25But Machabeus and they that were with him, when he approached, besought our Lord, sprinkling their head with earth, and being girded about the loins with ciliciis: sackcloth of coarse hair worn in penance,But Machabeus and they that were with him, when he approched, besought our Lord, sprinkling their head with earth, and being girded about the loynes with heareclothes,Machabæus autem et qui cum ipso erant, appropinquante illo, deprecabantur Dominum, caput terra aspergentes, lumbosque ciliciis præcincti,
26lying flat at the crepidinem: rim, top edge; base, foot, ledge of the altar, that he would be propitious to them, and an enemy to their enemies, and an adversary to their adversaries, as the law saith.lying flatte at the brimme of the altar, that he would be propicious to them, and an enemie to their enemies, and an aduersarie to their aduersaries, as the law saith.ad altaris crepidinem provoluti, ut sibi propitius, inimicis autem eorum esset inimicus, et adversariis adversaretur, sicut lex dicit.
27And so after prayer taking weapons, going forth somewhat far out of the city, and being come very near the enemies they pitched. And so after prayer taking weapons, going forth somewhat far out of the citie, and being come very neere the enemies they pitched.Et ita post orationem, sumptis armis, longius de civitate procedentes, et proximi hostibus effecti, resederunt.
28And at the very first rising of the sun both joined battle: these indeed having our Lord the sponsorem: certainty; guarantor, pledge of victory, and prosperity with virtue: but they had courage for the captain of the battle. And at the very first rising of the sunne both ioyned battel: these in deede hauing our Lord the suretie of victorie, and prosperitie with vertue: but they had courege for the captayne of the battel.Primo autem solis ortu utrique commiserunt : isti quidem victoriæ et prosperitatis sponsorem cum virtute Dominum habentes : illi autem ducem belli animum habebant.
29But when there was a sore fight, there appeared to the adversaries from heaven five men upon horses, decori: fair, graceful, seemly, adorned with golden bridles, conducting the Jews:But when there was a sore fight, there appeared to the aduersaries from heauen fiue men vpon horses, comelie with golden bridles, conducting the Iewes:✦Sed cum vehemens pugna esset, apparuerunt adversariis de cælo viri quinque in equis, frenis aureis decori, ducatum Judæis præstantes :
30of whom two having Machabeus between them, compassing him round about with their armour, kept him safe: and against the adversaries they threw darts, & fire balls, whereby both confounded with blindness, and filled with perturbatione: disturbance, confusion of mind they fell.of whom two hauing Machabeus betwen them, compassing him round about with their armour, kept him safe: and against the aduersaries they threw darts, & fire balles, wherby both confounded with blindnes, and filled with perturbation they fel.ex quibus duo Machabæum medium habentes, armis suis circumseptum incolumem conservabant : in adversarios autem tela et fulmina jaciebant, ex quo et cæcitate confusi et repleti perturbatione, cadebant.

Annotationsfrom the original 1609 Douay Old Testament
8They decreed. Beza in his Annotations ( in Joan. 10. v. 22. ) set forth in English in the year. 1603 confesseth that the feast which our Saviour observed, was instituted by Judas Machabeus, and his brethren, after the restoring of God's true religion by casting out Antiochus his garrison. It is also clear that this feast was in winter, ibidem, agreeable to the text, in the month of Casleu, which is November, whereas the feast of tabernacles was in September, before winter; and the feast of restauration of the temple after the captivity of Babylon, was in Adar ( 1. Esd. 6.) which is February, between which time and middes of March, was not competent space for those things which Christ did after this feast, before his Passion. And therefore it is very strange that Beza, or other Protestants will deny these books to be Canonical: which have so excellent a testimony by the Evangelist of our Saviour's own fact. They decreed.
