He cometh once again into Jewry boldly (the time that he would be killed of them, being not yet come) and raiseth Lazarus four days buried. 47. At which miracle the blind malice of the rulers so increaseth, that in Council they conclude to make him away. howbeit the high Priest prophecieth unawares, of the salvation of the world by his death. 54 He thereupon goeth again out of the way.He commeth once againe into Iewrie boldly (the time that he would be killed of them, being not yet come) and raiseth Lazarus foure daies buried. 47. And there was a certain sick man, Lazarus of Bethania, of the town of Marie and Martha her sister. (AND there was a certaine sicke man, Lazarus of Bethánia, of the towne of Marie and Martha her sister. (Erat autem quidam languens Lazarus a Bethania, de castello Mariæ et Marthæ sororis ejus.

²And Marie was she that anointed our Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hear: whose brother Lazarus was sick.)And Marie was she * that anointed our Lord with ointement, and wiped his feete with her heare: whose brother Lazarus was sicke.)(Maria autem erat quæ unxit Dominum unguento, et extersit pedes ejus capillis suis : cujus frater Lazarus infirmabatur.)

³His sisters therefore sent to him saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest, is sick.His sisters therfore sent to him saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou louest, is sicke.Miserunt ergo sorores ejus ad eum dicentes : Domine, ecce quem amas infirmatur.

⁴And JESUS hearing, said to them, This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God: that the son of God may be glorified by it.And IESVS hearing, said to them, This sicknesse is not to death, but for the glorie of God: that the sonne of God may be glorified by it.Audiens autem Jesus dixit eis : Infirmitas hæc non est ad mortem, sed pro gloria Dei, ut glorificetur Filius Dei per eam.

⁵And JESUS loved Martha, and her sister Marie, and Lazarus.And IESVS loued Martha, and her sister Marie, and Lazarus.Diligebat autem Jesus Martham, et sororem ejus Mariam, et Lazarum.

⁶As he heard therefore that he was sick, then he tarriedmansit: stayed, remained, lingered in the same place two days:As he heard therfore that he was sicke, then he taried in the same place two daies:Ut ergo audivit quia infirmabatur, tunc quidem mansit in eodem loco duobus diebus ;

⁷then after this he saith to his Disciples, Let us go into JewryJudæam: Judea, the land of the Jews again.then after this he saith to his Disciples, Let vs goe into Iewrie againe.deinde post hæc dixit discipulis suis : Eamus in Judæam iterum.

⁸The Disciples say to him, Rabbi, now the Jews sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither again?The Disciples say to him, Rabbi, now the Iewes sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither againe?Dicunt ei discipuli : Rabbi, nunc quærebant te Judæi lapidare, et iterum vadis illuc ?

⁹Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not: because he seeth the light of this world:IESVS answered, Are there not twelue houres of the day? If a man walke in the day, he stumbleth not: because he seeth the light of this world:Respondit Jesus : Nonne duodecim sunt horæ diei ? Si quis ambulaverit in die, non offendit, quia lucem hujus mundi videt :

¹⁰but if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.but if he walke in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.si autem ambulaverit in nocte, offendit, quia lux non est in eo.

¹¹These things he said: and after this he saith to them, Lazarus our friend sleepethdormit: is dead; sleep here is death, from which Christ will wake him: but I go that I may raise him from sleep.These things he said: and after this he saith to them, Lazarus our frende sleepeth: but I goe that I may raise him from sleepe.Hæc ait, et post hæc dixit eis : Lazarus amicus noster dormit : sed vado ut a somno excitem eum.

¹²His Disciples therefore said, Lord, if he sleep, he shall be safe.His Disciples therfore said, Lord, if he sleepe, he shal be safe.Dixerunt ergo discipuli ejus : Domine, si dormit, salvus erit.

¹³but JESUS spake of his death: & they though that he spake of the sleeping of sleep.but IESVS spake of his death: & they though that he spake of the sleeping of sleepe.Dixerat autem Jesus de morte ejus : illi autem putaverunt quia de dormitione somni diceret.

¹⁴Then therefore JESUS said to them plainly, Lazarus is dead:Then therfore IESVS said to them plainely, Lazarus is dead:Tunc ergo Jesus dixit eis manifeste : Lazarus mortuus est :

¹⁵and I am glad for your sake, that you may believe, because I was not there. but let us go to him.and I am glad for your sake, that you may beleeue, because I was not there. but let vs goe to him.et gaudeo propter vos, ut credatis, quoniam non eram ibi, sed eamus ad eum.

¹⁶Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his condisciples, Let us also go, to die with him.Thomas therfore, who is called Didymus, said to his condisciples, Let vs also goe, to die with him.Dixit ergo Thomas, qui dicitur Didymus, ad condiscipulos : Eamus et nos, ut moriamur cum eo.

¹⁷Jesus therefore came, and found him now having been four days in the grave. (IESVS therfore came, and found him now hauing been foure daies in the graue. (Venit itaque Jesus : et invenit eum quatuor dies jam in monumento habentem.

¹⁸and Bethania was nigh to Jerusalem about fifteen furlongsstadiis: stadia, about an eighth of a mile each.)and Bethánia was nigh to Hierusalem about fiftene furlonges.)(Erat autem Bethania juxta Jerosolymam quasi stadiis quindecim.)

¹⁹And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Marie, to comfort them concerning their brother.And many of the Iewes were come to Martha and Marie, to comfort them concerning theire brother.Multi autem ex Judæis venerant ad Martham et Mariam, ut consolarentur eas de fratre suo.

²⁰Martha therefore when she heard that JESUS was come, went to meet him: but Marie sat at home.Martha therfore when she heard that IESVS was come, went to meete him: but Marie sat at home.Martha ergo ut audivit quia Jesus venit, occurrit illi : Maria autem domi sedebat.

²¹Martha therefore said to JESUS, Lord if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Martha therfore said to IESVS, Lord if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Dixit ergo Martha ad Jesum : Domine, si fuisses hic, frater meus non fuisset mortuus :

²²but now also I know that what things soever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.but now also I know that what things soeuer thou shalt aske of God, God wil giue thee.sed et nunc scio quia quæcumque poposceris a Deo, dabit tibi Deus.

²³Jesus saith to her, Thy brother shall rise again.IESVS saith to her, Thy brother shal rise againe.Dicit illi Jesus : Resurget frater tuus.

²⁴Martha saith to him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection, in the last day.Martha saith to him, I know that he shal rise againe in the resurrection, in the last day.Dicit ei Martha : Scio quia resurget in resurrectione in novissimo die.

²⁵Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live.IESVS said to her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that beleeueth in me, although he be dead, shal liue.Dixit ei Jesus : Ego sum resurrectio et vita : qui credit in me, etiam si mortuus fuerit, vivet :

²⁶and every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever, Believest thou this?and euery one that liueth, and beleeueth in me, shal not die for euer, Beleeuest thou this?et omnis qui vivit et credit in me, non morietur in æternum. Credis hoc ?

²⁷She saith to him, Yea Lord, I have believed that thou art CHRIST the son of God that art come into this world.She saith to him, Yea Lord, I haue beleeued that thou art CHRIST the sonne of God that art come into this world.Ait illi : Utique Domine, ego credidi quia tu es Christus, Filius Dei vivi, qui in hunc mundum venisti.

²⁸And when she had said these things, she went, and called Marie her sister secretly, saying, The master is come, & calleth thee.And when she had said these things, she went, and called Marie her sister secretely, saying, The maister is come, & calleth thee.Et cum hæc dixisset, abiit, et vocavit Mariam sororem suam silentio, dicens : Magister adest, et vocat te.

³⁰For JESUS was not yet come into the town: but he was yet in that place where Martha had met him.For IESVS was not yet come into the towne: but he was yet in that place where Martha had mette him.nondum enim venerat Jesus in castellum : sed erat adhuc in illo loco, ubi occurrerat ei Martha.

³¹The Jews therefore that were with her in the house and did comfort her, when they saw Marie that she rose quickly and went forth, followed her, saying, That she goeth to the grave, to weep there.The Iewes therfore that were with her in the house and did comfort her, when they saw Marie that she rose quickly and went forth, folowed her, saying, That she goeth to the graue, to weepe there.Judæi ergo, qui erant cum ea in domo, et consolabantur eam, cum vidissent Mariam quia cito surrexit, et exiit, secuti sunt eam dicentes : Quia vadit ad monumentum, ut ploret ibi.

³²Marie therefore when she was come where JESUS was, seeing him, fell at his feet, and saith to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Marie therfore when she was come where IESVS was, seeing him, fel at his feete, and saith to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Maria ergo, cum venisset ubi erat Jesus, videns eum, cecidit ad pedes ejus, et dicit ei : Domine, si fuisses hic, non esset mortuus frater meus.

³³Jesus therefore when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her, weeping, he groaned in spirit, and troubled himself,IESVS therfore when he saw her weeping, and the Iewes that were come with her, weeping, he groned in spirit, and troubled him self,Jesus ergo, ut vidit eam plorantem, et Judæos, qui venerant cum ea, plorantes, infremuit spiritu, et turbavit seipsum,

³⁴and said, Where have you laid him? They say to him, Lord, come and see.and said, Where haue you laid him? They say to him, Lord, come and see.et dixit : Ubi posuistis eum ? Dicunt ei : Domine, veni, et vide.

³⁵And JESUS wept.And IESVS wept.Et lacrimatus est Jesus.

³⁶The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him.The Iewes therfore said, Behold how he loued him.Dixerunt ergo Judæi : Ecce quomodo amabat eum.

³⁷But certain of them said, Could not he that opened the eyes of the blind man, make that this man should not die?But certaine of them said, Could not he that * opened the eies of the blinde man, make that this man should not die?Quidam autem ex ipsis dixerunt : Non poterat hic, qui aperuit oculos cæci nati, facere ut hic non moreretur ?

³⁸Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the grave. and it was a cave: and a stone was laid over it.IESVS therfore againe groning in him self, commeth to the graue. and it was a caue: and a stone was laid ouer it.Jesus ergo rursum fremens in semetipso, venit ad monumentum. Erat autem spelunca, et lapis superpositus erat ei.

³⁹Jesus saith, Take away the stone. Martha the sister of him that was dead, saith to him, Lord, now he stinkethfœtet: giveth forth a stench (of the corpse), for he is now of four daysquatriduanus: four days dead, dead since the fourth day.IESVS saith, Take away the stone. Martha the sister of him that was dead, saith to him, Lord, now he stinketh, for he is now of foure daies.Ait Jesus : Tollite lapidem. Dicit ei Martha, soror ejus qui mortuus fuerat : Domine, jam fœtet, quatriduanus est enim.

⁴⁰Jesus saith to her, Did not I say to thee, that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?IESVS saith to her, Did not I say to thee, that if thou beleeue, thou shalt see the glorie of God?Dicit ei Jesus : Nonne dixi tibi quoniam si credideris, videbis gloriam Dei ?

⁴¹They took therefore the stone away. And JESUS lifting his eyes upward, said, Father, I give thee thanks that thou hast heard me.They tooke therfore the stone away. And IESVS lifting his eies vpward, said, Father, I giue thee thankes that thou hast heard me.Tulerunt ergo lapidem : Jesus autem, elevatis sursum oculis, dixit : Pater, gratias ago tibi quoniam audisti me.

⁴²and I did know that thou dost always hear me, but for the people that standeth about, have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.and I did know that thou doest alwaies heare me, but for the people that standeth about, haue I said it, that they may beleeue that thou hast sent me.Ego autem sciebam quia semper me audis, sed propter populum qui circumstat, dixi : ut credant quia tu me misisti.

⁴³When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.When he had said these things, he cried with a loude voice, Lazarus, come forth.Hæc cum dixisset, voce magna clamavit : Lazare, veni foras.

⁴⁴And forthwith he came forth that had been dead, bound feet and hands with winding bandsinstitis: strips of grave-cloth, the burial bandages, and his face was tied with a napkinsudario: the face-cloth laid over the dead. JESUS said to them, LooseSolvite: unbind him, free him from the bands him, and let him go.And forthwith he came forth that had been dead, bound feete and handes with winding bandes, and his face was tied with a napkin. IESVS said to them, Loose him, and let him goe.Et statim prodiit qui fuerat mortuus, ligatus pedes, et manus institis, et facies illius sudario erat ligata. Dixit eis Jesus : Solvite eum et sinite abire.

⁴⁵Many therefore of the Jews that were come to Marie and Martha, and had seen the things that JESUS did, believed in him.Many therfore of the Iewes that were come to Marie and Martha, and had seen the things that IESVS did, beleeued in him.Multi ergo ex Judæis, qui venerant ad Mariam, et Martham, et viderant quæ fecit Jesus, crediderunt in eum.

⁴⁶And certain of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that JESUS did.And certaine of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that IESVS did.Quidam autem ex ipsis abierunt ad pharisæos, et dixerunt eis quæ fecit Jesus.

⁴⁷The chief priests therefore and the pharisees gathered a councilconcilium: the Sanhedrin, the Jews' high court and judicial tribunal, and said, What do we, for this man doeth many signs.The cheefe priests therfore and the pharisees gathered a councel, and said, What doe we, for this man doeth many signes.Collegerunt ergo pontifices et pharisæi concilium, et dicebant : Quid facimus, quia hic homo multa signa facit ?

⁴⁸If we let him alone so, all will believe in him: and the Romanes will come, and take away our place and nation.If we let him alone so, al wil beleeue in him: and the Romanes wil come, and take away our place and nation.Si dimittimus eum sic, omnes credent in eum, et venient Romani, et tollent nostrum locum, et gentem.

⁴⁹But one of them named Caiphas, being the high priest of that year, said to them, You know nothing,But one of them named Caiphas, being the high priest of that yere, said to them, You know nothing,Unus autem ex ipsis, Caiphas nomine, cum esset pontifex anni illius, dixit eis : Vos nescitis quidquam,

⁵⁰neither do you consider that it is expedientexpedit: profitable, to our advantage for us that one man die for the people, and the whole nation perish not.neither doe you consider that it is expedient for vs that one man die for the people, and the whole nation perish not.nec cogitatis quia expedit vobis ut unus moriatur homo pro populo, et non tota gens pereat.

⁵¹And this he said not of himself: but being the high priest of that year, he prophecied that JESUS should die for the nation:And this he said not of him self: but being the high priest of that yere, he prophecied that IESVS should die for the nation:Hoc autem a semetipso non dixit : sed cum esset pontifex anni illius, prophetavit, quod Jesus moriturus erat pro gente,

⁵²and not only for the nation, but to gathercongregaret in unum: gather into one, assemble together as one body into one the children of God that were dispersed.and not only for the nation, but to gather into one the children of God that were dispersed.et non tantum pro gente, sed ut filios Dei, qui erant dispersi, congregaret in unum.

⁵³From that day therefore they devised to kill him.From that day therfore they deuised to kil him.Ab illo ergo die cogitaverunt ut interficerent eum.

⁵⁴Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but he went into the country beside the desert unto a city that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his Disciples.IESVS therfore walked no more openly among the Iewes, but he went into the countrie beside the desert vnto a citie that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his Disciples.Jesus ergo jam non in palam ambulabat apud Judæos, sed abiit in regionem juxta desertum, in civitatem quæ dicitur Ephrem, et ibi morabatur cum discipulis suis.

⁵⁵And the PaschPascha: the Passover, the paschal feast and lamb of the Jews was at hand: and many of the country went up to Jerusalem before the Pasch to sanctify themselves.And the Pasche of the Iewes was at hand: and many of the countrie went vp to Hierusalem before the Pasche to sanctifie them selues.Proximum autem erat Pascha Judæorum, et ascenderunt multi Jerosolymam de regione ante Pascha, ut sanctificarent seipsos.

⁵⁶They sought JESUS therefore: and they communed one with an other, standing in the temple, What think you, in that he is not come to the festival day? And the chief Priests & Pharisees had given commandment, that if any man should know where he was, he should tell, that they might apprehend him.They sought IESVS therfore: and they communed one with an other, standing in the temple, What thinke you, in that he is not come to the festiual day? And the cheefe Priests & Pharisees had giuen commaundement, that if any man should know where he was, he should tel, that they might apprehend him.Quærebant ergo Jesum, et colloquebantur ad invicem, in templo stantes : Quid putatis, quia non venit ad diem festum ? Dederant autem pontifices et pharisæi mandatum ut si quis cognoverit ubi sit, indicet, ut apprehendant eum.
