He proueth his power to forgiue sinnes, by healing the sick of the palsey. 13. He calleth Matthew the Publican: 15. and defendeth his eating with sinners, 18. and his Disciples not fasting, 23. and plucking the eares of corne on the Sabboth.
And again he entered into Capharnaum after some days, and it was heard that he was in the house,AND againe he entred into Capharnaum after some daies, and it was heard that he was in the house,Et iterum intravit Capharnaum post dies,
2and many came together, in so much that there was no place; no not at the door, and he spake to them the Word.and many came togeather, in so much that there was no place; no not at the doore, & he spake to them the Word.et auditum est quod in domo esset, et convenerunt multi, ita ut non caperet neque ad januam, et loquebatur eis verbum.
3And they come to him bringing one sick of the palsy, who was carried of four. And they come to him bringing one sick of the palsey, who was caried of foure.
4And when they could not offer him unto him for the multitude, they uncovered the roof where he was: and opening it, they did let down the couch wherein the sick of the palsy lay.And when they could not offer him vnto him for the multitude, they vncouered the roofe where he was: and opening it, they did let downe the couch wherin the sick of the palsey lay.
5And when JESUS had seen their faith, he saith to the sick of the palsy: Son, thy sins are forgiven thee. And when IESVS had seene their faith, he faith to the sick of the palsey: Sonne, thy sinnes are forgiuen thee.
6And there were certain of the Scribes sitting there, and thinking in their hearts:And there were certaine of the Scribes sitting there, and thinking in their harts:Erant autem illic quidam de scribis sedentes, et cogitantes in cordibus suis :
7Why doth he speak so? he blasphemeth. Who can forgive sins, but only God?Why doth he speake so? he blasphemeth. Who can forgiue sinnes, but only God?Quid hic sic loquitur ? blasphemat. Quis potest dimittere peccata, nisi solus Deus ?
8Which by and by JESUS knowing in his Spirit, that they so thought within themselves, saith to them: Why think you these things in your hearts?Which by and by IESVS knowing in his Spirit, that they so thought within them selues, faith to them: Why thinke you these things in your harts?Quo statim cognito Jesus spiritu suo, quia sic cogitarent intra se, dicit illis : Quid ista cogitatis in cordibus vestris ?
9Whether is easier, to say to the sick of the palsy: Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say: Arise, take up thy couch, and walk?Whether is easier, to say to the sick of the palsey: Thy sinnes are forgiuen thee; or to say: Arise, take vp thy couch, and walke?Quid est facilius dicere paralytico : Dimittuntur tibi peccata : an dicere : Surge, tolle grabatum tuum, et ambula ?
10But that you may know that the Son of man hath power in earth to forgive sins (he saith to the sick of the palsy)But that you may know that the Sonne of man hath power in earth to forgiue sinnes (he faith to the sick of the palsey)Ut autem sciatis quia Filius hominis habet potestatem in terra dimittendi peccata (ait paralytico),
11I say to thee, Arise, take up thy couch, and go into thy house.I say to thee, Arise, take vp thy couch, and goe into thy house.tibi dico : Surge, tolle grabatum tuum, et vade in domum tuam.
12And forthwith he arose, and taking up his couch, went his way in the sight of all, so that all marveled, and glorified God, saying: That we never saw the like. And forthwith he arose, and taking vp his couch, went his way in the sight of al, so that al marueled, and glorified God, saying: That we neuer saw the like.
13And he went forth again to the sea, and all the multitude came to him, and he taught them. And he went forth againe to the sea, and al the multitude came to him, and he taught them.
14And when he passed by, he saw Levi of Alphaeus sitting at the custom telonium: the toll-booth, the tax office, and he saith to him: Follow me. And rising up he followed him.And when he passed by, he saw Leui of Alphaeus sitting at the custome place, and he faith to him: Folow me. And rising vp he folowed him.
15And it came to pass, as he sat at meat in his house, many Publicans and sinners did sit down together with JESUS and his Disciples. for they were many, who also followed him.And it came to passe, as he sate at meate in his house, many Publicans and sinners did sit downe togeather with IESVS and his Disciples. for they were many, who also folowed him.
16And the Scribes and Pharisees seeing that he did eat with Publicans and sinners, said to his Disciples: Why doth your Master eat and drink with Publicans and sinners? And the Scribes & Pharisees seeing that he did eate with Publicans and sinners, said to his Disciples: Why doth your Maister eate & drinke with Publicans and sinners?
17Jesus hearing this, saith to them: The whole have not need of a Physician, but they that are ill at male habent: ill, sick. for I came not to call the just, but sinners.IESVS hearing this, faith to them: The whole haue not need of a Physicion, but they that are il at ease. for I came not to cal the iust, but sinners.
18And the Disciples of John and the Pharisees did use to fast: and they come, and say to him: Why do the Disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy Disciples do not fast? And the Disciples of Iohn and the Pharisees did vse to fast: and they come, and say to him: Why doe the Disciples of Iohn and of the Pharisees fast, but thy Disciples doe not fast?
19And JESUS said to them: Why, can the children of the marriage fast, as long as the bridegroom is with them? So long time as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. And IESVS said to them: Why, can the children of the mariage fast, as long as the bridegrome is with them? So long time as they haue the bridegrome with them, they can not fast.
20But the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them: and then they shall fast in those days. But the daies wil come when the bridegrome shal be taken away from them: and then they shal fast in those daies.
21No man soweth a piece of rudis: new, undressed cloth to an old garment: otherwise he taketh away the new piecing from the old, and there is made a greater rent.No man soweth a peece of raw cloth to an old garment: otherwise he taketh away the new peecing from the old, and there is made a greater rent.Nemo assumentum panni rudis assuit vestimento veteri : alioquin aufert supplementum novum a veteri, et major scissura fit.
22And nobody putteth new wine into old utres: wineskins, not glass bottles: otherwise the wine bursteth the bottles, and the wine will be shed, and the bottles will be lost. But new wine must be put into new bottles. And no body putteth new wine into old bottels: otherwise the wine bursteth the bottels, and the wine wil be shed, and the bottels wil be lost. But new wine must be put into new bottels.
23And it came to pass again, when he walked through the corn on the Sabbaths, that his Disciples began to go forward, and to pluck the ears. And it came to passe againe, when he walked through the corne on the Sabboths, that his Disciples began to goe forward, and to pluck the eares.
24And the Pharisees said to him: Behold, why do they on the Sabbaths that which is not lawful? And the Pharisees said to him: Behold, why doe they on the Sabboths that which is not lawful?
25And he said to them: Did you never read what David did, when he was in necessity, and himself was an hungered and they that were with him?And he said to them: Did you neuer read what Dauid did, when he was in necessitie, and himself was an hungred and they that were with him?
26how he entered into the house of God under Abiathar the high Priest, and did eat the loaves of panes propositionis: the showbread, the loaves of presence, which it was not lawful to eat but for the Priests, and did give to them which were with him?how he entred into the house of God vnder Abiathar the high Priest, and did eate the loaues of Proposition, which it was not lawful to eate but for the Priests, and did giue to them which were with him?quomodo introivit in domum Dei sub Abiathar principe sacerdotum, et panes propositionis manducavit, quos non licebat manducare, nisi sacerdotibus, et dedit eis qui cum eo erant ?
27And he said to them: The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. And he said to them: The Sabboth was made for man, and not man for the Sabboth.
28Therefore the Son of man is Lord of the Sabbath also. Therefore the Sonne of man is Lord of the Sabboth also.Itaque Dominus est Filius hominis, etiam sabbati.
Annotations
4Uncovered. Such diligence ought to be used to bring sinners to Christ in his Sacraments, as was used to procure this man and others, by Christ, the health of their bodies.
5Sick of the palsy. Such as this man was in body by dissolution of his limbs, such also was he in soul, by the noisome desires of the world occupying his heart, and withdrawing him from all good works. St. Augustine de Pastor. c. 2.
5Thy sins. Hereby it appeareth that Christ healed this sick man first in his soul, before he took away his bodily infirmity: which may be an instruction for all men in bodily disease, first to call for the Sacraments, which be medicines of the soul.
10The Son of man. As Christ proveth unto them, that himself as man, and not as God only, hath power to remit sins, by that in all their sights he was able to do miracles, and that the sick man suddenly arose: so the Apostles having power granted them to do miracles, though they be not God, may in like manner have authority from God to remit sins, not as God, but as God's ministers.
10In earth. This power that the Son of man hath to remit sins in earth, never taken from him, but dureth still in his Sacraments and ministers, by whom he remitteth sins in the Church, and not in Heaven only. As is plain by the words of our Saviour to Peter first, and then to all the Apostles: Whatsoever you shall bind upon earth, shall be bound in Heaven: whatsoever you shall loose upon earth, shall be loosed in Heaven. Whereupon St. Jerome saith that Priests having the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven judge after a sort before the day of judgment.
25In necessity. In necessity many things be done without sin, which else might not be done: and so, in cases of necessity, chalices and consecrated vessels of the Church are by lawful authority turned to profane uses, which otherwise to alienate to a man's private commodity is sacrilege.
