After his Sermon of farewell, he prayeth to his Father, that seeing he hath now finished his work, he will give him his appointed glory, for the conversion of all nations, 6 and preserve his Apostles, and his Church after them in unity and verity (that is, from Schism and Heresy:) 24 finally also glorify them with him in heaven. After his Sermon of farewel, he prayeth to his Father, that seing he hath now finished his worke, he wil giue him his appointed glorie, for the conuersion of al nations, 6 and preserue his Apostles, and his Church after them in vnitie and veritie (that is, from Schisme and Heresie:) 24 finally also glorifie them with him in heauen.

These things spake JESUS: and lifting up his eyes into heaven, he said, Father, the hour is come, clarifica: make bright with glory, exalt and make renowned thy son, that thy son may glorify thee.THESE things spake IESVS: and lifting vp his eies into heauen, he said, Father, the houre is come, glorifie thy sonne, that thy sonne may glorifie thee.Hæc locutus est Jesus : et sublevatis oculis in cælum, dixit : Pater, venit hora : clarifica Filium tuum, ut Filius tuus clarificet te :

2As thou hast given him power over all flesh that all which thou hast given him, to them he may give life everlasting. As thou hast giuen him power ouer al flesh that al which thou hast giuen him, to them he may giue life euerlasting.sicut dedisti ei potestatem omnis carnis, ut omne, quod dedisti ei, det eis vitam æternam.

3And this is life everlasting that they know thee, the only true God, and whom thou hast sent JESUS CHRIST.And this is life euerlasting that they know thee, the only true God, and whom thou hast sent IESVS CHRIST.Hæc est autem vita æterna : ut cognoscant te, solum Deum verum, et quem misisti Jesum Christum.

4I have glorified thee upon the earth: I have consummavi: completed, brought to a full end the work which thou gauest me to do:I haue glorified thee vpon the earth: I haue consummated the worke which thou gauest me to doe:Ego te clarificavi super terram : opus consummavi, quod dedisti mihi ut faciam :

5and now glorify thou me O Father with thyself, with the glory which I had before the world was, with thee.and now glorifie thou me O Father with thy self, with the glorie which I had before the world was, with thee.et nunc clarifica me tu, Pater, apud temetipsum, claritate quam habui, priusquam mundus esset, apud te.

6I have manifested thy name to the men whom thou gauest me out of the world. Thine they were, and to me thou gauest them: and they have kept thy word.I haue manifested thy name to the men whom thou gauest me out of the world. Thine they were, and to me thou gauest them: and they haue kept thy word.

7Now they have known that all things which thou gauest me, are from thee:Now they haue knowen that al things which thou gauest me, are from thee:Nunc cognoverunt quia omnia quæ dedisti mihi, abs te sunt :

8because the words which thou gauest me, I have given them: and they have received, and known in very deed that I came forth from thee, and have believed that thou didst send me.because the wordes which thou gauest me, I haue giuen them: and they haue receiued, and knowen in very deede that I came forth from thee, and haue beleeued that thou didst send me.quia verba quæ dedisti mihi, dedi eis : et ipsi acceperunt, et cognoverunt vere quia a te exivi, et crediderunt quia tu me misisti.

9For them do I pray: Not for the world do I pray, but for them whom thou hast given me:For them doe I pray: Not for the world doe I pray, but for them whom thou hast giuen me:Ego pro eis rogo ; non pro mundo rogo, sed pro his quos dedisti mihi : quia tui sunt :

10because they be thine: and all my things be thine, and thine be mine: and I am glorified in them. And now I am not in the world, and these are in the world, and I come to thee.because they be thine: and al my things be thine, and thine be mine: and I am glorified in them. And now I am not in the world, and these are in the world, and I come to thee.et mea omnia tua sunt, et tua mea sunt : et clarificatus sum in eis.

11Holy father, keep them in thy name, whom thou hast given me: that they may be one, as also we.Holy father, keepe them in thy name, whom thou hast giuen me: that they may be one, as also we.Et jam non sum in mundo, et hi in mundo sunt, et ego ad te venio. Pater sancte, serva eos in nomine tuo, quos dedisti mihi : ut sint unum, sicut et nos.

12When I was with them, I kept them in thy name. Those whom thou gauest me, have I kept: and none of them perished, but the son of perditionis: the son doomed to destruction, the lost one, that the scripture may be fulfilled. When I was with them, I kept them in thy name. Those * whom thou gauest me, haue I kept: and none of them perished, but the sonne of perdition, that the * scripture may be fulfilled.

13And now I come to thee: and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy filled in themselves. And now I come to thee: and these things I speake in the world, that they may haue my ioy filled in them selues.

14I have given them thy word, and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world: as I also am not of the world.I haue giuen them thy word, and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world: as I also am not of the world.

15I pray not that thou take them away out of the world, but that thou preserve them from evil.I pray not that thou take them away out of the world, but that thou preserue them from euil.

16Of the world they are not: as I also am not of the world.Of the world they are not: as I also am not of the world.

17sanctifica: consecrate, set them apart as holy them in truth. Thy word is truth.Sanctifie them in truth. Thy word is truth.Sanctifica eos in veritate. Sermo tuus veritas est.

18As thou didst send me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. As thou didst send me into the world, I also haue sent them into the world.Sicut tu me misisti in mundum, et ego misi eos in mundum :

19And for them I do sanctify myself: that they also may be sanctified in truth. And for them I doe: sanctifie my self: that they also may be sanctified in truth.et pro eis ego sanctifico meipsum : ut sint et ipsi sanctificati in veritate.

20And not for them only do I pray, but for them also that by their word shall believe in me:And not for them only doe I pray, but for them also that by their word shal beleeue in me:Non pro eis autem rogo tantum, sed et pro eis qui credituri sunt per verbum eorum in me :

21that they all may be one, as thou (Father) in me, and I in thee, that they also in us may be one: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.that they al may be one, as thou (Father) in me, and I in thee, that they also in vs may be one: that the world may beleeue that thou hast sent me.ut omnes unum sint, sicut tu Pater in me, et ego in te, ut et ipsi in nobis unum sint : ut credat mundus, quia tu me misisti.

22And the glory that thou hast given me, have I given to them: that they may be one, as we also are one.And the glorie that thou hast giuen me, haue I giuen to them: that they may be one, as we also are one.

23I in them, and thou in me: that they may be consummati: completed, brought to a full end in one: and the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as me also thou hast loved.I in them, and thou in me: that they may be consummate in one: and the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loued them, as me also thou hast loued.Ego in eis, et tu in me : ut sint consummati in unum : et cognoscat mundus quia tu me misisti, et dilexisti eos, sicut et me dilexisti.

24Father, whom thou hast given, me, I will, that where I am, they also may be with me: that they may see my glory which thou hast given me, because thou hast loved me before the creation of the world.Father, whom thou hast giuen, me, I wil, that where I am, they also may be with me: that they maye see my glorie which thou hast giuen me, because thou hast loued me before the creation of the world.

25Just Father, the world hath not known, thee. but I have known thee: and these have known, that thou didst send me.Iust Father, the world hath not knowen, thee. but I haue knowen thee: and these haue knowen, that thou didst send me.Pater juste, mundus te non cognovit, ego autem te cognovi : et hi cognoverunt, quia tu me misisti.

26And I have notum feci: made known, declared (thy name), not "informed a person" thy name to them, and will notify it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them. And I haue notified thy name to them, and wil notifie it: that the loue wherwith thou hast loued me may be in them, and I in them.

Annotations

3Life everlasting. Both the life of glory in heaven, and of grace here in the Church, consisteth in the knowledge of God: that, in perfect vision: this, in faith working by charity. for, knowledge of God without keeping his commandments, is not true knowledge, that is to say, it is an unprofitable knowledge. 1 Io. 2.

True knowledge of God..

17Sanctify them. Christ prayeth that the Apostles, their successors, & all that shall be of their belief, may be sanctified in truth. Which is as much to say, as to desire that the Church may ever have the Spirit of truth, and be free from error. Which prayer of Christ had not been heard, if the Church might err.

The Church can not err..

20But for them. He expresseth (and it is a great comfort) that he prayeth not only for the Apostles, but for the whole Church after them, that is, for all believers. And all this profound and divine prayer is resembled in the holy Canon of the Mass before the consecration, as here it was made before his visible Sacrifice on the cross.
