Having signified that he useth to thank God for their virtue, 9 and also to pray for their increase: 12 he certifieth them (for their confirmation and comfort) what good was come through his trouble at Rome, 21 and that he doubteth not (though he rather desire martyrdom) but to come again unto them, 27 exhorting them to live as they ought to do, 28 and namely not to shrink for persecution.Hauing signified that he vseth to thanke God for their vertue, 9 and also to pray for their encrease : 12 he certifieth them (for their confirmatiō & comfort) vvhat good vvas come through his trouble at Rome, 21 & that he doubteth not (though he rather desire martyrdom) but to come againe vnto them, 27 exhorting them to liue as they ought to do, 28 and namely not to shrinke for persecution.

Paul and Timothy the servants of Jesus Christ: to all the saints in Christ Jesus that are at Philippi, with the Bishops and Deacons.PAVL and Timothee the seruants of IESVS Christ : to al the sainctes in Christ IESVS that are at Philippi, vvith the Bishops and Deacons.Paulus et Timotheus, servi Jesu Christi, omnibus sanctis in Christo Jesu, qui sunt Philippis, cum episcopis et diaconibus.

2Grace to you and peace from God our father, and our Lord Jesus Christ.Grace to you and peace from God our father, and our Lord IESVS Christ.Gratia vobis, et pax a Deo Patre nostro, et Domino Jesu Christo.

3I give thanks to my God in all memory of youI giue thankes to my God in al memorie of youGratias ago Deo meo in omni memoria vestri,

4(always in all my prayers for all you, with joy making petition)( alvvaies in al my praiers for al you, vvith ioy making petition )semper in cunctis orationibus meis pro omnibus vobis, cum gaudio deprecationem faciens,

5for your communicating in the Gospel of Christ from the first day until now,for your communicating in the Gospel of Christ from the first day vntil novv, super communicatione vestra in Evangelio Christi a prima die usque nunc.

6trusting this same thing, that he which hath begun in you a good work, will perficiet: bring to completion, accomplish it unto the day of Christ Jesus:trusting this same thing, that he vvhich hath begonne in you a good vvorke, vvil perfit it vnto the day of Christ IESVS :Confidens hoc ipsum, quia qui cœpit in vobis opus bonum, perficiet usque in diem Christi Jesu :

7as it is reason for me, this to think for all you, for that I have you in heart, and in my vinculis: bonds, imprisonment : not a company or troop, and in the defence, and the confirmation of the Gospel, all you to be partakers of my joy.as it is reason for me, this to thinke for al you, for that I haue you in hart, & in my bandes, and in the defense, and the confirmation of the Gospel, al you to be partakers of my ioy.sicut est mihi justum hoc sentire pro omnibus vobis : eo quod habeam vos in corde, et in vinculis meis, et in defensione, et confirmatione Evangelii, socios gaudii mei omnes vos esse.

8For God is my witness, how I covet you all in the visceribus: tender affections, the heart : not the entrails of Jesus Christ. For God is my vvitnes, hovv I couet you al in the bovvels of IESVS Christ.Testis enim mihi est Deus, quomodo cupiam omnes vos in visceribus Jesu Christi.

9And this I pray, that your charity may more and more abound in knowledge and in all understanding:And this I pray, that your charitie may more and more abound in knovvledge and in al vnderstanding :Et hoc oro, ut caritas vestra magis ac magis abundet in scientia, et in omni sensu :

10that you may approve the better things, that you may be sincere and without offence unto the day of Christ, that you may approue the better things, that you may be sincere and vvithout offence vnto the day of Christ,ut probetis potiora, ut sitis sinceri, et sine offensa in diem Christi,

11replenished with the fruit of justice by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.replenished vvith the fruite of iustice by IESVS Christ, vnto the glorie and praise of God.repleti fructu justitiæ per Jesum Christum, in gloriam et laudem Dei.

12And I will have you know brethren, that the things about me are come to the more furtherance of the Gospel:¶ And I vvil haue you knovv brethren, that the things about me are come to the more furtherance of the Gospel :Scire autem vos volo fratres, quia quæ circa me sunt, magis ad profectum venerunt Evangelii :

13so that my bands were made manifest in Christ in all the prætorio: the praetorium, the imperial governor's palace and guard, and in all the rest,so that my bandes vvere made manifest in Christ in al the court, and in al the rest, ita ut vincula mea manifesta fierent in Christo in omni prætorio, et in ceteris omnibus,

14that many of our brethren in our Lord, having confidence in my bands, were bold more abundantly without fear to speak the word of God.that many of our brethren in our Lord, hauing confidence in my bandes, vvere bold more abundantly vvithout feare to speake the vvord of God.et plures e fratribus in Domino confidentes vinculis meis, abundantius auderent sine timore verbum Dei loqui.

15Some indeed even for envy and contention: but some also for good will preach Christ. Some in deede euen for enuie and contention : but some also for good vvil preache Christ.Quidam quidem et propter invidiam et contentionem : quidam autem et propter bonam voluntatem Christum prædicant :

16Some of charity: knowing that I am set unto the defence of the Gospel. Some of charitie : knovving that I am set vnto the defense of the Gospel.quidam ex caritate, scientes quoniam in defensionem Evangelii positus sum.

17And some of contention preach Christ not sincerely: supposing that they raise affliction to my bands. And some of contention preache Christ not sincerely : supposing that they raise affliction to my bandes.Quidam autem ex contentione Christum annuntiant non sincere, existimantes pressuram se suscitare vinculis meis.

18But what? So that by all means, whether by occasion, or by truth, Christ be preached: in this also I rejoice, yea and will rejoice. But vvhat? So that by al meanes, vvhether by occasion, or by truth, Christ be preached : in this also I reioyce, yea & vvil reioyce.Quid enim ? Dum omni modo sive per occasionem, sive per veritatem, Christus annuntietur : et in hoc gaudeo, sed et gaudebo.

19For I know that this shall fall out to me unto salvation by your prayer and the subministration of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,For I knovv that this shal fal out to me vnto saluatiō by your praier and the subministration of the Spirit of IESVS Christ,Scio enim quia hoc mihi proveniet ad salutem, per vestram orationem, et subministrationem Spiritus Jesu Christi,

20according to my expectation and hope, because in nothing I shall be confounded, but in all confidence as always, now also shall Christ be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.according to my expectation & hope, because in nothing I shal be confounded, but in al confidence as alvvaies, novv also shal Christ be magnified in my body, vvhether it be by life, or by death.secundum exspectationem et spem meam, quia in nullo confundar : sed in omni fiducia sicut semper, et nunc magnificabitur Christus in corpore meo, sive per vitam, sive per mortem.

21For unto me, to live is Christ: and to die is gain. For vnto me, to liue is Christ : and to die is gaine.Mihi enim vivere Christus est, et mori lucrum.

22And if to live in the flesh, this unto me be the fruit of the work, and what I shall choose I know not.And if to liue in the flesh, this vnto me be the fruit of the vvorke, and vvhat I shal choose I knovv not.Quod si vivere in carne, hic mihi fructus operis est, et quid eligam ignoro.

23I am coarctor: hard pressed, hemmed in on both sides of the two: having desire to be dissolvi: to depart this life, to die : not melted and to be with Christ, a thing much more better:I am straitened of the tvvo : hauing desire to be dissolued & to be vvith Christ, a thing much more better :Coarctor autem e duobus : desiderium habens dissolvi, et esse cum Christo, multo magis melius :

24but to abide in the flesh, necessary for you.but to abide in the flesh, necessarie for you.permanere autem in carne, necessarium propter vos.

25And trusting this, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all, unto your furtherance and joy of the faith:And trusting this, I knovv that I shal abide and continue vvith you al, vnto your furtherance and ioy of the faith :Et hoc confidens scio quia manebo, et permanebo omnibus vobis ad profectum vestrum, et gaudium fidei :

26that your gratulatio: rejoicing, glorying : not congratulation may abound in Christ Jesus in me, by my coming again to you.that your gratulation may abound in Christ IESVS in me, by my comming againe to you.ut gratulatio vestra abundet in Christo Jesu in me, per meum adventum iterum ad vos.

27Only conversamini: behave, conduct yourselves : not talk together ye worthy of the Gospel of Christ: that whether when I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of you that you stand in one Spirit, of one mind labouring together to the faith of the Gospel:Only * conuerse ye vvorthie of the Gospel of Christ : that vvhether vvhen I come and see you, or els be absent, I may heare of you that you stand in one Spirit, of one minde labouring together to the faith of the Gospel :Tantum digne Evangelio Christi conversamini : ut sive cum venero, et videro vos, sive absens audiam de vobis, quia statis in uno spiritu unanimes, collaborantes fidei Evangelii :

28And in nothing be ye terrified of the adversaries, which to them is cause of perdition: but to you of salvation, and this of God:And in nothing be ye terrified of the aduersaries, vvhich to them is b cause of perdition : but to you of saluation, & this of God :et in nullo terreamini ab adversariis : quæ illis est causa perditionis, vobis autem salutis, et hoc a Deo :

29for to you it is given for Christ, not only that you believe in him, but also that you suffer for him,for to you c it is giuen for Christ, not only that you beleeue in him, but also that you suffer for him, quia vobis donatum est pro Christo, non solum ut in eum credatis, sed ut etiam pro illo patiamini :

30having the same combat like as you have seen in me, and now have heard of me.hauing the same combat like as you haue seen in me, and novv haue heard of me.idem certamen habentes, quale et vidistis in me, et nunc audistis de me.

2Bishops and deacons. Wycliffe and other Heretics would prove by this that Priests are not here named, and for that there could not be many Bishops of this one town, that there is no difference betwixt a Bishop and a Priest, which was the old heresy of Aerius, of which matter, in other places: for this present it is enough to know that in the Apostles' time there were not observed always proper distinct names of either function, as they were quickly afterward, though they were always divers degrees and distinct functions. See St. Chrysostom, Oecumenius, Theophylact, and the rest of the Grecians upon this place. Margin (\): See Annot. Tit. 1. v. 5.Bishops and deacons.
