Joel — Book front (modern spelling)

The Original Douay-Rheims (1582/1609), orthography normalized only: spelling regularized and apparatus names modernized, while the 1609 vocabulary, pronouns, and -eth/-est endings are kept. Latinate proper names are kept (Joel, Phatuel, Bethoron, Issachar, Osee), only the universally-recognized forms modernized (Juda, Jerusalem, Sion). This short book-argument sketches Joel son of Phatuel of the tribe of Issachar, the dating of his prophecy to the same time as Osee, his prophecy to the kingdom of Juda, the whole land wasted by the Eruke, Locust, Bruke, and Blast, and after the eversion of that people the coming of the Holy Ghost and the general Judgement.

The Prophecy of Joel

Joel the son of Phatuel born in Bethoron, of the tribe of Issachar; prophesied the same time, or part thereof, with Osee, according to S. Jerome's rule, approved by most expositors, that when any of these twelve Prophets expresseth not what time he wrote, the same time is understood which the precedent prophet noteth. He prophesied to the kingdom of Juda, as appeareth by express mention of Sacrifice, Priests, house of God, Jerusalem, and Sion; but describeth also the whole land of twelve tribes, consumed by the Eruke, Locust, Bruke, and Blast. And after the eversion of the former people, the coming of the Holy Ghost upon the servants of God men and women: the 120 faithful gathered in the chamber in Sion. Finally foreshowing the general Judgement, and future eternal world.
