All are admonished, that extreme calamities shall fall upon this world, 36. the penitent returning to justice shall escape, 55. and as all things were made by God's omnipotent power at his will, so all things shall serve to the reward of the blessed, and punishment of the wicked.Al are admonished, that extreme calamities shal fal vpon this world, 36. the penitent returning to iustice shal escape, 55. & as al thinges were made by Gods omnipotent powre at his wil, so al thinges shal serue to the reward of the blessed, and punishment of the wicked.

Woe to thee Babylon and Asia, woe to thee Egypt, and Syria.WOE to thee Babylon & Asia, woe to thee Ægypt, and Syria.Væ tibi Babylon et Asia, væ tibi Ægypte et Syria.

2Gird yourselves with sackcloths and shirts of hair, and mourn for your children, and be sorry: because your destruction is at hand.Gird yourselues with sackclothes and shirtes of heare, & mourne for your children, & be sorie : because your destruction is at hand.Præcingite vos saccis et ciliciis, et plangite filios vestros, et dolete : quoniam appropinquavit contritio vestra.

3The sword is sent in upon you, and who is he that can turn it away?The sword is sent in vpon you, and who is he that can turne it away?Immissus est vobis gladius, et quis est qui avertat illum ?

4Fire is sent in upon you, and who is he that can quench it?Fire is sent in vpon you, and who is he that can quench it?Immissus est in vobis ignis, et quis est qui extinguat illum ?

5Evils are sent in upon you, and who is he that can repel them?Euiles are sent in vpon you, and who is he that can repel them?Immissa sunt vobis mala, et quis est qui repellat ea ?

6Shall any man repel the lion being hungry in the wood, or quench the fire in stubble, forthwith when it beginneth to burn?Shal anie man repel the lion being hungrie in the woode, or quench the fire in stubble, forthwith when it beginneth to burne?Numquid repellet aliquis leonem esurientem in silva, aut extinguet ignem in stipula, mox quando cœperit ardere ?

7Shall any man repel the arrow shot of a strong archer?Shal anie man repel the arrow shot of a strong archer?Numquid repellet aliquis sagittam a sagittario forti missam ?

8Our strong Lord sendeth in evils, and who is he that can repel them?Our strong Lord sendeth in euiles, and who is he that can repel them?Dominus fortis immittit mala, et quis est qui repellat ea ?

9Fire came forth from his wrath, and who is he that can quench it?Fire came forth from his wrath, and who is he that can quench it?Exiit ignis ex iracundia ejus, et quis est qui extinguat eum ?

10He will lighten, who shall not fear, he will thunder, and who shall not be afraid?He wil lighten, who shal not feare, he wil thunder, and who shal not be afrayde?Coruscabit, et quis non timebit ? Tonabit, et quis non pavebit ?

11Our Lord will threaten, and who shall not utterly be destroyed before his face?Our Lord wil threaten, and who shal not vtterly be destroyed before his face?Dominus comminabitur, et quis non funditus conteretur a facie ipsius ?

12The earth hath trembled, and the foundations thereof, the sea tosseth up waves from the depth, and the floods of it shall be destroyed, and the fishes thereof at the face of our Lord, and at the glory of his power:The earth hath trembled, and the fundations thereof, the sea tosseth vp waues from the depth, and the floudes of it shal be destroyed, and the fishes thereof at the face of our Lord, and at the glorie of his powre :Terra tremuit et fundamenta ejus, mare fluctuat de profundo, et fluctus ejus disturbabuntur, et pisces ejus a facie Domini, et a gloria virtutis ejus :

13because his right hand is strong which bendeth the bow, his arrows be sharp that are shot of him, they shall not miss, when they shall begin to be shot into the ends of the earth.because his right hand is strong which bendeth the bow, his arrowes be sharpe that are shot of him, they shal not misse, when they shal begine to be shot into the endes of the earth.quoniam fortis dextera ejus quæ arcum tendit : sagittæ ejus acutæ quæ ab ipso mittuntur, non deficient, cum cœperint mitti in fines terræ.

14Behold evils are sent, and they shall not return till they come upon the earth.Behold euiles are sent, and they shal not returne til they come vpon the earth.Ecce mittuntur mala, et non revertentur donec veniant super terram.

15The fire is kindled and it shall not be quenched, till it consume the foundations of the earth.The fire is kindled and it shal not be quenched, til it consume the fundations of the earth.Ignis succenditur, et non extinguetur, donec consumat fundamenta terræ.

16For as the arrow shot of a strong archer returneth not, so shall not the evils return back, that shall be sent upon the earth.For as the arrow shot of a strong archer returneth not, so shal not the euils returne backe, that shal be sent vpon the earth.Quemadmodum non redit sagitta missa a valido sagittario, sic non revertentur mala quæ missa fuerint in terram.

17Woe is me, woe is me: who shall deliver me in those days?Woe is me, woe is me : who shal deliuer me in those dayes?Væ mihi væ mihi : quis me liberabit in illis diebus ?

18The beginning of sorrows and much mourning, the beginning of famine and much destruction. The beginning of wars and the potestatespotestates: the potentates, the ruling powers shall fear, the beginning of evils and all shall tremble.The beginning of sorrowes and much mourning, the beginning of famine and much destruction. The beginning of warres and the potestates shal feare, the beginning of euiles and al shal tremble.Initium dolorum et multi gemitus, initium famis et multi interitus, initium bellorum et formidabunt potestates, initium malorum et trepidabunt omnes.

19In these what shall I do, when the evils shall come?In these what shal I doe, when the euiles shal come?In his quid faciam, cum venerint mala ?

20Behold famine, and plague, and tribulation, and distress are sent all as scourges for amendment,Behold famine, and plague, and tribulation, and distresse are sent al as scourges for amendment,Ecce fames et plaga, et tribulatio, et angustia missa sunt flagella in emendatione,

21and in all these they will not convert themselves from their iniquities, neither will they be always mindful of the scourges.and in al these they wil not conuert themselues from their iniquities, neither wil they be alwayes mindful of the scourges.et in his omnibus se non convertent ab iniquitatibus suis, neque flagellorum memores erunt semper.

22Behold, there shall be good cheapannonæ vilitas: cheapness of provisions, low prices victuals upon the earth, so that they may think that peace is directly coming toward them, and then shall evils spring upon the earth, sword, famine, and great confusion.Behold, there shal be good cheape victuals vpon the earth, so that they may thinke that peace is directly coming toward them, and then shal euiles spring vpon the earth, sword, famine, and great confusion.Ecce, erit annonæ vilitas super terram, sic ut putent sibi esse directam pacem, et tunc germinabunt mala super terram, gladius, fames, et magna confusio.

23For by famine many that inhabit the earth shall die, and the sword shall destroy the rest that remained alive of the famine,For by famine manie that inhabit the earth shal dye, and the sword shal destroy the rest that remained aliue of the famine,A fame enim plurimi qui inhabitant terram interient, et gladius perdet ceteros qui superaverint a fame,

24and the dead shall be cast forth as dung, and there shall be none to comfort them. For the earth shall be left desert, and the cities thereof shall be thrown down.and the dead shal be cast forth as dung, and there shal be none to comfort them. For the earth shal be left desert, and the cities therof shal be throwen downe.et mortui sicut stercora projicientur, et non erit qui consoletur eos. Derelinquetur enim terra deserta, et civitates ejus dejicientur.

25There shall not be left a man to till the ground and to sow it.There shal not be left a man to til the ground and to sow it.Non derelinquetur qui colat terram, et qui seminet eam.

26The trees shall yield fruits, and who shall gather them?The trees shal yeeld fruites, and who shal gather them?Ligna dabunt fructus, et quis vindemiabit illa ?

27The grape shall become ripe, and who shall tread it? For there shall be great desolation to places.The grape shal become ripe, & who shal tread it? For there shal be great desolation to places.Uva matura fiet, et quis calcabit illam ? erit enim locis magna desertio.

28For a man shall desire to see a man, or to hear his voice.For a man shal desire to see a man, or to heare his voyce.Cupiet enim homo hominem videre, vel vocem ejus audire.

29For there shall be left ten of a city, and two of the field that have hid themselves in thick woods, and cliffs of rocks.For there shal be leaft ten of a citie, and two of the filde that haue hid themselues in thicke woodes, and cliffes of rockes.Relinquentur enim de civitate decem, et duo de agro qui absconderint se in densis nemoribus, et scissuris petrarum :

30As there are left in the olivet, and on every tree, three or four olives.As there are left in the oliuet, and on euerie tree, three or foure oliues.quemadmodum derelinquuntur in oliveto et singulis arboribus tres aut quattuor olivæ.

31Or as in a vineyard when it is gathered there are grapes left by them, that diligently search the vineyard:Or as in a vinyeard when it is gathered there are grapes left by them, that diligently search the vineyard :Aut sicut in vinea vindemiata racemi relinquuntur ab his qui diligenter vineam scrutantur :

32so shall there be left in those days three or four, by them that search their houses in the sword.so shal there be left in those dayes three or foure, by them that search their houses in the sword.sic relinquentur in diebus illis tres aut quattuor ab scrutantibus domos eorum in romphæa.

33And the earth shall be left desolate, and the fields thereof shall wax old, and the ways thereof, and all the paths thereof shall bring forth thorns, because no man shall pass by it.And the earth shal be left desolate, and the fildes thereof shal waxe old, & the wayes thereof, and al the pathes thereof shal bringforth thornes, because no man shal passe by it.Et relinquetur terra deserta, et agri ejus inveterabunt, et viæ ejus, et omnes semitæ ejus germinabunt spinas, eo quòd non transient homines per eam.

34Virgins shall mourn having no bridegrooms, women shall mourn having no husbands, their daughters shall mourn having no help:Virgins shal mourne hauing no bridegromes, wemen shal mourne hauing no husbandes, their daughters shal mourne hauing no helpe :Lugebunt virgines non habentes sponsos, lugebunt mulieres non habentes viros, lugebunt filiæ earum non habentes adiutorium :

35their bridegrooms shall be consumed in battle, and their husbands be destroyed in famine.their bridegromes shal be consumed in battel, and their husbandes be destroyed in famine.sponsi earum in bello consumentur, et viri earum in fame exterentur.

36But hear these things, and know them ye servants of our Lord.But heare these thinges, and know them ye seruantes of our Lord.Audite vero ista, et cognoscite ea servi Domini.

37Behold the word of our Lord, receive it: believe not the gods of whom our Lord speaketh.Behold the word of our Lord, receiue it : beleue not the goddes of whom our Lord speaketh.Ecce verbum Domini, excipite illud : ne diis credatis de quibus dicit Dominus.

38Behold the evils approach, and slacktardare: delay, tarry not.Behold the euiles approch, and slacke not.Ecce appropinquant mala, et non tardant.

39As a woman with child when she bringeth forth her child in the ninth month, the hour of her deliverance approaching, two or three hours before, pains come about her womb, and the infants coming out of her womb, they will not tarry one moment.As a woman with childe when shee bringeth forth her child in the ninth moneth, the houre of her deliuerance approching, two or three howres before, paines come about her wombe, and the infants coming out of her wombe, they wil not tarrie one moment.Quemadmodum prægnans cum parit in nono mense filium suum, appropinquante hora partus ejus ante horas duas vel tres, dolores circumeunt ventrem ejus, et prodeunte infante de ventre non tardabunt uno puncto :

40So the evils shall not slack to come forth upon the earth, and the world shall lament, and sorrows shall hold it round about.So the euiles shal not slacke to come forth vpon the earth, and the world shal lament, and sorowes shal hold it round about.sic non morabuntur mala ad prodeundum super terram, et sæculum gemet, et dolores circumtenebunt illud.

41Hear the word, my people: prepare yourselves unto the fight, and in the evils so be ye as strangers of the earth.Heare the word, my people : prepare yourselues vnto the fight, & in the euiles so be ye as strangers of the earth.Audite verbum, plebs mea : parate vos in pugnam, et in malis sic estote, quasi advenæ terræ.

42He that selleth as if he should flee, and he that buyeth as he that should lose it.He that selleth as if he should flee, and he that byeth as he that should lose it.Qui vendit, quasi qui fugiat : et qui emit, quasi qui perditurus.

43He that playeth the merchant, as he that should take no fruit: and he that buildeth as he that should not inhabit.He that playeth the marchant, as he that should take no fruite : and he that buildeth as he that should not inhabite.Qui mercatur, quasi qui fructum non capiat : et qui ædificat, quasi non habitaturus.

44He that soweth, as he that shall not reap: so he also that pruneth a vineyard, as if he should not have the vintage.He that soweth, as he that shal not reape : so he also that pruneth a vinyeard, as if he should not haue the vintage.Qui seminat, quasi qui non metet : sic et qui vineam putat, quasi non vindemiaturus.

45They that marry so as if they should not get children, and they that marry not, so as it were widows.They that marie so as if they should not get children, & they that marie not, so as it were widowes.Qui nubunt, sic quasi filios non facturi : et qui non nubunt, sic quasi vidui.

46Wherefore they that labour, labour without cause:Wherfore they that labour, labour without cause :Propter quod qui laborant, sine causa laborant :

47for foreigners shall reap their fruits, and shall violently take their goods, and overthrow their houses, and lead their children captive, because in captivity, and famine they beget their children.for foreners shal reape their fruites, & shal violently take their goodes, and ouerthrow their houses, and lead theire children captiue, because in captiuitie, and famine they beget their children.Fructus enim illorum alienigenæ metent, et substantiam illorum rapient, et domos evertent, et filios eorum captivabunt, quia in captivitate et fame generant natos suos.

48And they that play the merchants by robbery, the longer they adorn their cities and houses, and their possessions and persons:And they that play the marchantes by robrie, the longer they adorne their cities and houses, and their possessions and persons :Et qui negotiantur in rapina, quantum diu exornant civitates et domos suas, et possessions et personas suas,

49so much the more will I be zealous toward them, upon their sins, saith our Lord.so much the more wil I be zealous toward them, vpon their sinnes, sayth our Lord.tanto magis adzelabor eos super peccata sua, dicit Dominus :

50As a whore enviethzelatur: is jealous of, bears envy against, not merely covets an honest and very good woman:As a whore ennieth an honest & very good woman :Quomodo zelatur fornicaria mulierem idoneam et bonam valde,

51so shall justice hate impiety when she adorneth herself, and accuseth her to her face, when he shall come that may defend him that searcheth out all upon the earth.so shal iustice hate impietie when she adorneth herselfe, and accuseth her to her face, when he shal come that may defend him that searcheth out al vpon the earth.sic zelabitur justitia iniquitatem cum exornat se, et accusat eam in facie, cum venerit qui defendat exquirentem omne peccatum super terram.

52Therefore be not made like to her, nor to her works.Therefore be not made like to her, nor to her workes.Propterea nolite similari ei, nec operibus ejus :

53For yet a little while and iniquity shall be taken away from the earth, and justice shall reign over you.For yet a little whyle & iniquitie shal be taken away from the earth, & iustice shal reigne ouer you.quoniam adhuc pusillum, et tolletur iniquitas a terra, et justitia regnabit in vos.

54Let not the sinner say he hath not sinned: because he shall burn coals of fire upon his head, that saith I have not sinned before our Lord God and his glory.Let not the sinner say he hath not sinned : because he shal burne coales of fire vpon his head, that sayth I haue not sinned before our Lord God and his glorie.Non dicat peccator se non peccasse : quoniam carbones ignis comburet super caput ejus, qui dicit : Non peccavi coram Domino Deo et gloria ipsius.

55Behold our Lord shall know all the works of men, and their inventions, and their cogitations, and their hearts.Behold our Lord shal know al the workes of men, and their inuentions, & their cogitations, and their hartes.Ecce Dominus cognoscet omnia opera hominum, et adinventiones illorum, et cogitationes illorum, et corda illorum.

56For he said: Let the earth be made, and it was made: let the heaven be made, and it was made.For he sayd : Let the earth be made, and it was made : let the heauen be made, & it was made.Dixit enim : Fiat terra, et facta est : fiat cælum, et factum est.

57And by his word the stars were made, and he knoweth the number of the stars.And by his worde the starrs were made, & he knoweth the number of the starres.Et in verbo illius stellæ fundatæ sunt, et novit numerum stellarum.

58Who searcheth the depth and the treasures thereof: who hath measured the sea, and capacity thereof.Who searcheth the depth and the treasures therof : who hath measured the sea, & capacitie therof.Qui scrutatur abyssum, et thesauros illarum : qui mensus est mare, et conceptum ejus.

59Who hath shut up the sea in the midst of waters, and hath hanged the earth upon the waters with his word.Who hath shut vp the sea in the midest of waters, & hath hanged the earth vpon the waters with his word.Qui conclusit mare in medio aquarum, et suspendit terram super aquas verbo suo.

60Who hath spread heaven as it were a vault, over the waters he hath founded it.Who hath spred heauen as it were a vault, ouer the waters he hath founded it.Qui extendit cælum quasi cameram, super aquas fundavit eum.

61Who hath put fountains of waters in the desert, and lakes upon the tops of mountains, to send forth rivers from the high rock to water the earth.Who hath put fountaines of waters in the desert, and lakes vpon the toppes of mountaines, to sendforth riuers from the high rocke to watter the earth.Qui posuit in deserto fontes aquarum, et super verticem montium lacus ad emittendum flumina ab eminenti petra, ut potaret terram.

62Who made man and put his heart in the midst of the body, and gave him spirit, life and understanding.Who made man & put his hart in the midds of the bodie, and gaue him spirit, life and vnderstanding.Qui finxit hominem, et posuit cor suum in medio corporis, et misit ei spiritum, vitam et intellectum,

63And the inspiration of God omnipotent that made all things, and searcheth all hid things, in the secrets of the earth.And the inspiration of God omnipotent that made al thinges, and searcheth al hid thinges, in the secretes of the earth.et spiramen Dei omnipotentis qui fecit omnia, et scrutinat omnia absconsa in absconsis terræ.

64He knoweth your invention, and what you think in your hearts sinning, and willing to hide your sins.He knoweth your inuention, and what you thinke in your hartes sinning, and willing to hide your sinnes.Hic novit adinventionem vestram, et quæ cogitatis in cordibus vestris peccantes et volentes occultare peccata vestra.

65Wherefore our Lord in searching hath searched all your works, and he will put you all to open shame,Wherfore our Lord in searching hath searched al your workes, and he wil put you al to open shame,Propter quod Dominus scrutinando scrutinavit omnia opera vestra, et traducet vos omnes,

66and you shall be confounded when your sins shall come forth before men, and the iniquities shall be they, that shall stand accusers in that day.and you shal be confounded when your sinnes shal come forth before men, and the iniquities shal be they, that shal stand accusers in that day.et vos confusi eritis cum processerint peccata vestra coram hominibus, et iniquitates erunt, quæ accusatores stabunt in die illo.

67What will you do? or how shall you hide your sins before God and his Angels?What wil you doe? or how shal you hide your sinnes before God and his Angels?Quid facietis ? aut quomodo abscondetis peccata vestra coram Deo et angelis ejus ?

68Behold God is the Judge, fear him. Cease from your sins, and now forget your iniquities to do them any more, and God will bring you out, and deliver you from all tribulation.Behold God is the Iudge, feare him. Cease from your sinnes, and now forget your iniquities to doe them anie more, & God wil bring you out, and deliuer you from al tribulation.Ecce judex Deus, timete eum. Desinite a peccatis vestris, et obliviscamini iniquitates vestras jam agere eas in sempiterno, et Deus educet vos, et liberabit de omni tribulatione.

69For behold the heat of a great multitude is kindled over you, and they shall take certain of you by violence, and shall make the slain to be meat for idols.For behold the heate of a great multitude is kindled ouer you, and they shal take certaine of you by violence, & shal make the slaine to be meate for idols.Ecce enim incenditur ardor super vos turbæ copiosæ, et rapient quosdam ex vobis, et cibabunt idolis occisos :

70And they that shall consent unto them, shall be to them in derision, and in reproach, and in conculcationconculcatio: a trampling under foot.And they that shal consent vnto them, shal be to them in derision, and in reproch, and in conculcation.et qui consenserint eis, erunt illis in derisum, et in improperium, et in conculcationem.

71For there shall be place against places, and against the next cities great insurrection upon them that fear our Lord.For there shal be place against places, and against the next cities great insurrection vpon them that feare our Lord.Erit enim locis locus, et in vicinas civitates exurrectio multa super timentes Dominum.

72They shall be as it were mad sparing no body, to spoil and waste yet them that fear our Lord.They shal be as it were madde sparing no bodie, to spoyle and waste yet them that feare our Lord.Erunt quasi insani nemini parcentes, ad diripiendum et devastandum adhuc timentes Dominum,

73because they shall waste and spoil the goods, and shall cast them out of their houses.because they shal waste and spoyle the goodes, and shal cast them out of their houses.quia devastabunt et diripient substantias, et de domibus suis eos ejicient.

74Then shall appear the probationprobatio: the testing, the trial, not legal probation of mine elect, as gold that is proved by the fire.Then shal appeare the probation of mine elect, as gold that is proued by the fire.Tunc parebit probatio electorum meorum, ut aurum quod probatur ab igne.

75Hear my beloved, saith our Lord: Behold the days of tribulation are come: and out of them I will deliver you.Heare my beloued, sayth our Lord : Behold the dayes of tribulation are come : and out of them I wil deliuer you.Audite dilecti mei, dicit Dominus : Ecce adsunt dies tribulationis, et de his liberabo vos.

76Do not fear, nor stagger, because God is your guide.Doe not feare, nor stagger, because God is your guide.Ne timeatis, nec hæsitetis, quoniam Deus dux vester est.

77And he that keepeth my commandments, and precepts, saith our Lord God: Let not your sins overwaypræponderare: outweigh, bear you down you, nor your iniquities be advanced over you.And he that kepeth my commandmentes, and precepts, sayth our Lord God : Let not your sinnes ouerway you, nor your inquities be aduanced ouer you.Et qui servat mandata et præcepta mea, dicit Dominus Deus ne præponderent vos peccata vestra, ne superelevent se iniquitates vestræ.

78Woe to them that are entangled with their sins, and are covered with their iniquities, as a field is entangled with the wood, and the path thereof covered with thorns, by which no man passeth, and it is closed out, and cast to be devoured of the fire.Woe to them that are entangled with their sinnes, and are couered with their iniquities, as a filde is entangled with the wood, & the path therof couered with thornes, by which no man passeth, & it is closed out, & cast to be deuoured of the fire.Væ qui constringuntur a peccatis suis, et obteguntur ab iniquitatibus suis, quemadmodum ager constringitur a silva, et spinis tegitur semita ejus per quam non transit homo, et excluditur, et mittitur ad devorationem ignis.
