In those days there was not a king in Israel, and the tribe of Dan sought possession for itself, that it might dwell therein: for until that day it had not received a lot among the other tribes.IN those dayes there was not a king in Israel, and the tribe of Dan sought possession for it selfe, that it might dwel therein: for vntil that day it had `c` not receaued a lotte among the other tribes.In diebus illis non erat rex in Israël, et tribus Dan quærebat possessionem sibi, ut habitaret in ea : usque ad illum enim diem inter ceteras tribus sortem non acceperat.
2Therefore the children of Dan sent five of their stock and family most valiant from Saraa and Esthaol, that they might view the land, and diligently behold it, and they said to them: Go, and consider the land. 3and knowing the voice of the young man the Levite, and using his lodging, they said to him: Who brought thee hither? what doest thou here? For what cause wouldest thou come hither?et agnoscentes vocem adolescentis Levitæ, utentesque illius diversorio, dixerunt ad eum : Quis te huc adducit ? quid hic agis ? quam ob causam huc venire voluisti ?

12and going up they tarried in Cariathiarim of Juda: which place from that time took the name of the Vulgate: Castrorum: a (military) camp; the place Mahaneh-Dan of Dan, and it is at the back of Cariathiarim.and going vp they taried in Cariathiarim of Iuda: which place from that time tooke the name of the Tentes of Dan, and it is at the backe of Cariathiarim.ascendentesque manserunt in Cariathiarim Judæ : qui locus ex eo tempore Castrorum Dan nomen accepit, et est post tergum Cariathiarim.

17But they, that were entered the house of the young man, endeavoured to take away the graven, the Ephod and the idols, and molten god, and the priest stood before the door, the six hundred most valiant men waiting, awaiting, not anticipating · Vulgate: expectantibus not far off.But they, that were entred the house of the yong man, endeuoured to take away the grauen, the Ephod and the idols, and molten god, and the priest stoode before the doore, the six hundred most valiant men expecting not farre of.At illi, qui ingressi fuerant domum juvenis, sculptile, et ephod, et theraphim, atque conflatile tollere nitebantur, et sacerdos stabat ante ostium, sexcentis viris fortissimis haud procul expectantibus.
18They therefore that were entered took the graven, the Ephod, the theraphim and molten god. To whom the priest said: What do you?They therfore that were entred tooke the grauen, the Ephod, the theraphim and molten god. To whom the priest said: What doe you?Tulerunt igitur qui intraverant sculptile, ephod, et idola, atque conflatile. Quibus dixit sacerdos : Quid facitis ?
19To whom they answered: Hold thy peace, and put thy finger upon thy mouth and come with us, that we may have thee for a father, and a priest. Whether is better for thee, that thou be a priest in the house of one man, or in one tribe and family in Israel?To whom they answered: Hold thy peace, and put thy finger vpon thy mouth and come with vs, that we may haue thee for a father, and a priest. 23and at their back began to shout. Who looking back, said to Michas: What meanest thou? Why doest thou cry?and at their backe began to shoute. Who looking backe, said to Michas: What meanest thou? Why doest thou crie?et post tergum clamare cœperunt. Qui cum respexissent, dixerunt ad Micham : Quid tibi vis ? cur clamas ?
24Who answered: My gods, which I made me, you have taken away, and the priest, and all that I have, and do you say: What aileth thee?Who answered: My Goddes, which I made me, you haue taken away, and the priest, and al that I haue, and doe you say: What aileth thee?Qui respondit : Deos meos, quos mihi feci, tulistis, et sacerdotem, et omnia quæ habeo, et dicitis : Quid tibi est ?

26And so they went on their journey begun. But Michas seeing that they were stronger than he, returned into his house.And so they went on their iourney begone. But Michas seing that they were stronger then he, returned into his house.Et sic cœpto itinere perrexerunt. Videns autem Michas quod fortiores se essent, reversus est in domum suam.

And the city was situated in the country of Rohob: which building again they dwelt in it,no man at al bringing them succour, for that they dwelt farre from Sidon, and had with no men anie societie and affayres. And the citie was situated in the countrie of Rohob: which building agayne they dwelt in it,nullo penitus ferente præsidium, eo quod procul habitarent a Sidone, et cum nullo hominum haberent quidquam societatis ac negotii. Erat autem civitas sita in regione Rohob : quam rursum exstruentes habitaverunt in ea,

30And they set up to themselves the graven idol, and Jonathan the son of Gerson the son of Moyses, and his sons priests in the tribe of Dan, until the day of their captivity.And they set vp to them selues the grauen idol, and Ionathan the sonne of Gerson the sonne of Moyses, and his sonnes priestes in the tribe of Dan, vntil the day of their captiuitie.Posueruntque sibi sculptile, et Jonathan filium Gersam filii Moysi ac filios ejus sacerdotes in tribu Dan, usque ad diem captivitatis suæ.
31And the idol of Michas remained with them all the time, that the house of God was in Silo.
