10He redeemed them. What price (or ransom) saith S. Augustine, was given in this redemption? Or is it a prophecy, that this was done in figure of Baptism, where we are redeemed from the hand of the devil, by a great price, which is the blood of Christ? Whereupon it was more conveniently figured, not by what sea soever, but by the Red sea. For blood hath red colour. And touching the effect of Baptism destroying all former sins, he teacheth in the exposition of the next Psalm (and either the same holy father, or some other good author, Ser. 42. de temp) that as the Israelites passed safely through the Red sea, and all the Egyptians going in with them were drowned: so the baptised are saved in the water of Baptism, and all their sins are destroyed.He redeemed them.
