After which things, and this manner of truth, came Sennacherib the king of the Assyrians, and entering into Juda, besieged the munitas: enclosed by a fence; fortified cities, desirous to take them.AFTER which thinges, and this maner of truth, came Sennacherib the king of the Assyrians, and entering into Iuda, besieged the fensed cities, desirous to take them.✦Post quæ et hujuscemodi veritatem, venit Sennacherib rex Assyriorum, et ingressus Judam, obsedit civitates munitas, volens eas capere.
Which when Ezechias had seen, to wit, that Sennacherib was come, and the whole force of the battle to be turned against Jerusalem,Which when Ezechias had sene, to witte, that Sennacherib was come, and the whole force of the battel to be turned agaynst Ierusalem,Quod cum vidisset Ezechias, venisse scilicet Sennacherib, et totum belli impetum verti contra Jerusalem,
taking counsel with the princes, and the most valiant men, to stop up the heads of the fountains, that were without the city: and the sentence of them all decreeing this, taking counsel with the princes, and the most valiant men, to stoppe vp the heades of the fountaynes, that were without the citie: and the sentence of them al decreing this, inito cum principibus consilio, virisque fortissimis, ut obturarent capita fontium qui erant extra urbem : et hoc omnium decernente sententia,
he gathered a very great multitude, and they stopped up all the fountains, and the river, that ran in the midst of the land, saying: Lest the kings of the Assyrians come, and find abundance of waters.he gathered a very great multitude, & they stopped vp al the fountaynes, and the riuer, that ranne in the middes of the land, saying: Lest the kinges of the Assyrians come, and finde abundance of waters.✦congregavit plurimam multitudinem, et obturaverunt cunctos fontes, et rivum qui fluebat in medio terræ, dicentes : Ne veniant reges Assyriorum, et inveniant aquarum abundantiam.
He built also doing industriously every wall that had been destroyed, and built towers upon them, and another wall without: and he repaired Mello in the city of David, and made armour and shields of all sorts:He built also doing industriously euerie wall that had bene destroyed, and built towers vpon them, and an other wall without: and he repayred Mello in the citie of Dauid, and made armour and shildes of al sortes:Ædificavit quoque, agens industrie, omnem murum qui fuerat dissipatus, et exstruxit turres desuper, et forinsecus alterum murum : instauravitque Mello in civitate David, et fecit universi generis armaturam et clypeos :
And he appointed princes of warriors in the army: and he called them all together in the street of the gate of the city, and spake to their heart, saying:And he appointed princes of warryers in the armie: and he called them al together in the streate of the gate of the citie, and spake to their hart, saying:constituitque principes bellatorum in exercitu, et convocavit universos in platea portæ civitatis, ac locutus est ad cor eorum, dicens :
Do manfully, and take courage: fear not, neither dread ye the king of the Assyrians, and all the multitude, that is with him: for there are many more with us, then with him.Doe manfully, and take courage: feare not, neither dread ye the king of the Assyrians, and al the multitude, that is with him: for there are manie moe with vs, then with him.
For with him is an arm of flesh: with us the Lord our God, which is our helper, and fighteth for us. And the people was encouraged with these manner of words of Ezechias the king of Juda. For with him is an arme of flesh: with vs the Lord our God, which is our helper, and fighteth for vs. And the people was encouraged with these maner of wordes of Ezechias the king of Iuda.
Which things after they were done, Sennacherib the king of the Assyrians sent his servants to Jerusalem (for himself with all his army besieged Lachis) to Ezechias the king of Juda, and to all the people, that was in the city, saying:Which thinges after they were done, Sennacherib the king of the Assyrians sent his seruantes to Ierusalem (for himself with al his armie beseiged Lachis) to Ezechias the king of Iuda, & to al the people, that was in the citie, saying:Quæ postquam gesta sunt, misit Sennacherib rex Assyriorum servos suos in Jerusalem (ipse enim cum universo exercitu obsidebat Lachis) ad Ezechiam regem Juda, et ad omnem populum qui erat in urbe, dicens :
Thus saith Sennacherib the king of the Assyrians: In whom having fiducia: betrothal; trust, confidence, do you sit besieged in Jerusalem? Thus sayth Sennacherib the king of the Assyrians: In whom hauing affiance, doe you sitte besieged in Ierusalem?Hæc dicit Sennacherib rex Assyriorum : In quo habentes fiduciam sedetis obsessi in Jerusalem ?
Hath Ezechias deceived you, to deliver you to death in hunger and thirst, affirming that the Lord your God can deliver you from the hand of the king of the Assyrians?Hath Ezechias deceiued you, to deliuer you to death in hunger and thirst, affirming that the Lord your God can deliuer you from the hand of the king of the Assyrians?num Ezechias decipit vos, ut tradat morti in fame et siti, affirmans quod Dominus Deus vester liberet vos de manu regis Assyriorum ?
Why, is not this Ezechias, that hath destroyed his excelsa: lofty things; high places of idol-worship, and altars, and hath commanded Juda and Jerusalem, saying: Before one altar you shall adore, and on it you shall burn incense? Why, is not this Ezechias, that hath destroyed his excelses, and altars, and hath commanded Iuda & Ierusalem, saying: Before one altar you shal adore, and on it you shal burne incense?
Are you ignorant what things I have done, and my fathers to all the peoples of the lands? have the gods of nations, and of all lands been able to deliver their country out of my hand? Are you ignorant what thinges I haue done, and my fathers to al the peoples of the landes? haue the goddes of nations, and of al landes bene able to deliuer their countrie out of my hand?an ignoratis quæ ego fecerim, et patres mei, cunctis terrarum populis ? numquid prævaluerunt dii gentium, omniumque terrarum, liberare regionem suam de manu mea ?
Who is there of all the gods of the nations, which my fathers wasted, that could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God also can deliver you out of this hand?Who is there of al the goddes of the nations, which my fathers wasted, that could deliuer his people out of my hand, that your God also can deliuer you out of this hand?
Let not therefore Ezechias deceive you, nor delude you with vain persuasion, neither believe ye him. For if no god of all nations and kingdoms, could deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers, consequently neither shall your God be able to deliver you out of my hand.Let not therfore Ezechias deceiue you, nor delude you with vayne persuasion, neither beleue ye him. For if no god of al nations and kingdomes, could deliuer his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers, consequently neither shal your God be able to deliuer you out of my hand.non vos ergo decipiat Ezechias, nec vana persuasione deludat, neque credatis ei.
Yea and many other things did his servants speak, against our Lord God, and against Ezechias his servant.Yea and manie other thinges did his seruantes speake, agaynst our Lord God, and agaynst Ezechias his seruant.
Letters also he wrote full of blasphemy against our Lord the God of Israel, and he spake against him: as the gods of their nations could not deliver their people out of my hand, so the God also of Ezechias can not deliver his people out of this hand.Letters also he wrote ful of blasphemie against our Lord the God of Israel, and he spake agaynst him: as the goddes of their nations could not deliuer their people out of my hand, so the God also of Ezechias can not deliuer his people out of this hand.
Moreover also with a loud cry, in the Jews tongue, he sounded against the people, that sat on the walls of Jerusalem, that he might terrify them, and take the city.Moreouer also with a lowd crie, in the Iewes tongue, he sounded against the people, that sate on the walles of Ierusalem, that he might terrifie them, and take the citie.
And he spake against the God of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the peoples of the earth, the works of men's hands. And he spake agaynst the God of Ierusalem, as agaynst the goddes of the peoples of the earth, the workes of mens handes.Locutusque est contra Deum Jerusalem, sicut adversum deos populorum terræ, opera manuum hominum.
Ezechias therefore the king, and Isaias the prophet the son of Amos, prayed against this blasphemy, and cried out even to heaven.Ezechias therfore the king, and Isaias the prophet the sonne of Amos, prayed agaynst this blasphemie, and cried out euen to heauen.
And our Lord sent an Angel, which stroke every strong man, and warrior, and prince of the army of the king of the Assyrians: and he returned with ignominy into his country. And when he was entered into the house of his God, his sons that were come forth of his womb, slew him with the sword. And our Lord sent an Angel, which stroke euerie strong man, and warryer, and prince of the armie of the king of the Assyrians: and he returned with ignominie into his countrie. And when he was entered into the house of his God, his sonnes that were come forth of his wombe, slewe him with the sword.✦Et misit Dominus angelum, qui percussit omnem virum robustum, et bellatorem, et principem exercitus regis Assyriorum : reversusque est cum ignominia in terram suam. Cumque ingressus esset domum dei sui, filii qui egressi fuerant de utero ejus interfecerunt eum gladio.
And our Lord saved Ezechias and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of the hand of Sennacherib the king of the Assyrians, and out of the hand of all, and gave them rest round about. And our Lord saued Ezechias and the inhabitantes of Ierusalem, out of the hand of Sennacherib the king of the Assyrians, and out of the hand of al, & gaue them rest round about.
Many also brought hosts, and sacrifices to our Lord into Jerusalem, and gifts to Ezechias the king of Juda: who was exalted after these things before all nations.Manie also brought hostes, and sacrifices to our Lord into Ierusalem, and giftes to Ezechias the king of Iuda: who was exalted after these thinges before al nations.
In those days Ezechias was sick even to death, and he prayed our Lord: and he heard him, and gave him a sign.In those daies Ezechias was sick euen to death, and he prayed our Lord: and he heard him, and gaue him a signe.
But not according to the benefits, which he received, did he recompense, because his heart was elevated: and wrath came against him, and against Juda and Jerusalem. But not according to the benefites, which he receiued, did he recompense, because his hart was eleuated: and wrath came agaynst him, and agaynst Iuda and Ierusalem.
And he was humbled afterward, because his heart had been exalted, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and therefore the wrath of our Lord came not upon them in the days of Ezechias. And he was humbled afterward, because his hart had bene exalted, both he and the inhabitantes of Ierusalem: and therfore the wrath of our Lord came not vpon them in the daies of Ezechias.
And Ezechias was rich, and glorious exceedingly and gathered to himself great treasures of silver and of gold, and of precious stone, of spices, and of armour of all kind, and of vessels of great price. And Ezechias was rich, and glorious excedingly and gathered to himself great treasures of siluer and of gold, and of pretious stone, of spices, and of armour of al kinde, and of vessels of great price.
Storehouses also of corn, of wine, and of oil, and stalls of all beasts, and folds of cattle,Storehouses also of corne, of wyne, and of oyle, and stalles of al beastes, and foldes of cattel,Apothecas quoque frumenti, vini, et olei, et præsepia omnium jumentorum, caulasque pecorum,
and six cities he built to himself: for he had flocks of sheep, and of herds innumerable, because our Lord had given him substance exceeding much.and six cities he built to him self: for he had flockes of sheepe, and of heardes innumerable, because our Lord had geuen him substance exceding much.et urbes ædificavit sibi : habebat quippe greges ovium et armentorum innumerabiles, eo quod dedisset ei Dominus substantiam multam nimis.
The same is Ezechias, that stopped the upper fountain of the waters of Gihon, and turned them away underneath toward the West of the City of David: in all his works he did prosperously what he would. The same is Ezechias, that stopped the vpper fountaine of the waters of Gihon, and turned them away vnderneth toward the West of the Citie of Dauid: in al his workes he did prosperously what he would.
But yet in the embassy of the princes of Babylon, that were sent to him, to ask of the wonder, that had chanced upon the earth, God left him that he might be tempted, and all things might be made known, that were in his heart. But yet in the embassie of the princes of Babylon, that were sent to him, to aske of the wonder, that had chanced vpon the earth, God leift him that he might be tempted, and al thinges might be made knowen, that were in his hart.✦Attamen in legatione principum Babylonis, qui missi fuerant ad eum ut interrogarent de portento quod acciderat super terram, dereliquit eum Deus ut tentaretur, et nota fierent omnia quæ erant in corde ejus.
But the rest of the words of Ezechias, and of his mercies are written in the vision of Isaias the son of Amos the prophet, and in the book of the kings of Juda and Israel. But the rest of the wordes of Ezechias, and of his mercies are writen in the vision of Isaias the sonne of Amos the prophete, and in the booke of the kinges of Iuda & Israel.
And Ezechias slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the chief sepulchres of the children of David: and all Juda celebrated his funerals, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and Manasses his son reigned for him.And Ezechias slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the chiefe sepulchres of the children of Dauid: and al Iuda celebrated his funeralles, & al the inhabitantes of Ierusalem: and Manasses his sonne reigned for him.
