Lysias supposing with his army of fourscore thousand footmen, and a great band of horsemen to subdue Jerusalem: 6. Judas with his few praying God, and going to fight, an Angel, in form of an horseman, goeth before them: 10. so they setting upon the enemies kill many, and the rest flee. 13. Lysias perceiving God's power, offereth to procure peace. 22. Whereto the king agreeth, writing to him, 27. and to the Jews. 34. The Romans also write to the Jews.Lysias supposing with his armie of fourescore thousand footemen, & a great band of horsemen to subdue Ierusalem: 6. Iudas with his few praying God, and going to fight, an Angel, in forme of an horsemen, goeth before them: 10. so they setting vpon the enemies kil manie, & the rest flee. 13. Lysias perceiuing Gods powre, offereth to procure peace. 22. Wherto the king, agreeth, writting to him, 27. and to the Iewes. 34. The Romanes also write to the Iewes.

But a little after Lysias the king's procurator: deputy governor, steward, and propinquus: an uncle's or aunt's child; a kinsman, a blood-relative, and chief over the affairs, being greatly offended with these things, that had happened,BVt a litle after Lysias the kings procuratour, and cosin, and chiefe ouer the affayers, being greatly offended with these thinges, that had hapened,Sed parvo post tempore, Lysias procurator regis et propinquus, ac negotiorum præpositus, graviter ferens de his quæ acciderant,

having gathered fourscore thousand, and all the horsemen, came against the Jews, thinking that taking the city, he should make it an habitation for the Gentiles:hauing gathered foure score thousand, and al the horsemen, came againt the Iewes, thincking that taking the citie, he should make it an habitation for the Gentiles:congregatis octoginta millibus, et equitatu universo, veniebat adversus Judæos, existimans se civitatem quidem captam gentibus habitaculum facturum,

and he should have the temple to make gain of money, as the rest of the temples of the Gentiles, and every year the priesthood to be sold:and he should haue the temple to make gayne of money, as the rest of the temples of the Gentiles, and euerie yeare the priesthood to be sold:templum vero in pecuniæ quæstum, sicut cetera delubra gentium, habiturum, et per singulos annos venale sacerdotium :

never recounting the power of God, but furious in mind, he trusted in the multitude of foot men, and thousands of horsemen, and in fourscore elephants.neuer recounting the powre of God, but furious in minde, he trusted in the multitude of foote men, and thousandes of horsemen, and in foure score elephants.nusquam recogitans Dei potestatem, sed mente effrenatus in multitudine peditum, et in millibus equitum, et in octoginta elephantis confidebat.

And he entered into Jewry, and approaching to Bethsura, which was in a narrow place from Jerusalem the space of five furlongs, he expugnabat: took by assault, stormed that hold. And he entred into Iurie, and approching to Beth-sura, which was in a narrow place from Ierusalem the space of fiue furlongs, he expugned that hold.

But as Machabeus, and they that were with him, understood that the holds were expugned, they besought our Lord with weeping and tears, and all the multitude together, that he would send a good Angel to the saving of Israel. But as Machabeus, and they that were with him, vnderstood that the holdes were expugned, they besought our Lord with weeping and teares, and al the multitude together, that he would send a good Angel to the sauing of Israel.

And Machabeus himself first taking weapons, exhorted the rest together with him, to adventure, and to give aid to their brethren. And Machabeus him self first taking weapons, exhorted the rest together with him, to aduenture, and to geue ayde to their bretheren.

And when they went forth together with prompt courage, at Jerusalem there appeared going before them an horseman in white clothing, with armour of gold, shaking a spear. And when they went forth together with prompt corege, at Ierusalem there appeared going before them an horseman in white clothing, with armour of gold, shaking a speare.Cumque pariter prompto animo procederent, Jerosolymis apparuit præcedens eos eques in veste candida, armis aureis hastam vibrans.

Then all they together blessed our merciful Lord, and took great courage: being ready to penetrate not only men, but also most fierce beasts, and walls of iron. Then al they together blessed our merciful Lord, and tooke great corege: being readie to penetrate not only men, but also most fierce beastes, and walles of yron.

They went therefore promptly, having an helper from heaven, and our Lord having pity upon them. They went therfore promptly, hauing an helper from heauen, and our Lord hauing pitie vpon them.

And like lions running violently upon the enemies, they overthrew of them eleven thousand footmen, and of horsemen a thousand six hundred:And like lyons running violently vpon the enimies, they ouerthrew of them eleuen thousand footmen, and of horsemen a thousand six hundred:Leonum autem more impetu irruentes in hostes, prostraverunt ex eis undecim millia peditum, et equitum mille sexcentos :

and they put to flight all, and very many of them being wounded scaped away naked. Yea and Lysias himself shamefully fleeing escaped.and they put to flight al, & very many of them being wounded scaped away naked. Yea and Lysias him selfe shamefully fleeing escaped.universos autem in fugam verterunt, plures autem ex eis vulnerati nudi evaserunt. Sed et ipse Lysias turpiter fugiens evasit.

And because he was not senseless recounting with himself, the diminutionem: the loss or defeat suffered made on his side, and understanding the Hebrews to be invincible, because they rested upon the help of the almighty God, he sent unto them:And because he was not senselesse recounting with him selfe, the diminution made on his side, and vnderstanding the Hebrewes to be inuincible, because they rested vpon the helpe of the almightie God, he sent vnto them:Et quia non insensatus erat, secum ipse reputans factam erga se diminutionem, et intelligens invictos esse Hebræos, omnipotentis Dei auxilio innitentes, misit ad eos :

and promised that he would consent to all things, that are just, and that he would force the king to be their friend.and promised that he would consent to al thinges, that are iust, and that he would force the king to be their freind.promisitque se consensurum omnibus quæ justa sunt, et regem compulsurum amicum fieri.

And Machabeus granted to Lysias requests, in all things having respect to the commonwealth and whatsoever Machabeus wrote to Lysias, concerning the Jews, the king granted it.And Machabeus granted to Lysias requestes, in al things hauing respect to the commonwealth and whatsoeuer Machabeus wrote to Lysias, concerning the Iewes, the king granted it.Annuit autem Machabæus precibus Lysiæ, in omnibus utilitati consulens : et quæcumque Machabæus scripsit Lysiæ de Judæis, ea rex concessit.

For there were epistles written to the Jews from Lysias, containing this modum: a holding of land or office; the tenor, purport: Lysias to the people of the Jews health. For there were epistles written to the Iewes from Lysias, conteyning this tenure: LYSIAS to the people of the Iewes health.Nam erant scriptæ Judæis epistolæ a Lysia quidem hunc modum continentes : Lysias populo Judæorum salutem.

John and Absalom that were sent from you, delivering the writings, requested that I would accomplish those things which by them were signified.Iohn and Absalom that were sent from you, deliuering the wrytings, requested that I would accomplishe those thinges which by them were signified.

Therefore whatsoever might be brought to the king I declared unto him: and that which the matters permitted I granted.Therfore whatsoeuer might be brought to the king I declared vnto him: and that which the matters permitted I granted.Quæcumque igitur regi potuerunt perferri, exposui : et quæ res permittebat, concessit.

If therefore you keep fidelity in the affairs and henceforward, also will endeavour to be a cause of doing you good.If therfore you kepe fideletie in the affayres & henceforward, also wil endeuour to be a cause of doing you good.

And concerning the rest, word for word I have given commandment both to these, and to them that are sent of me, to commune with you.And concerning the rest, word for word I haue geuen commandement both to theise, and to them that are sent of me, to commune with you.De ceteris autem per singula verbo mandavi et istis, et his, qui a me missi sunt, colloqui vobiscum.

Fare ye well. In the year an hundred forty eight, of the month Dioscorus the four and twentieth day.Fare ye wel. In the yeare an hundred fourtie eight, of the moneth Dioscorus the foure & twenteth day.Bene valete. Anno centesimo, quadragesimo octavo mensis Dioscori, die vigesima et quarta.

But the king's epistle contained these things: King Antiochus to Lysias his brother, health. But the kings epistle conteyned these thinges: King Antiochus to Lysias his brother, health.Regis autem epistola ista continebat : Rex Antiochus Lysiæ fratri salutem.

Our father being translato: rendered into another tongue; removed, taken away (here, deified at death) amongst the gods, we being willing that they that are in our kingdom should live without trouble, and employ diligence to their own matters,Our father being translated amongst the goddes, we being willing that they that are in our kingdome should liue without truble, and employ diligence to their owne matters,Patre nostro inter deos translato, nos volentes eos qui sunt in regno nostro sine tumultu agere, et rebus suis adhibere diligentiam,

we have heard that the Jews consented not to my father to turn to the rite of the Greeks, but that they would keep their own institutum: an established custom, ordinance, and therefore that they request us their rites to be granted them.we haue heard that the Iewes consented not to my father to turne to the rite of the Greekes, but that they would keepe their owne institution, and therfore that they request vs their rites to be granted them.audivimus Judæos non consensisse patri meo ut transferrentur ad ritum Græcorum, sed tenere velle suum institutum, ac propterea postulare a nobis concedi sibi legitima sua.

Being therefore desirous that this nation also be quiet, ordaining we have decreed, that the temple be restored unto them, that they might do according to the custom of their ancestors.Being therfore desirouse that this nation also be quiet, oradyning we haue decreed, that the temple be restored vnto them, that they might doe according to the custome of their ancestours.Volentes igitur hanc quoque gentem quietam esse, statuentes judicavimus templum restitui illis, ut agerent secundum suorum majorum consuetudinem.

Thou shalt do well therefore if thou send to them, and give the right hand, that our pleasure being known they may be of good cheer, and look to their own utilitatibus: goods for sale; advantages, interests.Thou shalt do wel therfore if thou send to them, & geue the right hand, that our pleasure being knowen they may be of good cheere, & looke to their owne commodities.

But to the Jews the king's epistle was in this manner: King Antiochus to the senate of the Jews, and to the rest of the Jews health. But to the Iewes the kings epistle was in this manner: KING Antiochus to the senate of the Iewes, and to the rest of the Iewes health.Ad Judæos vero regis epistola talis erat : Rex Antiochus senatui Judæorum, et ceteris Judæis salutem.

If you fare well, you are so as we would: yea our selves also fare well.If you fare wel, you are so as we would: yea our selues also fare wel.

Menelaus came to us, saying that you would come down to your country men, that are with us.Menelaus came to vs, saying that you would come downe to your countrie men, that are with vs.Adiit nos Menelaus, dicens velle vos descendere ad vestros, qui sunt apud nos.

To them therefore that come and go, until the thirtieth day of the month Xanthicus, we give the right hands of security,To them therfore that come and goe, vntil the thirtith day of the month Xanthicus, we geue the right handes of securitie,His igitur qui commeant usque ad diem trigesimum mensis Xanthici, damus dextras securitatis,

that the Jews may use their own meats, and their own laws, as also before: and that none of them by any means suffer molestation for these things, which have been done by ignorance.that the Iewes may vse their owne meates, and their owne lawes, as also before: and that none of them by any meanes suffer molestation for these thinges, which haue bene done by ignorance.ut Judæi utantur cibis et legibus suis, sicut et prius : et nemo eorum ullo modo molestiam patiatur de his quæ per ignorantiam gesta sunt.

And we have sent also Menelaus to speak to you.And we haue sent also Menelaus to speake to you.Misimus autem et Menelaum, qui vos alloquatur.

Fare ye well. In the year an hundred forty eight, of the month Xanthicus the fifteenth day.Fare ye wel. In the yeare an hundred fortie eight, of the moneth Xanthicus the fiftenth day.Valete. Anno centesimo quadragesimo octavo, Xanthici mensis quintadecima die.

And the Romans also sent an epistle, which is thus: Quintus Memmius, and Titus Manilius legati: ambassadors, envoys of the Romans, to the people of the Jews health. And the Romans also sent an epistle, which is thus: QVINTVS Memmius, and Titus Manilius legats of the Romans, to the people of the Iewes health.

Concerning these things which Lysias the king's cousin hath granted you, we also have granted.Concerning these thinges which Lysias the kings cosin hath granted you, we also haue granted.De his quæ Lysias cognatus regis concessit vobis, et nos concessimus.

But touching the things which he thought good to be referred to the king, send ye forthwith some body, conferring diligently among your selves, that we may decree as is congruit: handy; fitting, suitable for you: for we go to Antioch. But touching the thinges which he thought good to be referred to the king, send ye forthwith some bodie, conferring diligently among your selues, that we may decree as is conuenient for you: for we goe to Antioch.

And therefore make haste to write again, that we also may know of what mind you are.And therfore make hast to write agayne, that we also may know of what minde you are.Ideoque festinate rescribere, ut nos quoque sciamus cujus estis voluntatis.

Fare ye well. In the year an hundred forty eight the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.Fate ye wel. In the yeare an hundred fourtie eight the fiftenth day of the moneth Xanthicus.Bene valete. Anno centesimo quadragesimo octavo, quintadecima die mensis Xanthici.
