4For he said: Let us anticipemus: forestall, act first to make peace with him, before he make with Alexander against us:For he sayd: Let vs preuent to make peace with him, before he make with Alexander against vs:Dixit enim : Anticipemus facere pacem cum eo, priusquam faciat cum Alexandro adversum nos :
5for he will remember all the evils, that we have done against him, and against his brother, and against his nation.for he wil remember al the euils, that we haue done against him, and against his brother, and against his nation.recordabitur enim omnium malorum, quæ fecimus in eum, et in fratrem ejus, et in gentem ejus.
6And he gave him authority to gather an army, and to make weapons, and to be himself his socius: partner, ally: and the hostages that were in the castle, he commanded to be delivered to him.And he gaue him authoritie to gather an armie, and to make weapons, and to be himself his felow: and the hostages that were in the castel, he commanded to be deliuered to him.✦Et dedit ei potestatem congregandi exercitum, et fabricare arma, et esse ipsum socium ejus : et obsides, qui erant in arce, jussit tradi ei.

9And the hostages were delivered to Jonathas, and he rendered them to their parents.And the hostages were deliuered to Ionathas, & he rendered them to their parents.Et traditi sunt Jonathæ obsides, et reddidit eos parentibus suis :
10And Jonathas dwelt in Jerusalem, and began to build, and to renew the city.And Ionathas dwelt in Ierusalem, and began to build, and to renew the citie.✦et habitavit Jonathas in Jerusalem, et cœpit ædificare et innovare civitatem.
11And he spake to them that made the works, that they should build the walls, and mount Sion round about with square stones for munitionem: fortification: and so they did.And he spake to them that made the workes, that they should build the walles, and mount Sion round about with square stones for munition: and so they did.Et dixit facientibus opera ut exstruerent muros, et montem Sion in circuitu lapidibus quadratis ad munitionem : et ita fecerunt.

16and he said: Why, shall we find any such man? and now we will make him a friend, and our fellow.and he sayd: Why, shal we find any such man? and now we wil make him a freind, & our felow.et ait : Numquid inveniemus aliquem virum talem ? et nunc faciemus eum amicum, et socium nostrum.

19We have heard of thee, that thou art mighty of power, and art meet to be our friend:We haue heard of thee, that thou art mightie of powre, and art meete to be our freind:Audivimus de te quod vir potens sis viribus, et aptus es ut sis amicus noster :
20and now we make thee this day high priest of thy nation, that thou be called the king's friend (and he sent him purple, and a crown of gold) and in our affairs thou be of one mind with us, and keep amity towards us.& now we make thee this day high priest of thy nation, that thou be called the kings freind (and he sent him purple, and a crowne of gold) and in our affayres thou be of one minde with vs, and keepe amitie towards vs.✦et nunc constituimus te hodie summum sacerdotem gentis tuæ, et ut amicus voceris regis (et misit ei purpuram, et coronam auream) et quæ nostra sunt sentias nobiscum, et conserves amicitias ad nos.
21And Jonathas put on him the holy stola: robe, vestment the seventh month, in the year an hundred threescore in the solemn day of Scenopegia: and he gathered an army, and made very many weapons.And Ionathas put on him the holie stole the seuenth moneth, in the yeare an hundreth threescore in the solemne day of Scenopegia: and he gathered an armie, and made very manie weapons.✦Et induit se Jonathas stola sancta septimo mense, anno centesimo sexagesimo, in die solemni scenopegiæ : et congregavit exercitum, et fecit arma copiosa.

23What is this that we have done, that Alexander hath prevented us to take the friendship of the Jews for his strength?What is this that we haue done, that Alexander hath preuented vs to take the frendshippe of the Iewes for his strength?Quid hoc fecimus, quod præoccupavit nos Alexander apprehendere amicitiam Judæorum ad munimen sui ?
24I also will write to them words of request, and dignities, and gifts: that they may be with me to aid me.I also wil write to them wordes of request, and dignities, and gifts: that they may be with me to ayde me.scribam et ego illis verba deprecatoria, et dignitates, et dona, ut sint mecum in adjutorium.
25And he wrote to them in these words: KING Demetrius to the nation of the Jews greeting.And he wrote to them in these wordes: KING Demetrius to the nation of the Iewes greeting.Et scripsit eis in hæc verba : Rex Demetrius genti Judæorum salutem.
26Because you have kept covenant towards us, and have continued in our amity, and have not joined to our enemies, we have heard of it, and are glad.Because you haue kept couenant towards vs, and haue continewed in our amitie, and haue not ioyned to our enemies, we haue heard of it, & are glad.✦Quoniam servastis ad nos pactum, et mansistis in amicitia nostra, et non accessistis ad inimicos nostros, audivimus, et gavisi sumus.
27And now persevere still to keep fidelity towards us, and we will reward you with good things, for that you have done with us.And now perseuere stil to keepe fidelitie towards vs, & we wil reward you with good thinges, for that you haue done with vs.Et nunc perseverate adhuc conservare ad nos fidem, et retribuemus vobis bona pro his quæ fecistis nobiscum :
28And we will remit you many charges, and will give you many gifts.And we wil remitte you manie charges, and wil geue you manie gifts.✦et remittemus vobis præstationes multas, et dabimus vobis donationes.
29And now I release you, and all the Jews from tributes, and I pardon you the prices of salt,And now I release you, and al the Iewes from tributes, and I pardon you the prices of salt,✦Et nunc absolvo vos et omnes Judæos a tributis, et pretia salis indulgeo, et coronas remitto, et tertias seminis :
30and remit the crowns, and the thirds of the seed: and the half of the fruit of trees, which is my portion, I leave to you from this day forward, that it be not taken of the land of Juda, and of the three cities that are added thereto of Samaria, and Galilee from this day and for ever:and remitte the crownes, and the thirds of the seede: and the halfe of the fruite of trees, which is my portion, I leaue to you from this day forward, that it be not taken of the land of Iuda, and of the three cities that are added therto of Samaria, and Galilee from this day and for euer:✦et dimidiam partem fructus ligni, quod est portionis meæ, relinquo vobis ex hodierno die, et deinceps, ne accipiatur a terra Juda, et a tribus civitatibus quæ additæ sunt illi ex Samaria et Galilæa ; ex hodierna die et in totum tempus :
31and let Jerusalem be holy, and free with the coasts thereof: and the tithes, and tributes be they to it.and let Ierusalem be holie, and free with the coasts therof: and the tithes, & tributes be they to it.✦et Jerusalem sit sancta, et libera cum finibus suis : et decimæ et tributa ipsius sint.

34And all the solemn days, and the sabbaths, and the new moons, and the days appointed, and three days before the solemn day, and three days after the solemn day let them all be of immunitatis: exemption and remission,And al the solemne dayes, and the sabbaths, and the new moones, and the dayes appointed, and three dayes before the solemne day, and three dayes after the solemne day let them al be of immunitie and remission,✦Et omnes dies solemnes, et sabbata, et neomeniæ, et dies decreti, et tres dies ante diem solemnem, et tres dies post diem solemnem, sint omnes immunitatis et remissionis omnibus Judæis, qui sunt in regno meo :
35to all the Jews that are in my kingdom: and no man shall have power to do any thing, and to make businesses against any of them in any cause.to al the Iewes that are in my kingdom: and no man shal haue powre to do any thing, and to make businesses against any of them in any cause.et nemo habebit potestatem agere aliquid, et movere negotia adversus aliquem illorum in omni causa.
36And let there be enrolled of the Jews in the king's army to the number of thirty thousand men: and allowance shall be given them as behoveth to all the king's bands, and of them there shall be ordained certain,And let there be inrolled of the Iewes in the kinges armie to the number of thirtie thousand men: and allowance shal be geuen them as behoueth to al the kings bands, and of them there shal be ordayned certaine,✦Et ascribantur ex Judæis in exercitu regis ad triginta millia virorum : et dabuntur illis copiæ ut oportet omnibus exercitibus regis, et ex eis ordinabuntur qui sint in munitionibus regis magni :
37that shall be in the fortresses of the great king: and of these there shall be appointed over the affairs of the kingdom, that are done of trust, and let there be princes of them, and let them walk in their own laws, as the king hath commanded in the land of Juda.that shal be in the fortresses of the great king: and of these there shal be appoynted ouer the affayres of the kingdom, that are done of trust, and let there be princes of them, and let them walke in their owne lawes, as the king hath commanded in the land of Iuda.✦et ex his constituentur super negotia regni, quæ aguntur ex fide, et principes sint ex eis, et ambulent in legibus suis, sicut præcepit rex in terra Juda.
38And the three cities that are added to Jewry of the country of Samaria, let them be accounted with Jewry: that they may be under one, and obey no other power, but the high priests:And the three cities that are added to Iurie of the countrie of Samaria, let them be accounted with Iurie: that they may be vnder one, and obey no other powre, but the high priestes:Et tres civitates, quæ additæ sunt Judææ ex regione Samariæ, cum Judæa reputentur : ut sint sub uno, et non obediant alii potestati, nisi summi sacerdotis.
39Ptolemais, and the confines thereof, which I have given for a gift to the holies, that are in Jerusalem, to the necessary charges of the holy things.Ptolomais, and the confines therof, which I haue geuen for a gift to the holies, that are in Ierusalem, to the necessarie charges of the holie thinges.✦Ptolemaida et confines ejus, quas dedi donum sanctis qui sunt in Jerusalem, ad necessarios sumptus sanctorum.
40And I give every year fifteen thousand siclorum: shekels of silver of the king's accounts, that belong to me:And I geue euerie yeare fiftene thousand sicles of siluer of the kings accounts, that belong to me:Et ego do singulis annis quindecim millia siclorum argenti de rationibus regis, quæ me contingunt :
41and all that is above which they had not rendered, that were over the affairs the years before, from this time they shall give it to the works of the house.and al that is aboue which they had not rendred, that were ouer the affayres the yeares before, from this time they shal geue it to the workes of the house.✦et omne quod reliquum fuerit, quod non reddiderant qui super negotia erant annis prioribus, ex hoc dabunt in opera domus.
42And beside these five thousand sicles of silver, which they received of the account of the holies every year: and let these pertain to the priests, that execute the ministry.And beside these fiue thousand sicles of siluer, which they receiued of the account of the holies euerie yeare: and let these perteyne to the priests, that execute the ministerie.✦Et super hæc quinque millia siclorum argenti, quæ accipiebant de sanctorum ratione per singulos annos : et hæc ad sacerdotes pertineant, qui ministerio funguntur.
43And whosoever flee into the temple that is in Jerusalem, and in all the coasts thereof, in the king's obnoxii: liable, answerable for matter, let them be dismissed, and all things, that they have in my kingdom, let them have it free.And whosoeuer flee into the temple that is in Ierusalem, & in al the coasts therof, in the kings danger for matter, let them be dismissed, & al thinges, that they haue in my kingdom, let them haue it free.✦Et quicumque confugerint in templum quod est Jerosolymis, et in omnibus finibus ejus, obnoxii regi in omni negotio dimittantur, et universa quæ sunt eis in regno meo, libera habeant.
44And to build or repair the works of the holy places, the charges shall be given of the king's account:And to build or repayre the workes of the holie places, the charges shal be geuen of the kings account:Et ad ædificanda vel restauranda opera sanctorum, sumptus dabuntur de ratione regis :
45and to build the walls in Jerusalem, and to fortify them round about, the charges shall be given of the king's account, and to build the walls in Jewry.and to build the walles in Ierusalem, and to fortifie them round about, the charges shal be geuen of the kings account, and to build the walles in Iurie.et ad exstruendos muros Jerusalem, et communiendos in circuitu, sumptus dabuntur de ratione regis, et ad construendos muros in Judæa.
46But as Jonathas, and the people heard these words, they believed them not, nor received them: because they remembered the great malitiæ: harm, malice, that he had done in Israel, and had afflicted them exceedingly.But as Ionathas, and the people heard these wordes, * they beleued them not, nor receiued them: because they remembred the great mischife, that he had done in Israel, and had afflicted them exceedingly.Ut audivit autem Jonathas et populus sermones istos, non crediderunt eis, nec receperunt eos : quia recordati sunt malitiæ magnæ, quam fecerat in Israël, et tribulaverat eos valde.
47And their liking was toward Alexander, because he had been the first mover of the words of peace unto them, and him they aided all days.And their liking was toward Alexander, because he had bene the first mouer of the wordes of peace vnto them, and him they ayded al dayes.✦Et complacuit eis in Alexandrum, quia ipse fuerat eis princeps sermonum pacis, et ipsi auxilium ferebant omnibus diebus.

49And the two kings joined battle, and the army of Demetrius fled, and Alexander pursued him, and urged them sore.And the two kinges ioyned battel, and the armie of Demetrius fled, and Alexander pursewed him, and vrged them sore.Et commiserunt prælium duo reges, et fugit exercitus Demetrii, et insecutus est eum Alexander, et incubuit super eos.
50And the battle grew very sore, till the sun went down: and Demetrius was slain in that day.And the battel grew very sore, til the sunne went downe: and Demetrius was slaine in that day.✦Et invaluit prælium nimis, donec occidit sol : et cecidit Demetrius in die illa.

52Because I am returned into my kingdom, and am set in the seat of my fathers, and have obtained the princedom, and have destroyed Demetrius, and possessed our country,BECAVSE I am returned into my kingdom, and am set in the seate of my fathers, and haue obteyned the princedom, and haue destroyed Demetrius, and possessed our countrie,Quoniam regressus sum in regnum meum, et sedi in sede patrum meorum, et obtinui principatum, et contrivi Demetrium, et possedi regionem nostram,
53and have joined battle with him, and he is destroyed himself, and his camp by us, and we sit in the seat of his kingdom:and haue ioyned battel with him, and he is destroyed him self, & his campe by vs, and we sit in the seate of his kingdom:et commisi pugnam cum eo, et contritus est ipse et castra ejus a nobis, et sedimus in sede regni ejus :
54and now let us make amity one with another: and give me thy daughter to wife, and I will be thy son in law, and I will give thee gifts, and to her, dignity.and now let vs make amitie one with an other: and geue me thy daughter to wife, and I wil be thy sonne in law, and I wil geue thee gifts, and to her, dignitie.et nunc statuamus ad invicem amicitiam : et da mihi filiam tuam uxorem, et ego ero gener tuus, et dabo tibi dona, et ipsi, digna te.
55And king Ptolemee answered, saying: HAPPY is the day wherein thou art returned to the land of thy fathers, and art set in the seat of their kingdom.And king Ptolomee answered, saying: HAPPIE is the day wherin thou art returned to the land of thy fathers, and art set in the seate of their kingdom.Et respondit rex Ptolemæus, dicens : Felix dies, in qua reversus es ad terram patrum tuorum, et sedisti in sede regni eorum.

59And king Alexander wrote to Jonathas, that he should come to meet him.And king Alexander wrote to Ionathas, that he should come to meete him.✦Et scripsit rex Alexander Jonathæ, ut veniret obviam sibi.

62And he commanded Jonathas to be changed of his garments, and that he should be clothed with purple: and so they did. 63And he said to his princes: Go ye out with him into the midst of the city, and proclaim, that no man solicit against him for any matter, and that no man be troublesome unto him for any cause.And he sayd to his princes: Goe ye out with him into the middes of the citie, & proclame, that no man solicite against him for any matter, and that no man be trublesome vnto him for any cause.Dixitque principibus suis : Exite cum eo in medium civitatis, et prædicate, ut nemo adversus eum interpellet de ullo negotio, nec quisquam ei molestus sit de ulla ratione.

65and the king magnified him, and wrote him amongst his chief friends, and made him ducem: leader, commander, and partaker of the princedom.and the king magnified him, and wrote him amongst his chiefe freindes, and made him Duke, and partaker of the princedom.et magnificavit eum rex, et scripsit eum inter primos amicos, et posuit eum ducem, et participem principatus.

89And he sent him a chain of gold, as the custom is to be given to the cognatis: kinsmen of kings.
