He exhorteth them to abide in him (that is, his Church, being the true vine, and not the Synagogue of the Jews any more) 9 and in his love, loving one an other, and keeping his commandments: 13 shewing how much he accounteth of them, by this that he dieth for them, 15 and revealeth unto them the secrets of heaven, 17 and appointeth their fruit to be perpetual: 18 confirming them also against the persecutions and hatred of the obstinate Jews.He exhorteth them to abide in him (that is, his Church, being the true vine, and not the Synagogue of the Iewes any more) 9 and in his loue, louing one an other, and keeping his commaundements: 13 shewing how much he accounteth of them, by this that he dieth for them, 15 and reuealeth vnto them the secretes of heauen, 17 and appointeth their fruite to be perpetual: 18 confirming them also against the persecutions and hatred of the obstinate Iewes.

I AM the true vine: and my father is the husband-agricola: the vinedresser, the keeper and tiller of the vine.I AM the true vine: and my father is the husband-man.

2Every branch in me, not bearing fruit, he will take it away: and every one that beareth fruit, he will purgabit: prune, cleanse the branch of what hinders its fruit it, that it may bring more fruit.Euery branche in me, not bearing fruite, he wil take it away: and euery one that beareth fruite, he wil purge it, that it may bring more fruite.

3Now you are clean for the word which I have spoken to you.Now you are cleane for the word which I haue spoken to you.Jam vos mundi estis propter sermonem quem locutus sum vobis.

4Manete: remain, dwell, continue in me: and I in you. As the branch can not bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine: so you neither, unless you abide in me.Abide in me: and I in you. As the branche can not beare fruite of it self, vnles it abide in the vine: so you neither, vnles you abide in me.Manete in me, et ego in vobis. Sicut palmes non potest ferre fructum a semetipso, nisi manserit in vite, sic nec vos, nisi in me manseritis.

5I am the vine: you the branches. he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing.I am the vine: you the branches. he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruite: for without me you can doe nothing.Ego sum vitis, vos palmites : qui manet in me, et ego in eo, hic fert fructum multum, quia sine me nihil potestis facere.

6If any abide not in me: he shall be cast forth as the branch, and shall wither, and they shall gather him up, and cast him into the fire, and he burneth. If any abide not in me: he shal be cast forth as the branche, and shal wither, and they shal gather him vp, and cast him into the fire, and he burneth.

7If you abide in me, and my words abide in you: you shall ask what thing soever you will, and it shall be done to you.If you abide in me, and my wordes abide in you: you shal aske what thing soeuer you wil, and it shal be done to you.

8In this my father is glorified: that you bring very much fruit, and become my Disciples. In this my father is glorified: that you bring very much fruite, and become my Disciples.

9As my father hath loved me, I also have loved you. Abide in my love.As my father hath loued me, I also haue loued you. Abide in my loue.Sicut dilexit me Pater, et ego dilexi vos. Manete in dilectione mea.

10If you keep my precepts, you shall abide in my love: as I also have kept my fathers precepts, and do abide in his love.If you keepe my precepts, you shal abide in my loue: as I also haue kept my fathers precepts, and doe abide in his loue.

11These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be filled. These things I haue spoken to you, that my ioy may be in you, and your ioy may be filled.Hæc locutus sum vobis : ut gaudium meum in vobis sit, et gaudium vestrum impleatur.

12This is my precept, that you love one an other, as I have loved you.* This is my precept, that you loue one an other, as I haue loued you.

13Greater love then this no man hath, that a man ponat: lay down, give up his life freely his life for his friends.Greater loue then this no man hath, that a man yeld his life for his frendes.

14You are my friends, if you do the things that I command you.You are my frendes, if you doe the things that I commaund you.Vos amici mei estis, si feceritis quæ ego præcipio vobis.

15Now I call you not servants: for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth. But you I have called friends: because all things whatsoever I heard of my father, I have nota feci: made known, revealed in full unto you.Now I cal you not seruants: for the seruant knoweth not what his lord doeth. But you I haue called frendes: because al things whatsoeuer I heard of my father, I haue notified vnto you.Jam non dicam vos servos : quia servus nescit quid faciat dominus ejus. Vos autem dixi amicos : quia omnia quæcumque audivi a Patre meo, nota feci vobis.

16You chose not me, but I chose you: and have appointed you: that you go, & bring fruit: and your fruit abide: that whatsoever you ask the father in my name, he may give it you.You chose not me, but I chose you: and haue appointed you: that you goe, & bring fruite: and your fruite abide: that whatsoeuer you aske the father in my name, he may giue it you.

17These things I command you, that you love one an other. These things I commaund you, that you loue one an other.Hæc mando vobis : ut diligatis invicem.

18If the world hate you: know ye that it hath hated me before you.If the world hate you: know ye that it hath hated me before you.Si mundus vos odit, scitote quia me priorem vobis odio habuit.

19If you had been of the world, the world would love his own. but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.If you had been of the world, the world would loue his owne. but because you are not of the world, but I haue chosen you out of the world, therfore the world hateth you.

20Remember my word that I said to you, The servant is not greater then his master. If they have persecuted me, you also will they persecute. if they have kept my word, yours also will they keep.Remembre my word that I said to you, * The seruant is not greater then his maister. If they haue persecuted me, you also wil they persecute. if they haue kept my word, yours also wil they keepe.

21But all these things they will do to you for my name sake: because they know not him that sent me.But al these things they wil doe to you for my name sake: because they know not him that sent me.Sed hæc omnia facient vobis propter nomen meum : quia nesciunt eum qui misit me.

22If I had not come, and spoken to them, they should not have sin: but now they have no excuse of their sin.If I had not come, and spoken to them, they should not haue sinne: but now they haue no excuse of their sinne.

23He that hateth me, hateth my Father also.He that hateth me, hateth my Father also.Qui me odit, et Patrem meum odit.

24If I had not done among them works that no other man hath done, they should not have sin: but now both they have seen, and they do hate both me and my Father. If I had not done among them workes that no other man hath done, they should not haue sinne: but now both they haue seen, and they doe hate both me and my Father.

25But that the word may be fulfilled, which is written in their law: That they hated me gratis: freely, for nothing, without payment. But that the word may be fulfilled, which is written in their law: That they hated me gratis.

26But when the Paraclitus: the Comforter, the Advocate (the Holy Ghost) cometh whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall give testimony of me:But when the Paraclete commeth whom I * wil send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, which procedeth from the Father, he shal giue testimonie of me:Cum autem venerit Paraclitus, quem ego mittam vobis a Patre, Spiritum veritatis, qui a Patre procedit, ille testimonium perhibebit de me ;

27and you shall give testimony, because you are with me from the beginning.and you shal giue testimonie, because you are with me from the beginning.et vos testimonium perhibebitis, quia ab initio mecum estis.

Annotations

4Unless you abide. These conditional speeches, If you remain in the vine, If you keep my commandments, and such like, give us to wit that we be not sure to persist or persevere, nor to be saved, but under conditions to be fulfilled by us. Aug. de corrept. & gra. c. 13.

No man sure of perseverance..

4Unless it abide. Whosoever by Heresy or Schism or for any other cause is cut of or separated from the Church, he can do no meritorious work to Salvation.

10Keep my precepts. This careful and often admonition of keeping his commandments, proveth that a Christian man's life is not only or principally in faith, but in good works.

Not only faith..

24If I had. If the Jews had not sinned by refusing Christ, in case he had not done greater miracles then any other: then were it a great folly of Catholics to believe Luthers or Calvins new opinions without any miracles at all.

26Whom I will send. The Holy Ghost is sent by the Son, therefore he proceedeth from him also, as from the Father: though the late Schismatical Greekes think otherwise.

27You shall give. He vouchsafeth to join together the testimony of the Holy Ghost, and of the Apostles: that we may see the testimony of truth jointly to consist in the Holy Ghost and in the Prelates of the Church.
