Chapter 18 of 24

The Church is taught to commit the reuenge of her persecutions to God, and to pray in-cessantly, for so no doubt (though in the persecution of Antichrist few wil so thinke) wil at length come. 9. We must also pray with humilitie, because we know not with the Pharisee if we be iust, but we know with the Publican that we be sinners. 15. He wil haue children to be brought to him, and al to be as children. 18. What is to be done to get life euerlasting. 22. What also to get perfection, 28. and what reward they shal haue that leaue al, yea or any part, for his sake, 31. He foretelleth of his Passion most particularly, 35. And entring into Iericho, cureth one blind man.

And he spake also a parable to them that it behovethoportet: it is needful, one ought always to pray, and not to be weary,AND he spake also a parable to them that it behoueth alwaies to pray, & not to be weary,Dicebat autem et parabolam ad illos, quoniam oportet semper orare et non deficere,

²saying: There was a certain judge in a certain city, which feared not God, and of man made no account.saying: There was a certaine iudge in a certaine citie, which feared not God, and of man made no account.dicens : Judex quidam erat in quadam civitate, qui Deum non timebat, et hominem non reverebatur.

³And there was a certain widow in that city, and she came to him, saying: Revengevindica: take personal vengeance me of mine adversary.And there was a certaine widow in that citie, and she came to him, saying: Reuenge me of mine aduersarie.Vidua autem quædam erat in civitate illa, et veniebat ad eum, dicens : Vindica me de adversario meo.

⁴And he would not of a long time. But afterward he said within himself: Although I fear not God, nor make account of man,And he would not of a long time. But afterward he said within himself: Although I feare not God, nor make account of man,Et nolebat per multum tempus. Post hæc autem dixit intra se : Etsi Deum non timeo, nec hominem revereor :

⁵yet because this widow is importunemolesta: troublesome, pressing wearisomely upon me, I will revenge her, lest at the last she come and defamesugillet: slander, libel me.yet because this widow is importune vpon me, I wil reuenge her, lest at the last she come and defame me.tamen quia molesta est mihi hæc vidua, vindicabo illam, ne in novissimo veniens sugillet me.

⁶And our Lord said: Hear what the judge of iniquity sayeth.And our Lord said: Heare what the iudge of iniquitie sayeth.Ait autem Dominus : Audite quid judex iniquitatis dicit :

⁷And will not God revenge his elect that cry to him day and night: and will he have patience in them?And wil not God reuenge his elect that crie to him day and night: and wil he haue patience in them?Deus autem non faciet vindictam electorum suorum clamantium ad se die ac nocte, et patientiam habebit in illis ?

⁸I say to you that he will quickly revenge them. But yet the Son of man coming, shall he find (trowputas: do you suppose, think you) faith in the earth?I say to you that he wil quickly reuenge them. But yet the Sonne of man comming, shal he find (trow you) faith in the earth?Dico vobis quia cito faciet vindictam illorum. Verumtamen Filius hominis veniens, putas, inveniet fidem in terra ?

⁹And he said also to certain that trusted in themselves as just, and despised others, this parable:And he said also to certaine that trusted in them selues as iust, and despised others, this parable:Dixit autem et ad quosdam qui in se confidebant tamquam justi, et aspernabantur ceteros, parabolam istam :

¹²I fast twice in a week: I give tithes of all that I possess.I fast twise in a weeke: I giue tithes of al that I possesse.jejuno bis in sabbato, decimas do omnium quæ possideo.

¹³And the Publican standing afar off would not so much as lift up his eyes toward Heaven; but he knocked his breast, saying: God be merciful to me a sinner.And the Publican standing a farre off would not so much as lift vp his eyes toward Heauen; but he knocked his brest, saying: God be merciful to me a sinner.Et publicanus a longe stans, nolebat nec oculos ad cælum levare : sed percutiebat pectus suum, dicens : Deus propitius esto mihi peccatori.

¹⁴I say to you, this man went down into his house justified more than he: because every one that exalteth himself, shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted.I say to you, this man went downe into his house iustified more then he: because euery one that exalteth himself, shal be humbled; and he that humbleth himself, shal be exalted.Dico vobis, descendit hic justificatus in domum suam ab illo : quia omnis qui se exaltat, humiliabitur, et qui se humiliat, exaltabitur.

¹⁷Amen I say to you: Whosoever receiveth not the Kingdom of God as a child, shall not enter into it.Amen I say to you: Whosoeuer receiueth not the Kingdom of God as a child, shal not enter into it.Amen dico vobis, quicumque non acceperit regnum Dei sicut puer, non intrabit in illud.

¹⁸And a certain Prince asked him, saying: Good Master, by doing what, shall I possess everlasting life?And a certaine Prince asked him, saying: Good Maister, by doing what, shal I possesse euerlasting life?Et interrogavit eum quidam princeps, dicens : Magister bone, quid faciens vitam æternam possidebo ?

¹⁹And JESUS said to him: Why dost thou call me good? None is good but only God.And IESVS said to him: Why doest thou cal me good? None is good but only God.Dixit autem ei Jesus : Quid me dicis bonum ? nemo bonus nisi solus Deus.

²⁰Thou knowest the commandments: Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and mother.Thou knowest the commandements: Thou shalt not kil, Thou shalt not commit aduoutrie, Thou shalt not steale, Thou shalt not beare false witnes, Honour thy father & mother.Mandata nosti : non occides ; non mœchaberis ; non furtum facies ; non falsum testimonium dices ; honora patrem tuum et matrem.

²¹Who said: All these things have I kept from my youth.Who said: Al these things haue I kept from my youth.Qui ait : Hæc omnia custodivi a juventute mea.

²²Which JESUS hearing, said to him: Yet one thing thou lackest: Sell all that ever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in Heaven: and come, follow me.Which IESVS hearing, said to him: Yet one thing thou lackest: Sel al that euer thou hast, & giue to the poore, and thou shalt haue treasure in Heauen: and come, follow me.Quo audito, Jesus ait ei : Adhuc unum tibi deest : omnia quæcumque habes vende, et da pauperibus, et habebis thesaurum in cælo : et veni, sequere me.

²⁴And JESUS seeing him stricken sad, said: How hardly shall they that have money enter into the Kingdom of God?And IESVS seeing him strooken sad, said: How hardly shal they that haue money enter into the Kingdom of God?Videns autem Jesus illum tristem factum, dixit : Quam difficile, qui pecunias habent, in regnum Dei intrabunt !

²⁵For it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God.For it is easier for a camel to passe through the eye of a needle, then for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God.facilius est enim camelum per foramen acus transire quam divitem intrare in regnum Dei.

²⁶And they that heard, said: And who can be saved?And they that heard, said: And who can be saued?Et dixerunt qui audiebant : Et quis potest salvus fieri ?

²⁸And Peter said: Lo, we have left all things, and have followed thee.And Peter said: Loe, we haue left al things, and haue followed thee.Ait autem Petrus : Ecce nos dimisimus omnia et secuti sumus te.

³⁰and shall not receive much more in this time, and in the world to come life everlasting.and shal not receiue much more in this time, and in the world to come life euerlasting.et non recipiat multo plura in hoc tempore, et in sæculo venturo vitam æternam.

³¹And JESUS took the Twelve, and said to them: Behold we go up to Jerusalem, and all things shall be consummateconsummabuntur: supremely accomplished which were written by the Prophets of the Son of man.And IESVS tooke the Twelue, and said to them: Behold we goe vp to Hierusalem, and al things shal be consummate which were written by the Prophets of the Sonne of man.Assumpsit autem Jesus duodecim, et ait illis : Ecce ascendimus Jerosolymam, et consummabuntur omnia quæ scripta sunt per prophetas de Filio hominis :

³²For he shall be delivered to the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and scourged, and spit upon:For he shal be deliuered to the Gentils, and shal be mocked, and scourged, and spit vpon:tradetur enim gentibus, et illudetur, et flagellabitur, et conspuetur :

³³and after they have scourged him, they will kill him, and the third day he shall rise again.and after they haue scourged him, they wil kil him, and the third day he shal rise againe.et postquam flagellaverint, occident eum, et tertia die resurget.

³⁴And they understood none of these things, and this word was hid from them, and they understood not the things that were said.And they vnderstood none of these things, and this word was hid from them, and they vnderstood not the things that were said.Et ipsi nihil horum intellexerunt, et erat verbum istud absconditum ab eis, et non intelligebant quæ dicebantur.

³⁵And it came to pass, when he drew nigh to Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the way, begging.And it came to passe, when he drew nigh to Iericho, a certaine blind man sate by the way, begging.Factum est autem, cum appropinquaret Jericho, cæcus quidam sedebat secus viam, mendicans.

³⁷And they told him that JESUS of Nazareth passed by.And they told him that IESVS of Nazareth passed by.Dixerunt autem ei quod Jesus Nazarenus transiret.

³⁸And he cried saying: JESUS son of David, have mercy upon me.And he cried saying: IESVS sonne of Dauid, haue mercie vpon me.Et clamavit, dicens : Jesu, fili David, miserere mei.

⁴¹saying: What wilt thou that I do to thee? but he said: Lord, that I may see.saying: What wilt thou that I doe to thee? but he said: Lord, that I may see.dicens : Quid tibi vis faciam ? At ille dixit : Domine, ut videam.

⁴²And JESUS said to him: Do thou see; thy faith hath made thee whole.And IESVS said to him: Doe thou see; thy faith hath made thee whole.Et Jesus dixit illi : Respice, fides tua te salvum fecit.

⁴³And forthwith he saw, and followed him, magnifying God. And all the people as they saw it, gave praise to God.And forthwith he saw, and folowed him, magnifying God. And al the people as they saw it, gaue praise to God.Et confestim vidit, et sequebatur illum magnificans Deum. Et omnis plebs ut vidit, dedit laudem Deo.
