and he said to them: Tell me what is this people which besetteth the mountains: or what, and of what sort, and how great their cities are: also what their power is, or what is their multitude: or who is the king of their warfare:and he sayd to them: Tel me what is this people which besetteth the mountaynes: or what, and of what sorte, and how great their cities are: also what their power is, or what is their multitude: or who is the king of their warfare:✦et dixit eis : Dicite mihi quis sit populus iste, qui montana obsidet : aut quæ, et quales, et quantæ sint civitates eorum : quæ etiam sit virtus eorum, aut quæ sit multitudo eorum, vel quis rex militiæ illorum :
and why above all that dwell in the East, have these contempserunt: despised, scorned: not condemned us, and have not come forth to meet us, that they might receive us with peace?and why aboue al that dwel in the East, haue these contemned vs, and haue not come forth to meete vs, that they might receiue vs with peace?✦et quare præ omnibus qui habitant in oriente, isti contempserunt nos, et non exierunt obviam nobis ut susciperent nos cum pace ?
Then Achior captain of all the children of Ammon answering, said: If thou vouchsafe my Lord to hear, I will tell the truth in thy sight of this people, which dwelleth in the mountains, and there shall not a false word come forth of my mouth. Then Achior captaine of al the children of Ammon answering, said: If thou woutsafe my Lord to heare, I wil tel the truth in thy sight of this people, which dwelleth in the mountaynes, and there shal not a false word come forth of my mouth.✦Tunc Achior dux omnium filiorum Ammon respondens, ait : Si digneris audire, domine mi, dicam veritatem in conspectu tuo de populo isto qui in montanis habitat, et non egredietur verbum falsum ex ore meo.
This people is of the progeny of the Chaldees. This people is of the progenie of the Chaldees.✦Populus iste ex progenie Chaldæorum est.

they worshipped one God of heaven, who also commanded them that they should depart from thence, and should dwell in Charan. And when there was famine over all the land, they went down into Egypt, and there for four hundred years were so multiplied, that the exercitus: army, military multitude of them could not be numbered.⟦right-margin (at 5:9)⟧ they worshipped one God of heauen, who also commanded them that they should depart from thence, and should dwel in Charan. Cumque operuisset omnem terram fames, descenderunt in Ægyptum, illicque per quadringentos annos sic multiplicati sunt, ut dinumerari eorum non posset exercitus.
And when the king of Egypt oppressed them, and in the buildings of his cities had subdued them in brick and clay, they cried to their Lord, and he percussit: struck, past of strike the whole Land of Egypt with divers plagues.⟦right-margin (at 5:10)⟧ And when the king of Ægypt oppressed them, and in the buildinges of his cities had subdewed them in brick and claye, they cried to their Lord, and he stroke the whole Land of Ægypt with diuers plagues.Cumque gravaret eos rex Ægypti, atque in ædificationibus urbium suarum in luto et latere subjugasset eos, clamaverunt ad Dominum suum, et percussit totam terram Ægypti plagis variis.

In which place whiles an innumerable army of the Egyptians pursued them, they were so overwhelmed with the waters, that there was not one remaining, to tell the factum: a true statement; deed, thing done to posterity. In which place whiles an innumerable armie of the Ægyptians pursewed them, they were so ouerwhelmed with the waters, that there was not one remayning, to tel the fact to posteritie.✦In quo loco dum innumerabilis exercitus Ægyptiorum eos persequeretur, ita aquis coopertus est, ut non remaneret vel unus, qui factum posteris nuntiaret.
Also being past the Red sea, they possessed the deserts of Mount Sinai, in which never man could dwell, or son of man rested.⟦right-margin (at 5:14)⟧ Also being past the read sea, they possessed the desertes of Mount Sinai, in which neuer man could dwel, or sonne of man rested.Egressi vero mare Rubrum, deserta Sina montis occupaverunt, in quibus numquam homo habitare potuit, vel filius hominis requievit.
There bitter fountains were made sweet for them to drink, and for forty years they received annonam: animal flesh; food in general from heaven. There bitter fountaynes were made sweete for them to drinke, and for fourtie yeares they receiued meate from heauen.Illic fontes amari obdulcati sunt eis ad bibendum, et per annos quadraginta annonam de cælo consecuti sunt.
Wheresoever they entered without bow and arrow, and without shield and sword, their God fought for them, and overcame.Wheresoeuer they entered without bow and arrow, and without shielde and sword, their God fought for them, and ouercame.Ubicumque ingressi sunt sine arcu et sagitta, et absque scuto et gladio, Deus eorum pugnavit pro eis, et vicit.
And there was not that did insultaret: to affront with words; to exult or triumph insolently over against this people, but when they departed from the worship of the Lord their God.⟦right-margin (at 5:17)⟧ And there was not that did insult against this people, but when they departed from the worship of the Lord their God.✦Et non fuit qui insultaret populo isti, nisi quando recessit a cultu Domini Dei sui.
But as often as beside their own God, they worshipped another, they were given to prædam: a hunted animal; plunder, spoil, booty, and into the sword, and to reproach. But as often as beside their owne God, they worshiped an other, they were geuen to praye, and into the sword, and to reproch.Quotiescumque autem præter ipsum Deum suum, alterum coluerunt, dati sunt in prædam, et in gladium, et in opprobrium.
And as often as they were penitent for that they revolted from the worship of their God, the God of heaven gave them power to resist. And as often as they were penitent for that they reuolted from the worship of their God, the God of heauen gaue them power to resist.Quotiescumque autem pœnituerunt se recessisse a cultura Dei sui, dedit eis Deus cæli virtutem resistendi.
Finally the king of the Chananeites, and of Jebuseites, and of the Pherezeites, and of the Hetheites, and of the Heveites, and of the Amorrheites, and all the mighty in Hesebon they overthrew, and they possessed their lands, and their cities:⟦left-margin (at 5:20)⟧ Finally the king of the Chananeites, and of Iebuseites, and of the Pherezeites, and of the Hetheites, and of the Heueites, and of the Amorrheites, and al the mightie in Hesebon they ouerthrew, and they possessed their landes, & their cities:Denique Chananæum regem, et Jebusæum, et Pherezæum, et Hethæum, et Hevæum, et Amorrhæum, et omnes potentes in Hesebon prostraverunt, et terras eorum et civitates eorum ipsi possederunt :
and as long as they sinned not in the sight of their God, it was well with them, for their God hateth iniquity.and as long as they sinned not in the sight of their God, it was wel with them, for their God hateth iniquitie.et usque dum non peccarent in conspectu Dei sui, erant cum illis bona : Deus enim illorum odit iniquitatem.
For these years also past when they had revolted from the way, which God had given them, that they should walk in it, they were destroyed in battles by many nations, and very many of them were led captive into a strange land. For these yeares also past when they had reuolted from the way, which God had geuen them, that they should walke in it, they were destroyed in battels by manie nations, and verie manie of them were led captiue into a strange land.✦Nam et ante hos annos cum recessissent a via quam dederat illis Deus ut ambularent in ea, exterminati sunt præliis a multis nationibus, et plurimi eorum captivi abducti sunt in terram non suam.
But of late returning to the Lord their God, from the dispersion wherein they were dispersed, they are united and are come up into all these mountains, and possess Jerusalem again where their Holies are.But of late returning to the Lord their God, from the dispersion wherein they were dispersed, they are vnited & are come vp into al these mountaynes, and possesse Ierusalem againe where their Holies are.Nuper autem reversi ad Dominum Deum suum, ex dispersione qua dispersi fuerant, adunati sunt, et ascenderunt montana hæc omnia, et iterum possident Jerusalem, ubi sunt sancta eorum.
Now therefore my Lord, search if there be any iniquity of theirs in the sight of their God: and let us go up to them, because their God delivering will deliver them to thee, and they shall be subdued under the yoke of thy power:Now therfore my Lord, search if there be any iniquitie of theirs in the sight of their God: and let vs goe vp to them, because their God deliuering wil deliuer them to thee, and they shal be subdewed vnder the yoke of thy power:Nunc ergo mi domine, perquire si est aliqua iniquitas eorum in conspectu Dei eorum : ascendamus ad illos, quoniam tradens tradet illos Deus eorum tibi, et subjugati erunt sub jugo potentiæ tuæ.
but if there be no offence of this people before their God, we can not resist them, because their God will defend them: and we shall be a reproach to the whole earth.but if there be no offence of this people before their God, we can not resist them, because their God wil defend them: and we shal be a reproche to the whole earth.✦Si vero non est offensio populi hujus coram Deo suo, non poterimus resistere illis, quoniam Deus eorum defendet illos : et erimus in opprobrium universæ terræ.
And it came to pass, when Achior had ceased to speak these words, all the great men of Holofernes were angry, and they thought to kill him, saying to each other:And it came to passe, when Achior had ceased to speake these wordes, al the great men of Holofernes were angrie, and they thought to kil him, saying to each other:Et factum est, cum cessasset loqui Achior verba hæc, irati sunt omnes magnates Holofernis, et cogitabant interficere eum, dicentes ad alterutrum :
who is this, that saith the children of Israel can resist king Nabuchodonosor, and his armies, men unarmed, and without force, and without skill of the feats of war?who is this, that sayth the children of Israel can resist king Nabuchodonosor, and his armies, men vnarmed, and without force, and without skil of the feates of warre?Quis est iste, qui filios Israël posse dicat resistere regi Nabuchodonosor et exercitibus ejus, homines inermes, et sine virtute, et sine peritia artis pugnæ ?
That Achior therefore may know that he deceiveth us, let us go up into the mountains: and when their mighty ones shall be taken, then shall he with them be transverberabitur: struck through, thrust through through with the sword:That Achior therfore may know that he deceiueth vs, let vs goe vp into the mountaynes: and when their mightie ones shal be taken, then shal he with them be strooken through with the sword:Ut ergo agnoscat Achior quoniam fallit nos, ascendamus in montana : et cum capti fuerint potentes eorum, tunc cum eisdem gladio transverberabitur :
that every nation may know that Nabuchodonosor is God of the earth, and besides him there is none other.that euerie nation may know that Nabuchodonosor is God of the earth, and besides him there is none other.ut sciat omnis gens quoniam Nabuchodonosor deus terræ est, et præter ipsum alius non est.
