda erant :
but Christ as the Son in his own house: which house are we, if we keep firm the confidence and glory of hope unto the end.but Christ as the Sonne in his owne house: which house are we, if we keepe firme the confidence and glorie of hope vnto the end.✦Christus vero tamquam filius in domo sua : quæ domus sumus nos, si fiduciam, et gloriam spei usque ad finem, firmam retineamus.
Wherefore, as the holy Ghost saith, Today if you shall hear his voice,Wherefore, as the holy Ghost saith, To day if you shal heare his voice,✦Quapropter sicut dicit Spiritus Sanctus : Hodie si vocem ejus audieritis,
harden not your hearts as in the exacerbatione: a provoking to anger, not a worsening according to the day of tentationis: temptation, trial in the desert, harden not your hartes as in the exacerbation according to the day of tentation in the desert,✦nolite obdurare corda vestra, sicut in exacerbatione secundum diem tentationis in deserto,
where your fathers tempted me: proved and saw my workswhere your fathers tempted me: proued & saw my workes✦ubi tentaverunt me patres vestri : probaverunt, et viderunt opera mea
forty years. For the which cause I was offended with this generation, and said, They do always err in heart. And they have not known my ways.fourtie yeres. For the which cause I was offended with this generation, and said, They doe alwaies erre in hart. And they haue not knowen my waies.quadraginta annis : propter quod infensus fui generationi huic, et dixi : Semper errant corde. Ipsi autem non cognoverunt vias meas,
to whom I juravi: swore in my wrath, If they shall enter into my rest.to whom I sware in my wrath, If they shal enter into my rest.✦sicut juravi in ira mea : Si introibunt in requiem meam.
Beware brethren, lest perhaps there be in some of you an evil heart of incredulitatis: unbelief, lack of faith, not mere disbelief of a report, to depart from the living God.Beware brethren, lest perhaps there be in some of you an euil hart of incredulitie, to depart from the liuing God.Videte fratres, ne forte sit in aliquo vestrum cor malum incredulitatis, discedendi a Deo vivo :
but exhort yourselves every day, while today is named, that none of you be obduretur: hardened, used as a verb: made stubborn with the fallacia: deceit or guile, not a logical error of sin,but exhort your selues euery day, whiles to day is named, that none of you be obdurate with the fallacie of sinne,✦sed adhortamini vosmetipsos per singulos dies, donec hodie cognominatur, ut non obduretur quis ex vobis fallacia peccati.
For we be made partakers of Christ: yet so if we keep the beginning of his substantiae: confident assurance, the ground of confidence firm unto the end.For we be made partakers of Christ: yet so if we keepe the ∷ beginning of his substance firme vnto the end.✦Participes enim Christi effecti sumus, si tamen initium substantiæ ejus usque ad finem firmum retineamus.
While it is said, Today if you shall hear his voice, do not obdurate your hearts as in that exacerbation. While it is said, To day if you shal heare his voice, do not obdurate your hartes as in that exacerbation.Dum dicitur : Hodie si vocem ejus audieritis, nolite obdurare corda vestra, quemadmodum in illa exacerbatione.
For some hearing did exacerbaverunt: provoked God to anger, not merely irritated: but not all they that went out of Egypt by Moyses. For some hearing did exasperate: but not al they that went out of Ægypt by Moyses.✦Quidam enim audientes exacerbaverunt : sed non universi qui profecti sunt ex Ægypto per Moysen.
And with whom was he offended forty years? was it not with them that sinned, whose carcasses were overthrown in the desert? And with whom was he offended fourtie yeres? was it not with them that sinned, * whose carcasses were ouerthrowen in the desert?✦Quibus autem infensus est quadraginta annis ? nonne illis qui peccaverunt, quorum cadavera prostrata sunt in deserto ?
And to whom did he swear that they should not enter into his rest: but to them that were increduli: unbelieving, without faith, not skeptical of a report? And to whom did he sweare that they should not enter into his rest: but to them that were incredulous?Quibus autem juravit non introire in requiem ipsius, nisi illis qui increduli fuerunt ?
And we see that they could not enter in, because of incredulity. And we see that they could not enter in, because of incredulitie.✦Et videmus, quia non potuerunt introire propter incredulitatem.
