The Rulers dealing as if he hid himself, 1 he cometh to Bethania, 3 Where by occasion of Judas the thief murmuring at Marie Magdalens costly devotion, he foretelleth his death. 12 From thence, though they did now intend to kill Lazarus also, he rideth openly into Jerusalem, the people (because he had raised Lazarus) confessing with their acclamations that he is Christ. 20 Where certain Gentiles desiring to see him, 22 he foretelleth the conversion of the whole world from the Devil to him, to be now instant, as the effect of his death upon the Crosse. 28 The Father also answering from heaven to his prayer made to that purpose, 37 yet after all this, the Jews continue incredulous as Isaias prophecied of them: 42 though many believed, but were ashamed to confess him. 44 Whereupon he sheweth that it is glorious before God, and salvation to themselves, to believe in him, and confess him: and damnable, to despise him.The Rulers dealing as if he hid him self, 1 he commeth to Bethania, 3 Where by occasion of Iudas the theefe murmuring at Marie Magdalens costly deuotion, he foretelleth his death. 12 From thence, though they did now intend to kil Lazarus also, he rideth openly into Hierusalem, the people (because he had raised Lazarus) confessing with their acclamations that he is Christ. 20 Where certaine Gentils desiring to see him, 22 he foretelleth the conuersion of the whole world from the Diuel to him, to be now instant, as the effect of his death vpon the Crosse. 28 The Father also answering from heauen to his prayer made to that purpose, 37 yet after al this, the Iewes continew incredulous as Esay prophecied of them: 42 though many beleeued, but were ashamed to confesse him. 44 Wherevpon he sheweth that it is glorious before God, and saluation to them selues, to beleeue in him, and confesse him: and damnable, to despise him.

Jesus therefore six days before the Paschæ: the Passover, the paschal feast and lamb came to Bethania, where Lazarus was, that had been dead, whom JESUS raised.IESVS therfore sixe daies before the Pasche came to Bethánia, where Lazarus was, that had been dead, whom IESVS raised.Jesus ergo ante sex dies Paschæ venit Bethaniam, ubi Lazarus fuerat mortuus, quem suscitavit Jesus.

2And they made him a supper there: and Martha ministered, but Lazarus was one of them that sate at the table with him.And they made him a supper there: and Martha ministred, but Lazarus was one of them that sate at the table with him.

3Marie therefore took a libram: a libra, a Roman pound (about twelve ounces) of ointment of right nardi pistici: ointment of pure nard, a costly aromatic oil from the spikenard plant, pretiosi: of great price, costly, not "dear, cherished", and anointed the feet of JESUS, and wiped his feet with her hear: and the house was filled of the odour of the ointment.Marie therfore tooke a pownd of ointement of right spikenard, pretious, and anointed the feete of IESVS, and wiped his feete with her heare: and the house was filled of the odour of the ointment.

4One therefore of his disciples, Judas Iscariote, he that was to betray him, said,One therfore of his disciples, Iudas Iscariote, he that was to betray him, said,Dixit ergo unus ex discipulis ejus, Judas Iscariotes, qui erat eum traditurus :

5Why was not this ointment sold for three-hundred denariis: denarii, Roman silver coins, and given to the poor? Why was not this ointment sold for three-hundred pence, and giuen to the poore?

6And he said this, not because he cared for the poor: but because he was a thief, and having the purse, carried the things that were put in.And he said this, not because he cared for the poore: but because he was a theefe, and hauing the purse, caried the things that were put in.Dixit autem hoc, non quia de egenis pertinebat ad eum, sed quia fur erat, et loculos habens, ea quæ mittebantur, portabat.

7Jesus therefore said, Let her alone that she may keep it for the day of my burial.IESVS therfore said, Let her alone that she may keepe it for the day of my burial.Dixit ergo Jesus : Sinite illam ut in diem sepulturæ meæ servet illud.

8For the poor you have always with you: but me you shall not have always. For the poore you haue alwaies with you: but me you shal not haue alwaies.

9A great multitude therefore of the Jews knew that he was there: and they came, not for JESUS only, but that they might see Lazarus, whom he raised from the dead.A great multitude therfore of the Iewes knew that he was there: and they came, not for IESVS only, but that they might see Lazarus, whom he raised from the dead.

10But the chief Priests devised for to kill Lazarus also:But the cheefe Priests deuised for to kil Lazarus also:Cogitaverunt autem principes sacerdotum ut et Lazarum interficerent :

11because many for him of the Jews went away, and believed in JESUS.because many for him of the Iewes went away, and beleeued in IESVS.quia multi propter illum abibant ex Judæis, et credebant in Jesum.

12And on the morrow a great multitude that was come to the festival day, when they had heard that JESUS cometh to Jerusalem:And on the morow a great multitude that was come to the festiual day, when they had heard that IESVS commeth to Hierusalem:In crastinum autem, turba multa quæ venerat ad diem festum, cum audissent quia venit Jesus Jerosolymam,

13they took the boughs of palms, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna, blessed is he that cometh in the name of our Lord, the king of Israel.they tooke the * boughes of palmes, and went forth to meete him, and cried, Hosanna, blessed is he that commeth in the name of our Lord, the king of Israel.acceperunt ramos palmarum, et processerunt obviam ei, et clamabant : Hosanna, benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini, rex Israël.

14And JESUS found a young ass, and sate upon it, as it is written,And IESVS found a yong asse, and sate vpon it, as it is written,Et invenit Jesus asellum, et sedit super eum, sicut scriptum est :

15Fear not daughter of Sion: behold, thy king cometh sitting upon an asses colt.Feare not daughter of Sion: behold, thy king commeth sitting vpon an asses colt.Noli timere, filia Sion : ecce rex tuus venit sedens super pullum asinæ.

16These things his disciples did not know at the first: but when JESUS was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written of him, and these things they did to him. These things his disciples did not know at the first: but when IESVS was glorified, then they remembred that these things had been written of him, and these things they did to him.Hæc non cognoverunt discipuli ejus primum : sed quando glorificatus est Jesus, tunc recordati sunt quia hæc erant scripta de eo, et hæc fecerunt ei.

17The multitude therefore gave testimony, which was with him when he called Lazarus out of the grave, and raised him from the dead. The multitude therfore gaue testimonie, which was with him when he called Lazarus out of the graue, and raised him from the dead.

18For therefore also the multitude came to meet him, because they heard that he had done this sign. For therfore also the multitude came to meete him, because they heard that he had done this signe.

19The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Do you see that we prevail nothing? behold, the whole world is gone after him.The Pharisees therfore said among them selues, Doe you see that we preuaile nothing? behold, the whole world is gone after him.Pharisæi ergo dixerunt ad semetipsos : Videtis quia nihil proficimus ? ecce mundus totus post eum abiit.

20And there were certain Gentiles of them that came up to adorarent: worship, do religious homage to (the latria due to God alone), not merely admire in the festival day.And there were certaine Gentiles of them that came vp to adore in the festiual day.

21These therefore came to Philip who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we are desirous to see JESUS.These therfore came to Philippe who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we are desirous to see IESVS.Hi ergo accesserunt ad Philippum, qui erat a Bethsaida Galilææ, et rogabant eum, dicentes : Domine, volumus Jesum videre.

22Philip cometh, and telleth Andrew. Again Andrew & Philip told JESUS.Philippe commeth, and telleth Andrew. Againe Andrew & Philippe told IESVS.Venit Philippus, et dicit Andreæ ; Andreas rursum et Philippus dixerunt Jesu.

23But JESUS answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man shall be glorified. But IESVS answered them, saying, The houre is come, that the Sonne of man shal be glorified.

24Amen, amen I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falling into the ground, die: itself remaineth alone. but if it die, it bringeth much fruit.Amen, amen I say to you, vnles the graine of wheate falling into the ground, die: it self remaineth alone. but if it die, it bringeth much fruite.Amen, amen dico vobis, nisi granum frumenti cadens in terram, mortuum fuerit,

25He that loveth his life, shall lose it: and he that hateth his life in this world, doth keep it to life everlasting. He that loueth his life, shal lose it: and he that hateth his life in this world, doth keepe it to life euerlasting.ipsum solum manet : si autem mortuum fuerit, multum fructum affert.

26If any man ministrat: servant, attendant (not a clergyman or official) to me, let him follow me: and where I am, there also shall my minister be. If any man minister to me, my father will honour him.If any man minister to me, let him folow me: and where I am, there also shal my minister be. If any man minister to me, my father wil honour him.

27Now my soul is troubled. And what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But therefore came I into this hour. Now my soule is troubled. And what shal I say? Father, saue me from this houre. But therfore came I into this houre.Nunc anima mea turbata est. Et quid dicam ? Pater, salvifica me ex hac hora. Sed propterea veni in horam hanc :

28Father, glorify thy name. A voice therefore came from heaven, Both I have glorified it, and again I will glorify it.Father, glorifie thy name. A voice therfore came from heauen, Both I haue glorified it, and againe I wil glorifie it.Pater, clarifica nomen tuum.

29The multitude therefore that stood and had heard, said that it thundered. Others said, An Angel spake to him.The multitude therfore that stoode and had heard, said that it thundered. Others said, An Angel spake to him.

30Jesus answered, and said This voice came not for me, but for your sake.IESVS answered, and said This voice came not for me, but for your sake.Respondit Jesus, et dixit : Non propter me hæc vox venit, sed propter vos.

31Now is the judgement of the world: now the princeps: the ruler, the chief (here the Devil, ruler of the fallen world), not a royal heir of this world shall cast forth. Now is the iudgement of the world: now the Prince of this world shal cast forth.Nunc judicium est mundi : nunc princeps hujus mundi ejicietur foras.

32And I, if I be exaltatus: lifted up (on the Cross), raised on high from the earth, will draw all things to myself. (And I, * if I be exalted from the earth, wil draw al things to my self.

33and this he said, signifying what death he should die.)and this he said, signifying what death he should die.)(Hoc autem dicebat, significans qua morte esset moriturus.)

34The multitude answered him, We have heard out of the law, that CHRIST abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be exalted? Who is this Son of man?The multitude answered him, We haue heard out of the law, that CHRIST abideth for euer: and how saiest thou, The Sonne of man must be exalted? Who is this Sonne of man?Respondit ei turba : Nos audivimus ex lege, quia Christus manet in æternum : et quomodo tu dicis : Oportet exaltari Filium hominis ? quis est iste Filius hominis ?

35Jesus therefore said to them, Yet a little while, the light is among you. Walk whiles you have the light, that the darkness overtake you not. And he that walketh in darkness, knoweth not whither he goeth.IESVS therfore said to them, Yet a little while, the light is among you. Walke whiles you haue the light, that the darkenesse ouertake you not. And he that walketh in darkenesse, knoweth not whither he goeth.

36Whiles you have the light, believe in the light, that you may be the children of light. These things JESUS spake and he went away, and hid himself from them.Whiles you haue the light, beleeue in the light, that you may be the children of light. These things IESVS spake and he went away, and hid him self from them.Dum lucem habetis, credite in lucem, ut filii lucis sitis.

37And whereas he had done so many signs before them, they believed not in him:And whereas he had done so many signes before them, they beleeued not in him:Cum autem tanta signa fecisset coram eis, non credebant in eum ;

38that the saying of Isaias the Prophet might be fulfilled, which he said, Lord, who hath believed the hearing of us? and the Arm of our Lord to whom hath it been revealed?that the saying of Esay the Prophet might be fulfilled, which he said, Lord, who hath beleeued the hearing of vs? and the Arme of our Lord to whom hath it bene reuealed?ut sermo Isaiæ prophetæ impleretur, quem dixit : Domine, quis credidit auditui nostro ? et brachium Domini cui revelatum est ?

39Therefore they could not believe, because Isaias said again,Therfore they could not beleeue, because Esay said againe,Propterea non poterant credere, quia iterum dixit Isaias :

40He hath blinded their eyes, and induravit: hardened, made obdurate their heart: that they may not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I heal them.He hath blinded their eies, and indurated their hart: that they may not see with their eies, nor vnderstand with their hart, and be conuerted, and I heale them.

41These things said Isaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him. These things said Esaie, when he saw his glorie, and spake of him.Hæc dixit Isaias, quando vidit gloriam ejus, et locutus est de eo.

42But yet of the Princes also many believed in him: but for the Pharisees they did not confess, that they might not be cast out of the Synagogue. But yet of the Princes also many beleeued in him: but for the Pharisees they did not confesse, that they might not be cast out of the Synagogue.

43for they loved the glory of men more, then the glore of God.for they loued the glorie of men more, then the glore of God.Dilexerunt enim gloriam hominum magis quam gloriam Dei.

44But JESUS cried, and said, He that believeth in me, doth not believe in me, but in him that sent me.But IESVS cried, and said, He that beleeueth in me, doth not beleeue in me, but in him that sent me.Jesus autem clamavit, et dixit : Qui credit in me, non credit in me, sed in eum qui misit me.

45And he that seeth me, seeth him that sent me.And he that seeth me, seeth him that sent me.Et qui videt me, videt eum qui misit me.

46I a light am come into this world: that every one which believeth in me, may not remain in the darkness.I a light am come into this world: that euery one which beleeueth in me, may not remaine in the darknesse.

47And if any man hear my words, and keep them not: I do not judge him. for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. And if any man heare my wordes, and keepe them not: I doe not iudge him. for I came not to iudge the world, but to saue the world.

48He that despiseth me, & receiveth not my words, hath that judgeth him. the word that I have spoken, that shall judge him in the last day.He that despiseth me, & receiueth not my wordes, hath that iudgeth him. the word that I haue spoken, that shal iudge him in the last day. Sermo quem locutus sum, ille judicabit eum in novissimo die.

49Because of myself I have not spoken, but the Father that sent me, he gave me commandment what I should say, and what I should speak.Because of my self I haue not spoken, but the Father that sent me, he gaue me commaundement what I should say, and what I should speake.

50And I know that his commandment is life everlasting. The things therefore that I speak: as the Father said to me, so do I speak. And I know that his commaundement is life euerlasting. The things therfore that I speake: as the Father said to me, so doe I speake.Et scio quia mandatum ejus vita æterna est : quæ ergo ego loquor, sicut dixit mihi Pater, sic loquor.

6A thief. Judas did not then first perish when he should our Lord, for he was a thief before: and being lost he yet followed Christ, not in heart, but in body only. Which our Master tolerated, to give us a lesson to tolerate the ill, rather then divide the body. Aug. tract. 50 in Io.
